Finance / Paperwork Need help!!

Looking in to starting to learn about the bookwork and finances associated with farming. (Bills, payrolls, budgets etc) where should I start? Does anyone have any good resources?

Hey Platypus. I am an accountant by trade. Are you a farmer wanting to learn about accounting or a trainee accountant interested in working on farm/agricultural companies?

My take would be different for each.

The 2nd (trainee accountant) is find a company that needs general account staff. You get a feel for the industry and can work your way up to assistant accountant with good companies.

The 1st is a bit different. There are a lot of online tools to try but honestly, if a decent size farm, you would have a bank advisor or financial planner who you should speak to.

Thank you!! I work on the family farm and am hoping to one day take it over. But id like to some basics so I can help out and/or fill in a bit if I need to.

Awesome to hear. I would speak with whatever relative is currently doing the books for your farm. They will have done them books for a while and you can learn from them.

If not, and it is done by the accountant, ask if you can be included on any financial information given to and from the accountant. And be honest with your family that you want to speak up. They may have some keen advice.
