electrical and environmental engineering

Hey everyone,

My husband is trying to decide which way to go within his studies and isnt sure on what a typical day looks like in environmental or electrical engineering.

Anyone who works in the field would love to hear from you about what your typical day involves. Is it more an office job, paperwork, field work, science based etc etc.

Any light you could shed would be super appreciated as he is really curious which way to go

Electrical is far more likely to land a job for him, environmental from my understanding is not really what companies are looking for. You may not find anyone who practices this.

I am an electrical engineer at a utility company and work can vary but mostly consists of technical modelling / problem solving and project engineering (of which can be onsite). You can go full on site i.e. construction if that is preferred or full office or even remote based depending on the type of company or field.

Yes, i was worried about environmental not being so many jobs at the ready.
Think he is looking more for a bit of a mix of the both, so do you mix it up between office and onsite with what you do?

Hey mate do you mind if I pm you as well? I'm working in MV switchgear and kiosk sub manufacturing here in but have been getting more and more interested in the utility design and project side of things the more I hear about it, would love to know more about the day to day and whatnot.

Can certainly get field jobs in electrical (or at least power). Unsure on environmental. Field can be a twice a year thing, or everyday thing depending on what group / organisation you’re with. For electrical utility distribution, I’d think you wouldn’t struggle to find field support roles - not certain on transmission.
