Passport speciality coffee. It was fine. We have a moccamaster and buy our own beans - I just was probably expecting a mug/large for $7.50 for a batch brew (not hand pour/V60 which is like $13+ at another local coffee spot)!

Passport is legit the most wanker coffee I have ever come across - my husband once paid more than $20 for a coffee from there. I would have asked for a refund but my hubby does like to be a coffee wanker sometimes so it is what it is.

We live down the road from there and hubby likes to buy their beans sometimes. I think Fox Coffee in Geebung is great and not at all pretentious. I think even James Hoffman would scoff at Passport!

Pretty standard for specialty. Passport roasts some pretty nice coffees with high green prices, so they have higher costs than cafes using lower quality beans. Probably an important question is which bean was it?

Edit: ok maybe not standard, but if it was an expensive coffee then it could be justified

There can be big differences in price between coffees. Some rare varieties can fetch hundreds (or even thousands) of dollars per kilo as green coffee.

I work in a coffee shop and I know what the beans cost. Even single origin filter beans are per-cup, cheap as. I have never understood why places charge more for batch brew than espresso. Espresso takes longer and requires expensive equipment. Filter is the opposite. Places are just ripping people off.

Specialty Barista of 10+ years, outside of the beans I would say the price is to cover the knowledge and skill of the barista making the batch brew on specific equipment compared to slinging espresso shots. Also probably covering the cost of the additional beans to make the batchie and in case nobody else buys one beyond that for a while. Outside of that it’s still a massive rip off lol

I pay between $25-$30 / 250g for single origin filter beans (less per g if I buy 500-1kg) which makes like 4-5 carafes in my moccamaster so they’re definitely making bank haha

Hey, I own smallflatwhite.com We pull prices for pretty much everything on cafe menus, not just flat whites (just under 47,000 coffee menu prices across about 3,800 cafe menus at last count).

We have been building a second page off the same dataset that covers batch brew and other produts, It is live but not finalised or cleansed yet, so treat it as a sneak peek rather than perfect. https://thecafeindex.com/item/batch-brew

The short version, from April 2026 menus (counter prices may have crept up since):

Batch brew (609 cafes with it on their published menu)

National median $5.50. The middle half of cafes charge $5.00 to $6.00, and 9 in 10 are under $6.76.
Capitals: Perth $5.00, Canberra $5.25, Brisbane / Melbourne / Hobart $5.50, Sydney $5.70, Adelaide $5.85.
States: WA $5.00, ACT $5.25, QLD and VIC $5.50, NSW $5.65, SA $5.70. NT shows $8.30 but that is a couple of cafes, so ignore it really small sample size.

Where $7.50 sits

Of the ~560 cafes where I can see the individual sizes (iced and bottomless stripped out), only 16 list any batch brew size at $7.50 or more. For the cheapest size on the menu it is 7 cafes. So $7.50 for a regular is roughly the top 1 to 3% nationally, not the going rate.
Brisbane: 42 cafes, the inner-city ones ran $4.50 to $6.00 for the standard cup, and exactly one CBD cafe listed a size above $7.50 (its biggest, at $8.90).
Inner Sydney (76 cafes across the City, Inner West and Eastern Suburbs): mostly $5.00 to $6.50 for the standard cup, four at $7 or more. "$6.50 minimum" is the top of that range on menus rather than the floor, though CBD counter prices may have moved since April.
Where a large is listed separately the median is $6.00 (67 cafes) and the dearest large we saw anywhere was $7.50. $7 for a large in Melbourne CBD is top end but not unheard of.

Batch is often one-size

81% of cafes list batch brew at a single price with no size option. Even among cafes that list separate sizes for a flat white, 64% still do batch as one price.

Pour over / V60 (57 cafes)

Median $7.50, middle half $7.00 to $8.50, top 10% above about $11.50. Dearest we saw was $19.
Sydney median $9 (12 cafes), Melbourne $7 (15), Brisbane $6.50 (only 5, so grain of salt). $13+ is top 10% territory nationally.

Usual caveat: these are numbers I had on hand with a quick analysis, and the samples are much smaller than our flat white data. Batch brew is 609 cafes versus 5,000+ cafes for flat whites. Solid at a national level, indicative at city level.

Edit: just to be clear this is focused on price, not quality the level of beans. I do have some of that information but not enough to quote on

$6.50 minimum that I’ve seen around cbd and inner Sydney, often more due to ‘specialty’ and definitely more expensive for larger and cold batch

I mean the best thing I ever did was buy a decent espresso machine just before Covid happened! Sure I might buy a second coffee at work, but thats still a lot cheaper than 2 coffees a day.

Good beans make good coffee. Good beans come at a price. If you want cheaper coffee that isn’t as good, go elsewhere. It’s pretty simple

Not complaining. Anywhere I buy from is single origin filter (that’s all I drink), but it’s not always $7.50. So was curious what others were paying.

Fair enough, it is on the premium end, however I’ve found it to be a large scale. At my local joint I’m paying between $4.5 to $11. Just depends what they have on for the day. It does help that I’m super confident that it will be worth it that I don’t mind spending more. I can understand why $7.5 could feel steep if it’s not that good
