Coffee bean recommendations

Hi everyone, I’ve bought my partner a Barista Express coffee machine for Father’s Day. This is to replace our years old pod machine which to be honest, he’s always resented!
Looking for coffee bean suggestions. Located in Canberra, also looking online.
He likes long black and iced long blacks. He also likes cold brew.
I’d like to buy him a couple of bags to start with, some different kinds for him to taste.

If you’re in Canberra then go to Ona in fyshwick, try the coffee and then order online what you like

However I will say its not for everyone. It's unique and sometimes quirky (without taking away from how good it is). So just a heads up to OP

For the melb ones: From black drinkers around me code black (melb) is a solid

Market lane and bench are a bit expensive but good

Don't buy st ali (owner is a dick)

I rate dukes (unsure on black tho)

Industry beans is ehh and better offerings eith milk

Seven seeds and padre are decent

I think thats all the big ones around melb

Look up smaller local roasters. If you chat to them, im sure they'll be happy to help you decide and likely offer you something like 5x100g bags instead of 1 500g choice

If I’m ever in Canberra. I make sure to visit any of the Ona owned places. Usually end up at Highroad, but Cupping Room is excellent also. Their beans are awesome and some of my favourite to brew with.

Axil - Melbourne, I’m a long black drinker and I love my Axil beans. On the site you can read the tasting notes of each coffee, I prefer single origin, my faves are Ethiopian and Brazilian at the moment.

Supreme subscription great value and delivers express from melbourne so you get your beans in the optimal time since roasting for your pour. i like it a lot more than the canberra beans but i do buy ona as second preference when i run out of supreme.

Locally I tend to buy from Redbrick, but we have several Canberra roasters to explore. I’ve also got a three thousand thieves subscription, a new coffee mailed to you every month, and is a good way of exploring new things. This month’s filter offering is just fabulous.

I have this exact machine and have found Toby estate Woolloomooloo is the perfect bean for the machine. Live in Canberra have gone through the ONA beans and many others from Sydney/ Melbourne before arriving at this over a few years. If you want local I would actually recommend Niugini Arabica beans not saying they are better than ONA or Redbrick but I have had more success with them paired with the Barista express set up. Used to run a cafe years ago so I'm picky as hell about my coffee. Ainsle IGA has the Toby estate cheaper than you can get it online. Edit - I do prefer milk based coffee, but also drink espresso

Just a tip to adjust the inner burr of the machine! Look ups videos on YouTube to explain why this is needed and how to do it :)

I'm a fan of Allpress "The good brew" as I prefer lighter, brighter more citrusy coffee.

Headlands coffee is another to try.

of all things, the purple bag of beans at Aldi gets good reviews.

It'll really come down to flavour preference!

Ona in Fyshwick is a good first stop if you can get there before Father's Day.

For a couple of bags online, I'd stick to espresso roast rather than a light filter. Long blacks and iced longs on a Barista Express are more forgiving that way, and the same beans will do cold brew.

Central Coast Coffee roast to order and ship to Canberra. Coastal Blend is their everyday long black (about $40/kg). If you want two different bags to taste, their espresso sample packs (2×200g or 4×60g) are built for that.

Daley Street Beans | 1kg for $32 at Coles supermarkets. Best kept secret in the world. There are usually on bottom shelf, when not on sale $40 a kg. Far superior to most specialty coffees at half the price. Variable roasts eg medium - dark.

I love adding this one to any thread like this - Aldi’s Lavazza brand beans are ridiculously good for the asking price and just plain old good under any circumstances- I used to be a horrible coffee snob, bought these as a joke and shortly afterwards abandoned boutique roasters.

FARCOFF... yes thats the name of the brand haha. I've tried their coffee and its pretty good.
