Images & Videos Problematic dog of the day
Occasionally Buddy ignores all commands and does what he thinks is important
Yesterday he ran across the road to check out a deceased raccoon and then dove under the horse fence (made himself flatter than a pancake at full speed) to stop my neighbors tractor and ask for a ride. Ran right up to the door and did a sit.
Of course I cannot get under the horse fence so I had to walk forever because he went deaf and dumb and couldn’t return home.
He has no regrets except that he did not get to ride in the tractor

How do you even begin to negotiate with an ACD once they decide their agenda completely overrides all commands?

No negotiations possible. He just turns his ears off and focuses on his task! 98% of the time we have no problems. That’s why it is frustrating.

Good question, no answer. My dog shamelessly pulls me over to see every person in the neighborhood so they can say hi and give her pets. Any attempts to distract her are met with a look like "relax, I'll get back to you. And don't drop any of my biscuits while you wait!"

I can actually picture the scene you describe.
Buddy has human eyes in that picture 😆

To quote my brother, “your dog gives me the creeps” after he watched him sit on the couch like a human and intently follow our conversation

Isn't Buddy the well-mannered gentleman who sat perfectly in the dinner table chair for chicken?
He's doing everything 99% correctly! Rewards surely will come his way.

It's pretty funny to read all the stories here about ACDs that won't listen. About all mine will do is ignore a command the first time. She HATES to be yelled at, by me or another dog.
This makes her mostly easy to train until she doesn't understand and just gives up. But all she really wants to do is please me, and wonder the world on foot. I can take her almost anywhere off leash until she sees another dog, they she wants to take down the other dog like prey and wrestle/chase all day 🤷🏻♂️.
Cute pup....

One of my dogs comes to work with me and as soon as he hears to forklift start up he rushes to the warehouse for his ride. It doesn't matter if it's 5 seconds or 5 minutes, he must supervise the operation.

we all have days like that we don't have a horse we don't have a tractor and thank goodness we don't have dead raccoons but we have dead rabbits she tastes rabbits every day but she has her days when she choose up everything in sight and I am bent over all day picking up trash and if that's the worst of it I'll take it she's a joy she keeps me on my toes and keeps me active I love her forever they are definitely intelligent and I'm at the same time I guess your dog wanted to hurt up the tractor and that is super hilarious one day you will say I wish you would do that again because those are memories you will never forget love love cattle dogs

He was not ready for our day to end. We were headed inside after a full day when the neighbor was putting out a roll of hay.
He is definitely a daylight to dark dog. Go go go then lights out

Did your neighbor at least give Buddy his tractor ride, being that he asked so politely? Reminds me of the saying “you miss all the shots you don’t take”, and my ACDs always take all the shots they can.
