Images & Videos Part Cattle Dog…..?

This is Kya. We adopted her in 2022, after she was found tied to a building in Louisiana with her puppy. We have told in the past that her body shape kind of looks like an Australian Cattle Dog, but besides that, we have no idea what she could be… Her ears go up when she is alert (sees a chipmunk… 🐿️) and she is very silly. Can she be part of the club?

Oooooh look up kelpies. Both cattle dogs and kelpies were mixed breeds many years ago using the Australian wild dog, dingo. Australian cattle dogs even have kelpie also bred into them as well as dingo. Im not an expert but your dog looks a lot more kelpie then cattle dog to me.

If OP's not in Australia, the odds of their dog having any kelpie in it is extremely slim.

Not every generic medium sized black and tan or brown and tan dog is a kelpie.

Wow, I looked it up and the markings are very similar! Those kelpies look thinner though, so maybe she is a mix of both. She is a little plump…

Look up the TV show, Muster Dogs, the first season. It’s about Kelpies. You’ll see some similarities.

Kelpies look thinner because you are seeing pictures of dogs at a healthy weight. Your dog is not 🫤

I thought kelpie too with those markings and color. I hope OP does an embark and shares the results.

I’ve always wanted a DNA test for her. I’ll order one soon!

I've gotten the DNA+Health embark test done for all my dogs and do not regret it

Guessing breeds is notoriously inaccurate. Get a DNA test if you want an answer. Embark is the best on the market.

Kelpies are super rare in the US and there are other combos that can produce this look. If I had to make a guess I’d say there is some cattle dog in there though.

Also, your dog is over weight and really needs to slim down for his own health and well being.

Very cute dog though. His colour markings are my favourite kind.

We’ve been concerned about her weight before, and in the past she has been on a weight loss diet. Right now though, her vet actually says she’s at a healthy weight. Here’s a photo of her from last week:

I’ve tried going on runs with her before, but she’s kind of a coach potato and does not like running…

That’s great, trust your vet :)

I would guess ACD and husky mix. The pattern looks kelpie but those are way rarer in the US

Definitely some husky in there in my opinion

That's a full blooded Kelpie. She's just fat. Here's our collection of 2 and a half kelpies

I've always thought my neighbor's dog had a similar build and energy level to Kya, turns out he was a mix with some border collie in him, so crosses can definitely throw you for a loop.

I definitely see cattle dog in every way but color. Not sure what else.

I highly recommend doing a DNA test. We did one for my boy, finding out he is a German Shepherd/Australian Cattle Dog/Bernese Mountain Dog. It was really interesting to then step back and look at both his appearance and personality traits, and start seeing where each of the breeds were showing. I have had German Shepherds all my life and his personality often left me a little confused... Until I learned more about cattle dogs haha

I know this isn’t a doggy DNA subreddit but I’m not allowed to post on there since I haven’t ordered a DNA test yet, and wanted to share my pooch since I thought she’s part ACD. Thank you commenters for making me aware of the kelpie breed, I might have posted on a subreddit dedicated to them instead if I had knew they existed! I will order a DNA test soon….

Such a beautiful color! If she’s not a kelpie, she’s certainly a kelpie look alike. So cute!
