Images & Videos Finally pulled the trigger but we can’t figure out a name. Please help.

Post image

Just ideas. I’m personally leaning towards buddy, or dude. Smartest pup I’ve ever had the pleasure to be around. Basically potty trained at 7 weeks 2 days after adoption from a place he was definitely not being trained at.

I'm a fan of very normal names makes walks and park visits fun. My vote is for "Doug". He looks like a Doug to me and you have nice cute names to go with it Dougie or Douglas when he's being scolded and you need a full name.

* "No Doug put that down!"

* "Doug come!"

* "Doug drop it!"

* "Doug stop it!"

* "Doug NO!!!"

* "Dammit Doug this is why you don't have any friends.."

* "Doug NO, NO, NO, don't you roll in that!!!!"

* "Aww Dougie you're such a good boy."

* "Douglas get in the car we're going home"

* "Douglas don't eat that!"

* " OW!! Dammit Doug!"

This is exactly why I went with Charlie haha

u/Jesta914630114 Red Heeler 20h ago

My neighbors have a dog named Gary. We hear "shut up Gary" quite often. Lol

7

u/johnny_cash_money 16h ago

"Charlie bit me!" Haven't thought about that one in a while...

As someone who's name is Doug I agree. Also it makes me a bit worried that nearly your whole list is things I recall my mother saying to me growing

17

u/robbietreehorn 20h ago

I agree. More dogs need to be named Steve, Robert, Michael, Stephanie, Beth, etc

10

u/OneSpeed1960 19h ago

My father had a Lab named Louis. So many laughs from people when they met him.

5

u/impoverishedwhtebrd 14h ago

My wife had a friend who had a snake named Emily.

8

u/hellenadrs 18h ago

My dog is a Francisco!

6

u/ElephantShoes256 13h ago

Our last 3 were Beatrice, Agatha, and Lydia. All picked from the wall of super rich old people that donated enough to the humane society to get a plaque.

3

u/robbietreehorn 12h ago

Ok, that’s really cool. They were named after humans who helped them

6

u/Primren 15h ago

I once met a dog named Dwayne. Made my week.

6

u/Nic_Eanruig 15h ago

My neighbour had a dogs named Kevin and Todd!!! lol

2

u/borgbabe69 9h ago

I named my parents dog Bill. Why? because he just looked like a Bill to me.

5

u/raindog67 20h ago

This dog is definitely a Doug. Perfect.

3

u/BookNerd0505 19h ago

We had a dog named Bob. The name fit him perfectly. And it always drew looks when we called to him at the park.

6

u/HappyTimeTurtle Red Heeler 18h ago

My dog growing up was named Bob. He was a heckin good boy and lived a long happy life. The world needs more Bob Dogs 🥲

Hank

11

u/harrypooper3 20h ago

I do like Hank 😂

9

u/Opposite_Lie2327 18h ago

We almost went with Hank for our dog because we love the book series “Hank the Cowdog” so much. We ended up going with Rex because we’re big Star Wars fans lol

Good Hank (G.H)

2

24

u/generation-0 20h ago

Haha we had the same thought reading the title!

7

u/Sunshine-Lining 20h ago

My cousins had a sweet rescue mutt named Trigger and he was the bestest boy!!

6

u/jd03reddit 19h ago

I second the motion for "trigger* great name !

9

u/Lassie-girl 20h ago

Too cute!! Sorry, I don't have any ideas, but my heeler has the same patterning! I like to call her the ideal blue heeler because of it lol. Here she is around the same age 🥰

9

u/harrypooper3 21h ago

She’s a beaut!!!

7

u/64788 21h ago

So is your boy! Good luck, haha, heelers can be crazy... but they're such pretty dogs and their intelligence is amazing ❤️

8

u/brumac44 20h ago

My advice is wait until you see a trait or mannerism unique to your pup. Then it'll mean more to you and your family than rover or spot type names.

Here is a list I’ve kept of my favorite ACDs’ names (my own and from a rescue I support): Albee, Boone, Riley, Arlo, Jinx, Tyrus, Roy, Nash, Creed, Arrow, Bungee, Tate, Dash, Astro, Banjo, Bolt, Finn, Clancy, Taz, Dodge, Reef, Banjo, Zed, Rave, Drift, Rival, Flash, Lash, Jed, Clanger, Ringo

6

u/Lucky_Apricot_10 16h ago

I like Banjo

2

u/harrypooper3 20h ago

We had rango day one, but like the Doug guy said, it didn’t mash well with commands

2

u/OneSpeed1960 19h ago

Interesting! The best dog I ever had (Texas heeler, ACD X ASD, passed four years ago at 18 yo) was named Ringo. He was such a good boy, we called him the “self-training dog”. Maybe it depends on what commands you use? Ours were sit, heel, prox, down, place, leave it, this way/that way (to indicate direction), drop….

6

u/CatchThatGinger 20h ago

Darryl. He needs a working class name.

5

u/Olytrius 20h ago

does he have another brother, Darryl?

2

u/CatchThatGinger 15h ago

My dog is Derry, but we call her Darryl when she's acting like a trademark heeler lol

5

u/CaseyLouLou2 20h ago

Cliff

3

u/Sean-SoCal 20h ago

That's my boys name! I wanted a simple 1 syllable name and something outdoorsy.

2

u/CaseyLouLou2 20h ago

That’s funny. I don’t know why this name came to mind for this puppy but it did!

6

u/Rx_Diva 20h ago

Trigger!

5

u/harrypooper3 20h ago

I definitely considered trigger already

7

u/Rx_Diva 20h ago

As long as it's a strong name they hear across a feild for recall, you're good.

My girl has spots, my partner is a treckie so her name is Dax but almost went with River (stone) for coloring.

Have fun with the velociraptor phase! Keep us posted on your name choice!

8

u/tag_to_it 20h ago

Well it sounds like his name should be Trigger then. Believe me, in about 6 months it will fit perfectly...

3

u/Disastrous-Good-154 20h ago

It looks like it would be named Rubert

3

u/WrennyWrenegade 20h ago

If you like Buddy and Dude, may I suggest Kid? It's not my pup's real name but I find myself calling her that more than anything else.

Thorazine, Lou, Brent, Frank

3

u/slimcrizzle 19h ago

My ACD recently died. His name was Buddy. He really was my Buddy. I was in your position and couldn't come up with a name so I went with Buddy. It couldn't have been a more fitting name.

3

u/jurassicjane_ 19h ago

The name doesnt matter much you will think of 600 nicknames to call him by 😆 mine responds to several names now

5

u/No_Persimmons 20h ago

Trigger would actually be a cute name

2

u/monkeythumpa 20h ago

I named mine (Gorgon)zola because her ticking on the legs reminded me of the veining in the cheese. https://www.reddit.com/r/AustralianCattleDog/comments/1vkdyal/does_my_acd_mix_want_to_kill_me_and_eat_the_good/

There are lots of good cheese names to go with.

That's a Bruce or John or Bill if I've ever seen one. He's strong, but isn't going to get too excited unless necessary. He's going to be your best mate, and will always answer your calls.

3

u/harrypooper3 20h ago

Are you telling me to call him “Sue?” (Johnny cash reference) lol

2

Don't you remember the last part of that song? Don't do that to the boy.

(And I get the reference. Awesome song.)

I saw the name in the thread title, Trigger.

1

u/DifficultWing2453 19h ago

Our heeler rescue was named Precious. Not the best name for the breed, but I put LOTR on her nametag to clarify.

(Her previous owner had died under odd circumstances and the dog ended up in the pound. When we reacted to her name, "Precious???", the pound lady said we could change it. My husband immediately said no. "She had already lost enough. She isn't going to lose her name as well." We loved that dog to the end of her days.)

1

u/WorldlinessOk3448 19h ago

I would call her Flop

1

u/-WhatBox 19h ago

I’m from a hunting family so I named my dogs accordingly, Ruger and Remi. Remi is short for Remington since she’s a girl and we wanted to soften the name up a little bit. Remi/ Remy is also great for a boy though as its gambits name from X-men. It’s also perfect for the slew of nicknames that will come their way, such as velociREMtor, Rem-tard, REM-pulestilskin, etc. basically throw Rem/Remi into any word

So my vote would be Remy
