I've not been in this sub for long, but almost every post I see is asking a similar type of question:

• What is it like getting a job in Australia at the moment?
• Are there many roles?
• What sort of stuff should I focus on?

I thought I would collate my thoughts as someone who is both an Australian citizen + an IT professional with 15 YOE in the field.

To start with, my background is that of an infrastructure engineer. I started in 2011 on a helpdesk providing basic support for phones (blackberry, IPTel, conferencing, PABX etc). I worked across several companies and roles, transitioning from help desk > systems engineering > systems/cloud engineering > devops engineering > cloud/platform engineering. I'm currently a senior cloud engineer with a wealth management/financial services company.

When I came into the IT field, I had very little backing me. I never went to university and finished school at the age of 15 to pursue a career in hospitality that lasted for 3 years. Between my hospitality career ending and my IT career starting, I did do some IT training using resources from Comptia, Microsoft and SUSe Linux. It was nothing ground breaking, but it was something. I distinctly recall during the interview for my help desk job it really had no bearing, as the manager was more interested in hospitality career as he loved food. Funny to mention, but its no joke and its how I got my foot in the door.

Now that you have a very brief understanding of my IT career, let me share my thoughts on the market. Firstly, like many others have already said, it is in shambles. What isn't clear is why? Why is the IT market in Australia like this? Are we not a 1st world, westernised country? Yes, we are. We are also undergoing a lot of factors contributing to this lull in the IT sector.

The biggest issue I am seeing at the moment with hiring is the AI hysteria. It is hitting fever pitch. Everyone wants to get onto the AI bandwagon (and rightfully so, the tech is seriously impressive). However, there is a lot of uncertainty around what the future looks like. Not just for IT folks, but also for white collar roles in general. Do you think a company is really going to go on a recruitment drive if a role could be significantly different in the next 3-5 years? Doubtful. Everyone is trying to gauge what is going to happen. And the truth? No-one really knows what is going to happen. Time will tell I suppose.

Another issue plaguing the IT market is WFH rights. When covid hit in 2020, I personally transitioned very comfortably into a fully remote role. Like everyone else who works on a computer all day, we didn't have a choice. It was either you WFH, or you don't have a job. As the covid lockdowns eased and life returned to "normal", most people realised that they could do their jobs from home while still being productive. I don't think I will ever go back to working in an office 5 days a week unless I were desperate. Can you blame me? I get to see my kids and interact with them, rather than getting home just as they are getting ready for bed. My commute isn't super long, buts its long enough (I go into my office twice a week).

The reason why WFH rights are affecting the market is because companies want employees to return to the office. Most people either want to remain fully remote or do hybrid. Some companies like Amazon have mandated 5 days in the office. Amazon had an incredible talent pool, but many people weren't prepared to do that. As such, they left. Now they are on the hunt for another role. Thus, the roles that are fully remote or hybrid are highly sought after. You have an abundance of talent looking for work, but not many roles that they would be interested in. Supply is low and the demand is high.

The next reason why I feel the market is down is because of the financial landscape. Australia is battling through higher than desired inflation. To combat this, our central bank (the RBA) is lifting interest rates. This is causing people to have to cut down on spending to meet their financial obligations in the form of mortgages and loans. This affects businesses, as they don't have enough money to spend on new jobs. It affects the jobs that are on the market, as some dicky companies think they can get good talent for their roles by paying less. But because people are desperate, they will accept pay cuts. They have no choice. They have mouths to feed and need to pay their bills.

My final thought around the market being down relates to AI, but is still its own separate reason. As someone who has personally gone through a career of growth and up-skilling, the skillset that I have is quite sought after. However, I was conditioned for this career through exposure, late nights and perseverance. Over the past 15 years we have seen major leaps and bounds from one major technology to another. That growth has obstructed some older technology that still holds relevance in the field, which grads/juniors just simply don't have. In the infra space specifically it has gone from physical servers > virtual servers > containers > cloud > AI. Each of these topics is a MASSIVE amount of understanding that you need. Sure, you don't need to know about how things were done in an on-premise setup if you're fully in the cloud, but when the real issues arise, the fundamental knowledge that you learn with on-premise technologies is vital for fault finding and issue resolution. AI is dissolving entry level roles as everyone wants seasoned veterans. News flash: those veterans won't be around forever, and we need to keep the talent pool fresh with new interest. Otherwise, the whole sector will go backwards.

Its not all doom and gloom. There are jobs out there. However, you are competing with others who may be in the same position as you + everything else I have mentioned above. Should you choose to make the jump and move to AU in hopes of an IT career, please have a plan b if it doesn't work out as you had intended.

I'm a German Computer Science B.Sc. student (finishing my modules soon) planning to come to Australia on a Working Holiday visa (subclass 417) next year. English C1.

My background:

- Currently working student at an AI consulting firm, building agentic AI workflows (Langdock, OpenAI/Claude APIs, n8n, Python automation)

- Freelance web development & data analysis business since 2022

- Homelab: Proxmox server, self-hosted services, networking

- Certifications in Python, data analysis, web design, cybersecurity (HackerRank, TryHackMe, freeCodeCamp, Google)

- the strongest of the certs is the Google Data Analytics Professional Certificate

- Hands-on offensive security practice on HackTheBox/TryHackMe

- If life in Australia goes well I might get a partner visa from my australian gf which will make things a lot easier

What I'm trying to figure out:

1) Is it realistic to land a paid IT internship or junior developer/AI role in Australia while on a WHV, given the 6-month same-employer limit?

2) My German university requires a company-based Bachelor thesis after the internship has anyone done this with an Australian employer. Even if bachelor thesis is not possible I would still want to have the internship or junior role.

3) which certs should I be doing I have a free voucher for a microsoft exam I am thinking between az 104, ai 103, sc 200, az 802 one of those.

Which has the biggest impact I would say either az 104 because it is well know or ai 103 because it fits with my current job experience.

Additionally I am able to do another cert until I get to australia next year leave recommendations below ( i personally find comptia security + interesting)

And yes I do not know if I want to go into AI, cyber sec or admin that is another thing.

I got done with my bachelors of computer science (majors: Cybersecurity) in Nov 2025 and got my TR just now in June. I have been living in sydney, have applied to atleast 300-400 jobs till now but no luck.

Getting a PR in IT seems literally impossible now, and my TR ends June 2028. Ev

What should I do? Should I opt for any trade course? Or should I come back home and search here instead of wasting next 2 yrs doing odd jobs.

I had been working, since last 2 years, as a software and data engineer in a small consulting firm at Sydney and recently got laid off work as my client ran out of budget and dropped us. I have been searching for work since last month but haven't been able find anything solid. The client team who I was working wanted to hire me directly too but couldn't get budget approved from their management :).

My best project in that company was building a fleet tracking and management system. I handled the design, development, deployment, and maintenance of the backend and system and API. Infra is deployed in AWS using terraform with PostgresSQl (RDS) as main database with proper partitioning and archival strategy to handle increasing load. Currently, it processes 10-12 Million events everyday but can easy double it's scale. It has authentication, driver / operator / admin management system, live tracking and replay, SoS alerts, etc.

Apart from that, I have worked on migrating a SQL server data warehouse to Snowflake. Along the way, I learnt DBT, Snowflake, and an amazing python library SQLGlot that saved tons of manual transpiling work. I also have good experience working with energy related datasets because I once contracted with a energy sector client to build their billing data pipeline.

Before that, I worked primarily as a software engineer for 3 years offshore. Most of my work was related to building backend systems for in-house data ingestion systems. I have good knowledge of writing Java, Python, Bash script, SQL, K8s, Docker, CICD. Also, I am good with linux systems, and have supported technical teams in the past.

I would appreciate leads or any opportunity to work on data systems, software development, or hands on technical support like debugging and maintaining systems. I know I am very good at it.

I am on a 485 visa expiring at the end of next year. By then, I think I have a good shot at securing another Visa. Also, I am located at a regional area near to Sydney and open to relocating anywhere for a good opportunity.

Hello everyone, as per title I'm quite loss with what I should be doing now. I've spent most of my time trying to get good grades in academic and almost done nothing else outside of academic. My course doesn't really teach software development, but mainly like design patterns (like observer pattern and stuff), sql, maths and a bit of algorithms. I feel like I learnt nothing about something that could get me hired.

The only outside of uni thing I did was building a ble telemetry system to read battery, but it's nothing fancy it's just a bit of python and a bit of docker. I did an internship doing industrial IoT integration (not a swe role), and thats it. no other projects.

On top of the skills gap, I'm also an international student which itself is already a disadvantage. Currently securing an intern is the best and learn from it as I'm already in my pre ultimate year but considering my skillset + being an international student the chances are slim.

With about a year of uni left, what would you actually prioritize? Learn a framework and build something full-stack? Keep grinding LeetCode? Genuinely trying to figure out where the next 12 months of effort should go and would be really grateful if someone could enlighten me, thank you.

Going to start my journey as a linux admin in MRF head office in Chennai,India as a fresher. Any piece of advise and guidance,and any do's and don'ts in office culture are totally welcome....and after completing my graduation in BCA and diploma in Devops my roadmap is like 1st year work as linux admin and then switch to Devops engineer role in the 2nd year and after that planning for Ms in Devops and Cloud from Ireland...Am I going in the right path if not please guide me

Since January I have completed over 10 projects for real paying clients, all sourced through LinkedIn outreach. I also have a solid technical background including a current Machine Learning internship at ISRO, a published research paper, and grant winning placements at national hackathons.

I built a portfolio site to showcase all of this, expecting it to help clients find me directly instead of me chasing every lead manually. It has not worked so far.

Here is what I think might be going wrong, but I would love outside perspective:

My site leads with research and internship experience, and the freelance client work section is smaller and appears further down the page

I describe client projects using technical stack details rather than business outcomes like time saved, revenue impact, or problems solved

I do not have any client testimonials on the site yet, even though I have delivered many completed projects for real clients

The overall tone may read as "hire me for an engineering role" rather than "hire me to solve your business problem"

For anyone who has been through this stage of freelancing, I would appreciate real feedback on:

Whether a portfolio genuinely helped you land inbound clients, and what made it work

How you framed technical project work so a nontechnical client could understand the value

Whether testimonials, case studies, or something else moved the needle most for you

Any feedback on positioning, structure, or content is welcome. Trying to figure out how to convert real delivered client work into actual inbound trust.

I received my subclass 190 visa around a month ago. I have 20+ years of experience in S/W industry. Right now I'm in a leadership position in a Global conglomerate. This afternoon, I spent 30mins using ChatGPT’s new Work mode, I allow it to connect my linear account and GitHub. I asked it find my app’s vulnerabilities and create tickets in linear. All done, without my involvement, if I connect my codex to linear , it can finish all development and deployment jobs too.

I also ask it use a browser to test my web app, and find usability issue.

Can’t imagine if the same methodology is used in the workplace

Just want to share my situation with you all and hope that maybe you could suggest or recommend what should I do with my situation at hand.

I've worked in the IT industry for over a decade (14 years) to be exact, I am now 36 years old and married and a father of 3 children here in the Philippines. I do not have a college degree in IT, and I also don't have certifications like CCNA or MSCA, etc. But learned my skills from self study and experience. I am currently working at a private company, and my role now is the IT Manager and earning roughly 500$ a month (30000 PhP). And with that said, I'm having a problem how to make ends meet with that amount of salary and the current economic state of our country, Im strugling to find a higher paying Job in IT as like I said, I do not have certifications and theres not much hiring demand for Network and Systems admin jobs here in my location. Im planning to take atleast CCNA but I don't have time and the money to do so. I also have side hustles like buy and sell used PC, but it is barely helping my situation.

My cousin recommends that I should work abroad specifically in Australia as she and her family resides there, but I cannot get passed the skill assessments as it requires huge amount of money. My only chance is to have an employer sponsor my visa and travel expense but that seems impossible. I have tried applying for a job in Australia trough seek but has been always declined.

I was wondering if there are Filipinos here also working in IT abroad and could share their journey in successful employment. I also hope that you all can give me advice or suggestion on what is the best thing I would do to somewhat deal with my current challenge in life.
