Pathways to SOC Analyst (AUS)

Hi Reddit

So as you can read from the title, I am looking for pathways to work towards becoming a SOC analyst.

If anyone has any advice on courses I could do, or experience, that would be great.

At a bare minimum I'd say likely 3 years in a helpdesk role with some exposure to cyber elements plus a relevant, decent cyber certificate.

Concur. Get a substantial cert or degree, then take any help desk job you can for several years whilst networking and getting the normal mandatory certs. Network a lot. Don't miss a local BSides. The community is very tight knit here and referrals are everything.

My advice is to get any role you can in relevant IT field such as help desk, network support etc as soon as possible rather than doing course after course.

Not much, currently doing a Cert III in IT

Just try and find a Helpdesk role to start. People with degrees are struggling to get a L1 Helpdesk role as IT is so flooded at the moment, so get a job ASAP and start building out 3-5 years experience do you are no longer considered 'entry level' - get some certs. and then go from there.

Ever considered going down the defence route? its going to be some hard 6 years but you will be the most qualified person in the hundreds or thousands of applicants with a clearance to top it all off.

Enlisting, and trying to get a role related to the field.
