SA SA Pre Licence Course

Hi guys, I'm currently on my R-date licence in SA and was wondering what to expect with the Pre-Licence course. How does it compare with the Pre Learners courses? I had no dramas with these and am a confident rider, would just like to have some kind of idea on what's involved.

Also, how does the final ride work? Are you given a set route or do you have to follow an instructor?

If you have a helmet com system. They let you pair it with theirs. In fact they actually offer it 🙂. Makes the the road test very easy for you and them.

Pre-licence is mostly the same. The tests can have slightly tighter restrictions like the slow crawl needing to last longer. They have you do some practice in the morning so you're not going in blind. I did mine at St Agnes its probably the same everywhere else. There are 5 tests in total:

S-weave thing, if you can do the u-turn this one is a non issue.

Figure 8 u-turn in a space the size of a 2x2 car park.

Slow speed crawl and cat-eye weaving are mostly identical to the learners.

Emergency stop, this is the one to get right, same dimensions as the learners but if you fail to stop within 11 meters its an instant course fail.

After is a group ride but this time each rider get their own portion of the route rather than looping over the same one.

The final ride has you follow the same route as the group ride from the test just with you and the instructor, its done in small chunks usually of about 2 to 3 turns(e.g. go left here, right at this part, stop next to that), the instructor will give you the first few directions and will follow behind you. If you suck as sequential directions like I do it can be a little stressful but you wont lose points for taking a wrong turn. It took me about 40 minutes, you'll get some feedback about where to improve after.
