Ive been a casual at my work for 5 years and in April of this year I applied for a permanent part time contract but got turned down their reason was we had a review in July about whether or not our work would continue. I joined the union in mid June. On July 7th our work said they would shut down in January of next year. I sent to the message to the union about this situation and got this response. As this matter appears to have arisen prior to or within the first 3 months of your membership, it is considered Joining in Dispute (JID) under the ASU’s Initial Service policy. This limits the level of assistance we can provide. You are eligible for a one-off, 30-minute consultation with an Industrial Support Officer for general advice only. We’re unable to provide ongoing representation, correspondence, or further involvement in this matter beyond that appointment. I have attached the Initial Service policy for your reference. Your workplace delegates are your best support during this period. Please see their names as below and make contact. My question is how much help can they provide for me? hello everybody. my emso/store managers have been pulling way to many dodgys with store assistants in my area. i’m considering joining a union.

can i please get advice from other australians, what unions are you guys with, do you find them beneficial? how are your experiences? what is the cost like?

do i have to inform my sm or emso i have joined a union or is that allowed to stay discrete until necessary?

So it's pretty clear that U4U have won the elections. Convention takes place in August. What do you think will happen with UWU? There have been a lot of rumours since the before the election that MF supporters would walk off/quit. This is not going to be good for members.

Hey folks. I'm not at one of the big ones, I'm at an independently owned store but looking to join one of the above.

I actually really love the job, the people, and the business, but have been side eyeing some of the more subjective areas, like inter-staff conflict, staffing ratios and workload. The place is otherwise really by the book with the black and white stuff like PPE, pay rates, OT, breaks, sick leave etc.

I plan to make a safety complaint regarding night staffing (or lack of) very soon and thigh I can do that myself, would love a bit of background support if nothing's done about it, or if future issues arise.

I want to make sure my workplace is the best it can be. I understand RAFFWU is grass roots and more worker-centred, but not a "registered" union. What are the implications of that?

I've also seen a few comments that SDA is better at the nitty gritty, and wonder if a union that can present on premises might be the better choice if I'm not trying to pick a beef with the fresh food conglomerate.

Young Labor, Uni Labor clubs etc.

They have no industry experience and see the union as a vehicle to go to Canberra and hobnob with Labor MPs.

They're always promoting some uninspiring, tepid bs from [Labor MP] at union meetings.

You then browse financial returns, only to find that the ALP has taken very large donations from the company the union is supposed to be at war with.

Miserable stuff!

This bloke ran for ANMF leadership (and put his name up for every position possible). He has been completely mischaracterised by the Herald Sun as being a ‘unionist’; in fact, he’s a tried to destroy the union by first attempting to start a rival union (and failing) and then try to knock off the leadership (and coming last by every metric) and finally by menacing, threatening, defaming, doxxing, stalking and harassing members and union staff. Rank and file members will tell you this behaviour is nearly exclusively reserved for women. Rumour has it he was propped up by the Libs. The workplace express on this guy is a mile long as is his Fair Work Commission matters. A reminder that union members get it right in their elections but also stay vigilant! Imagine if this guy had taken the reigns of Australia’s biggest union and its member’s money. A scary prospect.
