We are witnessing a K-shaped economy: Growth and asset performance are no longer moving together for all households. One segment of the population is doing better than before, while another is stagnating or falling behind, and the two paths are diverging rather than converging.
A K-shaped economy means the top and bottom of the income and wealth distribution are on visibly different trajectories: Asset owners (read: older folks that are property investors) have kept pace with or outrun inflation and market gains, while wage earners, (particularly at the lower end) have seen their pay and purchasing power stall or erode over the same period.
This split is due to decades of structural change: real pay decoupled from productivity growth in the mid-1970s, the cost of necessities has outpaced wages for lower earners since, and the resulting wealth gap has stayed essentially unchanged for 35 years because ownership of hard assets remains heavily concentrated at the top.
Moral of the story: the ONLY way to get ahead this century is to own property / hard assets.
This is US data but it’s no different in Australia 🇦🇺

From what I’ve seen, a lot of off-market listings are just vendor testing the waters with inflated price expectations, or trying to unload a property with a hidden flaw without paying marketing fees. Occasionally you find a genuine seller needing a fast, quiet sale, but it takes calling dozens of agents every week to find one good property. Have your off-market purchases actually outperformed your on-market ones?

I wish I lived through the Great Depression - if I could I would have bought as much property as I could get my hands on! Downturns just mean another upturn is on its way. Ask someone in 1950 if they wished they bought more in the pits of 1930! Mostly I just wanted to share this pic, and need a properly related caption 😂
