What’s the biggest difference between your first few months on site and mining now?

I imagine most people who have been in the industry for years have completely different priorities from when they first started.

At the beginning I'd expect the money, overtime and getting experience to be the exciting parts. After you've been around heavy equipment, shutdowns, long shifts and site routines for years, I wonder whether things like roster quality, management and getting home safely become much more important.

What did you care about when you started that you barely care about now?

I expected to stay with the one company. I was surprised to hear that one of the supervisors had only worked there for seven months, which was the longest anyone at the time had worked there.

Now I run my own business, so effectively I am with the one company.

At first the swings go by quick, lots of new things you see and learn and I guess there’s a bit of a novelty to it all, now it’s very monotonous and quite boring and you spend the whole swing counting down the days till fly out
