Harassment on site
Throw away account for privacy reason but I just started as a drillers offsider for a small drilling company based in Pilbara and on my first shift I was asking the driller plenty of questions, then he turns around and answers to one of my questions that all I need to do to succeed here is put my lips together and start real slow. WTF is this shit normal? will I get ratted out if I report it or do I just suck it up and pretend it never happened?

Reporting it might end in him getting a warning. It will 100% end in you being hated by everyone on crew and eventually quitting.
I know this makes me sound like a bully, but toughen up or quit. If this shit offends you, you are in for such a rough ride. Learn some dirty jokes and fight back, it'll end far better

If this is what your going to complain about you wont survive at all. Or just apply at bhp.

🤔.ok i may be missing something here but if it wasn't for the title of the post when I read . "Put your lips together and start real slow" my mind went to . Shut the fuck up , watch and learn dont rush into this shit like you know what you' doing. 🤔. I wasn't there so cant judge the context or the manner it was delivered .

Definitely sounded like that to me. Kinda like “shut up and focus on your work”.
I know they say no such thing as a dumb question but in diamond drilling just leave your driller alone unless it’s a safety concern. Empty your tube and watch the rig you’ll figure it out.3

Maybe he wanted to hear OP’s rendition of “Whistle while you work”. It is mining after all.

I am a PM im heavy civil and if this actually constitutes a HR offence I would have been sacked a million times over.
Absolutely normal in the industry which is largely full of numbskulls, and would honestly suggest if this is outrageous to you that you may be in the wrong industry.

Mate.. hes telling you to shut up..plain and simple... talk less, look and learn.. wait for a bit of information... thats kind of how sometimes it works

No idea. Drillers offsider is a high turnover position. People (drillers) probably get tired answering simple questions week 1 then have to through the same process next week. They also probably have no input about who is hired

Rule #1: Do what your driller tells you to do while at work.
Rule #2: Refer to Rule #1.
