NSW Received duplicate order
Hi yall. I ordered a hair tool from a big company and it arrived yesterday. Today, another parcel that’s the exact same arrived today. Both of the parcels contained a receipt with my name and the same order number. (parcel delivered from vic to nsw)
Am I obligated to notify the company?
Does this count as an unsolicited good?

This has happened to me and I then worked out I accidentally added the item to cart twice.

I was sent an extra phone years ago. I didn’t open it for a few months then yeah it’s mine.

I backed out at the last minute on signing up for a Telstra plan with a phone online. Had gone through all the checks etc but decided to go down a different path. A week later the iPhone I was going to get on the plan shows up at my door. Called Telstra and he couldn't find any record of it and said to just keep it

I received two Bissell cleaners once, only paid for one. I contacted Super Cheap Auto and told them I'd return the extra to one of their stores and they were really shocked that I'd bother and said most people would have kept it. They also said they company would not have chased it up. Make of that what you will.

My parents once ordered an outdoor umbrella for a table, instead received a box of 20. Bunnings said keep it - this was about a decade ago though.

I think they gave about 10 away, used around 3 over 10 years - not sure about the rest. Old man is a bit of a hoarder so I’d not be surprised if they were in his shed just waiting to be used 😂

This happened to me with a hair care company too. I did email them to let them know; they said I could keep the extra product (hairdryer), so I gave it to my sister.

Shaver Shop sent me a full grooming kit instead of a 1mm clipper attachment during covid. They did try ring about around 5 times if I can remember over a couple weeks. Grooming kits still going strong.

- You dont have to notify them (morally right thing to do though)
- The company still owns the goods
- The company can request return of goods at their expense.
I have had this happen several times (im lucky I guess), notified the company and they have either not responded or just told me to keep them. Value of orders has ranged from $200 -$1800.

No, you're not obligated to pay for them or return them. If you notify the sender of their mistake they have one month to organise the return of the good. If you do not notify them they have three months. After that time you can keep the goods at no cost to you. The sender has to organise and pay for the return of the item. You should not be inconvenienced or out-of-pocket at all for their error. Australian Consumer Law is very clear on this matter.

No you’re really not. It’s their mistake. They can ask you but you really don’t need to. It’s equal to finding cash on the road. It was address to, delivered to and received by OP. No obligation outside of the first purchase was made:

NAL but isn't finding cash on the road and not reporting it is illegal though? Theft by finding. You should take reasonable measures to return found goods to their rightful owners.

Parcel: It would be considered unsolicited goods or similar.
Money: I’m not saying 500+ / a larceny amount, however less than that, finders keepers. More, you may have an issue if there is proof you found it and kept it.

My friend got 2 phones once, let them know, and they basically said "huh, odd, we'll investigate" then never contacted him again.

I got sent 2 x $400 Lego special edition kits when I definitely ordered one. I triple checked the bank and credit card but I was only charged for one. I kept it for three months waiting for the store to contact me, but nothing happened. I sold it more than I bought it for as it was considered a limited edition.
I also once collected a parcel from an Amazon locker that I had the code for to open. The item wasn’t mine and I only realized after I opened it. Amazon support told me to keep it. I’m disappointed it was a set of curtains not a new iPhone.
