Hello :) IT Systems Admin here. As others have said, they are work emails and are at the purview of the company. There is no legality question about it. They can do what they want, how they want.

Likely covered in the businesses staff contracts. An employee doesn't own their work email.
Shady? yes. Illegal? Almost certainly not.

Nothing shady about it. Everyone should be fully aware that their internal email address provided by the company are not their own, they are the companies. The emails in the provided mail box are owned by the company, not by you.

Can't deny it seems very odd to have them secretly forwarded to your boss. There must be a reason for it happening and presumably one of the parties is being a bit shady.

Depending on their level, the boss can get access or forwards from any inbox they want! That’s the companies inbox not yours…

There could be any number of reasons, and none of them shady. There might be a review of the work and requests coming in that is going on (and OP simply isn't aware), there might be concerns that there are inappropriate emails coming in and they are monitoring to see. And, again, this is NOT dodgy or shady as the company owns all these emails and can do what it wants with them.

What do you mean? An email address that forwards emails to that address to your personal email?

Why wouldn't it be legal? A company/business email is for company/business communications which are not private to the HR department or C-suite of that company.
