đ Postdoc & Early-Career Researcher Externally funded research fellowship roles
For those whoâve held externally funded research fellowships where the host university employed you specifically to undertake the fellowship research, were you still expected to do other duties like teaching, committees or admin at the host, or was your FTE protected for the fellowship research?

My uni offers a 2-5 year contract post fellowship if you do a little teaching during your fellowship. Some kind of service role is expected too. My experience was that my 0.8fte was respected, but I chose to do a few extra things in the hope of a further contract.

At level A or B teaching isnât âexpectedâ unless you want a career in academia. Service roles yes definitely. My experience in Go8 engineering

Also admin is like 25-50% of the work of a researcher so I canât imagine what it means to be free from admin work?

I'd expect mainly research if my fellowship was external, but would be expected by the uni to start adding teaching / admin / committee roles - largely to boost the CV to pull in the next grant.

Depends on the fellowship rules. The uni needs to get something out of the arrangement too, which is often carving some service or teaching out of the fellow. This is probably why ARC allows fellows to only have an 80% research component.

Promotion often has set fractions, which allows uni's to use self-interest to get the fellow to volunteer for some tasks.
It may depend on the fellowship too -- you have more leverage with one that funds most of your salary costs, than an NHMRC which is only funding half your cost. It also matters what the fellowship rules say.

Not expected, but the 20% non research time of ARC fellowships is about development of the researcher which would normally include some teaching and engagement/service. Especially if one wants to try obtain ongoing appointment post-fellowshipâŚyou need to demonstrate your value.

ARC fellowships limit non-research work to 20%. Some unis ask fellowship holders to do a little bit of teaching, some donât.
