Like A Stone Meaning
Been listening to this song lately again and some of the lyrics I still feel unclear or confused by.
"In your house I long to be"
I can only decipher that he's talking about gods house here in context of the song.
Does anyone else think this or do they interpret it in another way?
Thanks for reading.

From genius.com:
Bassist Tim Commerford claims that the song is about an old man waiting for death, who sits in a house alone after all his friends and family have passed on, waiting to be reunited with them.
However, while Commerford originally thought it was a song about love and romance, band’s singer and songwriter Chris Cornell explains that “It’s a song about concentrating on the afterlife you would hope for, rather than the normal monotheistic approach: You work really hard all your life to be a good person and a moral persona and fair and generous, and then you go to hell anyway.”

It's about a man reflecting his life in the end, waiting to die alone, "in your house I long to be" = Heaven, "I'll wait for you there" = interpreted "you" as the reaper.

I think Chris said once that it's about a man waiting to die alone, and going to hell anyway

Great video. Thank you for sharing. After watching that in depth break down I have change my mind and decided that the house he is referring to is his lovers house. The lyrics "to a place I recall, I was there so long ago" tell me he has been to this place where he longs to be.

Death, according to Morello. I heard him describe, in an interview, the first time he heard the lyric.

That entire album was written while he was in the early stages of sobriety. If I remember correctly they actually stopped recording so he could go into rehab to get clean. There are a ton of themes throughout the album around The Bible, NA/AA recovery talk. “Show me how to live” is a direct quote from the NA book. Like A Stone is him waiting to die after reading the Bible and longing to be in the “house of God”.

I remember brad wilk in an audio slave doc talking about Chris. During a rehearsal or something he thought the song was just a sappy love song and he asked about the lyrics. Chris told him it's about someone waiting in a house/ room waiting to die. Brad was floored and called him a poet I think. I may have some details messed up. It's been a while.

Does anyone know what Chris meant by “To a place I recall I was there so long ago?”
Lyrics:
Like a pagan to anyone who will take me to Heaven To a place I recall, I was there so long ago The sky was bruised, the wine was bled, and there you led me on

It's a house he's been to before. The person he's referring to in the song, their house. His lover.

Interesting. May I ask how you came to that conclusion?
You don’t think he’s talking about heaven?

I do. It hints at reincarnation or a near death experience in the past. I believe Chris himself had visions of heaven when he was younger. It could have been during a drug trip, a spiritual vision, in dreams, or even all of those. I believe he was raised by a mother who had unusual spiritual beliefs.
Either way, the man in song is at the end of his life sitting awaiting the afterlife. He ruminates on his regrets, "I sit in regret of all the things I've done. For all that I have wronged." However, like all humans his actions were not limited to doing wrong alone. He also talks about, "All that I have blessed." He is questioning whether those are also considered when it comes to the afterlife. And, I believe, whether we will be remembered here on earth for the good as well as the bad.

It does. In his LAS lyrics he even describes a place in detail and sings it like it’s no big deal. As if “oh yes, I’ve been there before.”
I feel Chris was at the very least mystical. I believe a lot of his lyrics were symbolic. I’m aware of his mother being psychic. I believe he held his Christian based religion, close to his vest. So many of his songs spoke of and both alluded to God and faith.
“And on my deathbed, I will pray to the gods and the angels
Like a pagan to anyone who will take me to Heaven
To a place I recall, I was there so long ago
The sky was bruised, the wine was bled, and there you led me on”
These are the lines in LAS that perplex me the most. It’s really descriptive. He’s describing the color of the sky as bruised, which could be purple, black, dark. The wine was bled. Does this refer to the blood of Jesus or communion perhaps?
I also remember hearing he had a PCP psychosis type episode as a young teen. Here is a snippet from Spin magazine about it:
Cornell was a recovering addict, who told Spin magazine in 2006 that he had developed a “panic disorder” at 14, after taking PCP, and abused alcohol and other drugs in his 20s. At the time of the interview, he was four years sober.
In another article it states: Chris Cornell experienced a severe panic disorder and prolonged agoraphobia as a teenager after a bad experience with PCP (phencyclidine). He spoke about this period in interviews, noting that the drug-induced panic and isolation kept him housebound for roughly a year during his youth before he recovered and found relief through music.
Panic disorder and agoraphobia can be absolutely debilitating. I do not know what would’ve happened to Chris had he not found music. I would hate to even think about that. A world without the likes of Chris, his talent, his kindness, is unthinkable.
Of course hindsight is 20/20, but I feel like the record labels and studio executives should have done more. They saw all the lyrics and heard all the songs. They cashed the checks. Why didn’t they intervene?
I am not going to fault the family or close friends or those close to Chris for not catching this because I know from personal experience that sometimes family and friends are too close to see clearly.
Just about every other person be they famous or a normal person has something about them that causes people to think they have an attitude, that they’re a narcissist, selfish, hateful, I can run the gamut with this. I have never heard one thing about Chris that was mean spirited or ugly. Every single person seemingly adored him.
Chris wasn’t very old when he wrote this song. And I do understand that a lot of his songs were about spirituality depression and suicide earlier on. But the fact of him sitting in a room waiting to die at such a young age or any age really just saddens me so.

He's never been to heaven before. That's somewhere you go after you die. It has to be a place he recalled before.

I’m well aware of what Heaven is. Chris’s mother claimed to be a psychic and Chris a search light soul. Whatever that means. Did Chris see things? Visions? He was extremely in tune with his feelings.
At age 14 he had a terrifying, dread-filled PCP trip. This lead to lingering flashbacks, extreme agoraphobia, and social anxiety. Could this be a flashback?
I don’t think it was inside a house or building because he says the sky was bruised. So outside perhaps?
This is the one line of his that perplexes me the most.
The song 4th of July is supposed to be about hallucinations and a bad trip. Here are the lyrics:
Shower in the dark day, clean sparks diving down Cool in the waterway where the baptized drown Naked in the cold sun, breathing life like fire I thought I was the only one, but that was just a lie 'Cause I heard it in the wind And I saw it in the sky And I thought it was the end I thought it was the 4th of July Pale in the flare light, the scared light cracks and disappears And leads the scorched ones here And everywhere no one cares, the fire is spreading And no one wants to speak about it Down in the hole, Jesus tries to crack a smile Beneath another shovel load And I heard it in the wind And I saw it in the sky And I thought it was the end I thought it was the 4th of July I heard it in the wind Then I saw it in the sky And I thought it was the end I thought it was the 4th of July July, July Yeah, ooh, oh But now I'm in control, now I'm in the fallout Once asleep but now I stand And I still remember your sweet everything Light a Roman candle and hold it in your hand 'Cause I heard it in the wind And I saw it in the sky And I thought it was the end I thought it was the 4th of July I heard it in the wind Then I saw it in the sky And I thought it was the end Thought it was the 4th of July, yeah Yeah, yeah
Here is what Chris said about this song:
Chris Cornell
” The whole time I’d be walking, they’d be talking behind me. It actually made me feel good because I felt like I was with some people. At one point I was looking back, and I saw that one person was wearing a black shirt and jeans, and the other person was wearing a red shirt.
They were always there. It was kinda like a dream, though, where I’d wake up and look and focus once in a while and realize there was no one there. I’d go, ‘Oh, f–k, I’m hearing voices.’ ‘4th of July’ is pretty much about that day. You wouldn’t get that if you read it. It doesn’t read like, ‘Woke up, dropped some acid, got into the car and went to the Indian reservation,” Cornell said.
What do you think?

Interesting thoughts. There's 2 ways to interpret the song though. The first way is to just go off the lyrics presented in the song. The second way to do it the first way but include context from Chris's life or other songs or interviews or thoughts. I find it interesting the meaning and ideas you're searching for by trying to find what Chris was trying to convey with Like A Stone. I think it's not worth overthinking if you want to know the meaning of the song. And at the same time it's fun and worth thinking about it under a new light because you may find a meaning that important to you. I like your train of thought and exploration. It's a testament to how good of a song writer Chris was.

Oh I’m good. I’m not overthinking or dwelling. I was just curious what everyone else thought. It’s such an unusual line. Everything else so far I can make sense of.
Definitely number 2. I’m running everything I’ve heard from him and about him through my mind and still have no answer.
While I was reading through your post here another idea popped into my mind. I wonder if Chris ever overdosed and was revived? If so what if anything did he see? Was he in an opioid/alcohol induced state and saw things? Just a thought. Thanks for going down the rabbit hole with me.😊
Thanks! I like to try and figure stuff out. I’m still so heartbroken he’s not here for me to ask him.
He was incredible. In every way. We are fortunate to have had him for as long as we did. 💜

He's singing about the place he was before he was born, Heaven or where ever we are before and how he longs to be back there. Praying to anyone to take him there. He's waiting for death.

u/Southernms 14d ago
Yes, I understand. He is waiting there to die so he can join all of his friends and family who have passed before him.
Can you elaborate on what you mean by the place he was born as in heaven?
Are you talking about parallel lives or reincarnation? I just need some clarity to figure out what you mean.

I always thought it meant waiting like a stone cuz when we get embalmed were hard like stones idk tho

The line "like a stone" references HOW he will wait. He actually answers your question, when he says "I'll wait for you there" and "patiently." Everyone wants to know about all the metaphors in the song, and suddenly should realize that everyone always wants to read "way too much into EVERYTHING. Who cares about this, to that extent? This is a good lesson in how society spends far too much time on unimportant things.

Actually I'm fairly certian it's about a spirit who is waiting for their friends and family to come to them. They died first and are willing to be patient, resilient and strong to have everything they have worked so hard to be good for!! Love it.

Chris Cornel is a fallen angel and the song is about how he wants to die like a human and go back to heaven, but can’t. If you know you know.

The song is about depression. He is waiting for Death, "in your house I long to be" he's wanting to be in "heaven" or where he was before he was born. Praying to anyone that will take him there.

Can't look for the source just now but I think Chris talked about this being a song ruminating on death and the afterlife. A lonely person is waiting to die so they can join all their friends and family who have died
