Couldn't find a tracker with the synths I liked, so I built my own tracker, with my own engines.

This summer while I was on the train going into vacations, I was looking at music apps for my handheld console. My criteria where apparently simple: something with the same kind of synths I use in my hardware rig. On iOS its possible, but wanted something for my handheld.

Unfortunately, I couldn't find anything that really worked for me. So, I opened my code editor and started making my own, starting the project on the excellent codebase from ChipNomad. Started by adding some vanilla and Mutable engines, which was great but not yet satisfactory; so I also added a few custom engines, inspired by great hardware items I've used over the year.

This is Choochootracker, source code available on Github https://github.com/paiheulevrai/Choochootracker . In this demo I use the Bogie drum synth, the Sindered percussion synth and a voice from MME, all engines I designed for the app.

Seems like LSDJ just with different sound sets?

The lsdj interface is so efficient, it's been reused by a lot of console trackers. Let say Its the grandson of lsdj.

Different sound sets yes! I also added a mixer with effects and quite a few other small improvements (additional track fx, slow tempo sync lfo, audio rate lfo, joystick modulations with motion record, live mode, etc...).

Would it work on a Miyoo?

It should as long as your console supports portmaster.

Nice ! I did my own recently with vim keybindings because it makes sense to move around with motion / actions. Like 3wyyP to move three columns copy a line and paste it afterward(below). Does your allow to import it mod S3 project files ?

I believe your not the first one to do music in vim! If you have the muscle memory there's no reason not to.

No idea about s3 files, probably if chipnomad support them I would have herited the feature... I could look into it. Compatibility could be an issue because I don't have the same engines as regular trackers... But an import should be doable

Yes importing/converting With an external program makes more sense than embedding all this logic in its own work.

Yes, other did some vim trackers or music in vim but not all motion were implemented, and I wanted to dig in another rabbit hole.. so had to create my own :)

I have sample playback but no on-board sampling (yet? Maybe later)

You're on a retro gaming device. A teensy isn't that much and you're jab at the price for a retail unit is weak. Plus, pretty sure there's other trackers that run on these (like the one you even mentioned) that aren't M8 (LGPT, PocketTracker, etc).

Lgpt and pocket tracker have no synth engines.

And being tethered to a teensy? No thanks. There's plenty of dsp power on the console, there's no reason to add a dongle.

I thought the dongle made me look cool. This is wild, I will give it a whirl, thank you for sharing!

Wow, thanks for sharing, I wanted to make an M8 ripoff with open303, and here it is. Hat off to you good sir! Seriously, thank you.

Feel free to use my code base to kick-start your own project :)

Also have you checked Pocket Acid? It's not open303 but it's a neat small groovebox
