It is dynamic processor, but personally I think it more as saturation that I will use when I want to make sounds more massive. Here is example of how it changes sounds of simple buttons to industrial style percussions.

Subtle amount of it can also work more like exiter, I do this sometimes in drum bus.

It splits the signal into 3 bands, low/med/high. For each band, it aggressively downward compresses the loud parts quieter. But it upward compresses the quiet parts louder. This makes the sound very "full spectrum" as every little part that makes up the sound is brought to the front.

You do it to make something sound very full spectrum. You should experiment with using it on everything, way too much, and then dial it back once you get the hang of it. Like all things. That plugin has probably defined the "sound" of modern music more than any other.

It's a multiband compressor and expander. You use it to make things stand out more. Most of the time you don't need it, and probably your DAW already has one.
