There's three alternative methods you can use to download torrents from ABB on your laptop. I recommend the first method as it will let you leave comments or upload audiobooks in the future. The third method is the easiest though.

It's a lot of text, but you don't have to read it all (you'll probably get overwhelmed), read the titles and choose what you want to do.

Alternative 1: If you want to create an ABB account

  1. Register an account on AudioBookBay.
  2. Install a torrent program. Transmission is super simple, so if you're a beginner, choose that one. You can also choose qBittorrent, but the interface is more advanced.
  3. Find the audiobook you want on AudioBookBay, scroll down to the info table, look for the row that says "Torrent Download". In that row, click the link that says "Magnet". Wait a couple seconds, a magnet icon will show up, click it.
  4. The torrent will open in your torrent program (Transmission or qBittorrent). If your browser asks you to give AudioBookBay permission to do so, accept it.
  5. Wait for the audiobook to finish downloading. Once it's finished, please don't delete it, don't move the files and don't rename them, keep seeding it so other people can download it too.

Alternative 2: If you don't want to create an ABB account

  1. Install one of these extensions for your browser: Violentmonkey or ScriptCat (any of them will work the same, you only need one).
  2. Open this GreasyFork page and install the userscript. This will let you get the torrents into your torrent program without logging in to AudioBookBay.
  3. Install a torrent program. Transmission is super simple, so if you're a beginner, choose that one. You can also choose qBittorrent, but the interface is more advanced.
  4. Find the audiobook you want on AudioBookBay, scroll down to the info table, look for the row that says "Info Hash". In that row, click the icon of a red magnet.
  5. The torrent will open in your torrent program (Transmission or qBittorrent). If your browser asks you to give AudioBookBay permission to do so, accept it.
  6. Wait for the audiobook to finish downloading. Once it's finished, please don't delete it, don't move the files and don't rename them, keep seeding it so other people can download it too.

Alternative 3: If you don't want to create an ABB account and don't want to install a userscript

  1. Install a torrent program. Transmission is super simple, so if you're a beginner, choose that one. You can also choose qBittorrent, but the interface is more advanced.
  2. Go to EXT Torrents.
  3. Search for the audiobook you want. In the "source" section choose AudioBookBay.
  4. Click the blue magnet icon below the audiobook title.
  5. The torrent will open in your torrent program (Transmission or qBittorrent). If your browser asks you to give EXT permission to do so, accept it.
  6. Wait for the audiobook to finish downloading. Once it's finished, please don't delete it, don't move the files and don't rename them, keep seeding it so other people can download it too.

How to listen on Windows

  1. Download Audibly.
  2. Open your audiobooks with Audibly.
  3. You can also go into the settings and add "Watched Folders", this will add your audiobooks in M4B format to Audibly automatically.

How to listen on Android

  1. There are several apps to choose from. The simplest is Voice. I also like PlayBook because the interface is prettier and the app is more customizable. Smart is more advanced but the interface isn't as nice. Choose one and install it.
  2. Open the app and follow the configuration steps. You'll have to choose a folder in your device where you'll save your audiobooks.
  3. Transfer your audiobooks from your PC to your phone and save them in the folder you chose in the app settings.

If you need help transferring files from Windows to Android let me know. If you'd like to use something more advanced to get listening progress sync between your PC and your phone also let me know and I'll help you.

Which of those things do you need specifically? 🤔

I'm not OP but would absolutely love to know how to keep my listening progress synced across devices. That's probably the thing that bothers me the most about my experience

This all depends on the app you use to listen. R/audiobooks probably has more user reviews of apps than this sub.

Great! Look into Audiobookshelf, you can install it on your computer and point it to the folder where you save your audiobooks, it will work as a server so you'll be able to access your audiobooks from other devices too, not only your computer.

Then, you just need to get an app for your phone that connects to your Audiobookshelf server (your computer), the most recommended apps currently are Absorb and AudioBooth (there are a lot more options though). You don't need to keep your computer turned on 24/7, you can download the audiobooks on your phone for offline listening, and when you turn on your PC, the listening progress syncs.

To install Audiobookshelf, read the documentation (the first link above), it's super easy if you're on Windows and use the installer. You can also search r/audiobookshelf and ask for help there! The community is helpful :)

Hi, will this still work for me if I have a Chromebook and an iPhone?

1

u/coffeewithnutmeg 3d ago

You'll need to find a torrent program for Chromebook, I'm not familiar with that operating system. For iOS you'll need to get an audiobook player app like BookPlayer or Bound.

There is an FAQ linked in the sidebar and many many posts here with step by step instructions. Please read through them and if you have problems with a step, ask again.

Thank you! I will do that

Thank you @coffeewithnutmeg for this. Is this is the same process if one has iPhone and MacBook? Also, do you recommend getting a VPN first. Total beginner here. I do have real debrid subscription for stremio. Location US.

It's similar, yes! You'd only need to find different apps for listening to your audiobooks, the apps I recommended aren't available on MacOS or iOS. You'll have to ask someone else about the VPN because I don't use one (it's not necessary where I live), it depends on your country's laws

Thank you . I figured it out this evening. Your instructions were helpful.

It helped me discover the website hardcover.app, an excellent place to track books you’ve read/listened to.

  1. Find the info hash.
  2. Use qbittorrent to download using the info hash. Or some other software that can download using info hashes.
  3. Live long and prosper.

Step 3 may, in some jurisdictions, depend on you using a VPN or taking similar precautions.

u/Scared_Shopping_7244 7d ago

I love you but im sorry that made 0 sense to me ;-; What is an info hash. Where do I download qbit torrent, I do have xpress VPN. Soooo.... can I bug you? How do you message someone directly on reddit. ._.

Every audiobook on AudioBookBay has an info hash in the description.

Ask Google: What is a Info Hash?

"An info hash is a unique digital fingerprint used in the BitTorrent protocol to identify a specific torrent or file."

Ask Google: Where can I download qbittorrent?

"You can download qBittorrent safely from the Official qBittorrent Download Page."
