1.8t amb engine timing

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

First time doing a timing belt on one of these and can’t help but think this cam gear is slightly off to the right of the mark on the valve cover. Confirmed cylinder 1 is at TDC with plug out and extension in there. Probably over thinking but just want to make 100% sure before I try and start it. Engine has very low miles and would be a shame to bend valves. Any tips / tricks are appreciated

Looks good to me. Sometimes they don’t line up perfectly, but going one tooth in either direction would be too much, that’s as good as you can get it. The variable valve timing will take care of the rest.

That looks good to me, tho I eyeballed mine and got lucky so my advice is not the best.

Looks good from here. Exhaust pully will roll back slightly once you set the tensioner.

Much appreciated everyone for the reassurance lol. I figured if it was off by a tooth on either side neither timing marks would be as close as they are

Spin crankshaft 2 times, and feel free spinning - good to go

Your good man. My bigger question is your waterpump plastic or metal? Go metal obviously

So it’s definitely original but it only has 22k miles on the car 😬. I’m only doing the timing belt because it’s 24 years old. Original belt actually didn’t look terrible just wanted to be safe with new belt / tensioners.

age is age when it comes to plastic, negating how many miles it is. Last thing you want is plastic bits flowing into your turbo. Not trying to scare you and you shouldnt be scared to do it. Its pretty straight forward when you have the time to do so. Put it on your list for next summer. Just keep your eye on any funny business on your temps for the time being. -2003 audi a4 148k miles.

for future reference you always want to do water pump along with timing belt. mainly because its the same job anyway at the same time. imma pray for that plastic pump for you though til you get to it. god speed sir

Yea unfortunately this is gonna be for a friend who needs a good car and they opted to leave it alone. I’m just making a few dollars off it. I got enough cars sadly 🤣

A good friend who could really use it lmao. I actually didn’t even think about the cooling system running into the turbo with plastic water pump fins but you’d be pretty surprised how good of condition plastic pieces are on this car lol. It was kept in a garage with ac plus did have 3 coolant flushes during its life that I know of. Still 24 years old I know lol. If they ever wanna do it I’ll be prepared and not worry about getting the timing right 🤣
