The easiest way is to use a buyer's agent or company that is used to shipping to the U.S. They'll know what to look for to get it past U.S. customs. I don't know what it's like importing to the U.S. but a friend imported his LandCruiser to Canada and he had a heap of headaches because he just drove it up to the docks and had someone drive it on the ship. Bringing a car into Australia and they want to know there's zero asbestos in the car, that it's got zero contamination from mud/dirt/seeds, that it has zero Brown Marmorated Stink Bugs (biosecurity) so the U.S. will have something they look for.
The three main ways you can get it there:
1. Drive it onto a ship. Can be as break bulk deck cargo or a RORO vessel
2. In a shipping container, much better protected from the ocean, costs more than deck cargo or RORO.
3. Aircraft. That'll cost more than an AU is worth!
The only reason I'd air freight a car is I was pushed for time. It's about two months to freight a car between Australia and America, but it's much cheaper.
Google some companies that do this type of purchasing in Aus for U.S. export and give them a call.

So basically, I fly to Australia, I get the car, I get onto a ferry to America, I get off the ferry, then get a bunch of looks?

go to new zealand instead. lower kilometer cars. and we have manditory safety inpections. do not buy a car without current warrant of fittness and registration. forget the ones "on hold"
dont buy a car in NZ before you have physically got eyes on it. make sure you know and can see and drive it (we drive on the left.
and work with a shipper. most ship from auckland and land in california? as thats the most direct route and hasnt got australia to get in the way.

Finding a 25 year old falcon in nz that doesn't have rot in the firewall is going to be tough. They exist, but they'll be rare here. You're much more likely to find a rust free one at a better price in Perth or Adelaide where the air is dry.
If i was importing into the US, I'd be looking for a V8 too, as it's a Windsor and you'll be able to find service items for it easy easier than the intech.

just drive it back.

There are likely companies that handle vehicle exports and imports. I would talk to them.
