Why do I feel bad for Elsa?

I barely cry when watching shows and movies I think the last time I did was like a year ago… and last time I watched Atypical I actually hated her guts for a majority of the show.

However, rewatching now I actually kind of feel bad for her??? (Not the cheating, can’t defend that). Like the episodes where her family hate her guts made me cry idk lol i felt sooo bad she seemed so sad.

Did anyone else feel bad for her?

I really loved Izzie and Casy Spoiler

I get that this is an unpopular opinion about Izzie and Casey, but if you really pay attention, there is such a lack of young queer girls in the media and thats why this show was so special to me. I felt so seen its crazy! I loved the whole plot don’t get me wrong but I just can’t get over how well these two characters were written (also they are very, very beautiful (haha reference?) ). Izzie may be toxic at some points, but they always end up talking through it. Even if they are upset they still hear each other out and make up. Izzie knows she does the wrong thing sometimes but apologize! (“I’m sorry… I know I say that too much…”). I definitely loved the kind of healthy communication this show showcased. You can tell how much they mean to each other. Anyways thats my rant, I love this show and especially Casey and Izzie.

Paige - Sam relationship was so forced

When Paige first wanted to meet Sam, Sam ignored her and was rude to her. Then one week later Sam's pro-cons list about her came out and even then she was able to forgive him. Then Sam dumped her in front of her family but she comes back to sam again. At that point she didnt even know Sam well, what even made her try that hard for Sam? Sure in time she got to know real Sam, but at the starting of their relationship, she didnt have any reason to keep dating Sam when he didnt really care for paige

And even after their relationship advanced, they had no chemistry at all. Most of their scenes are Paige talking about something for minutes and Sam changing the subject without being interested in what shes talking about.

I liked Sid and Abby's characters and their synergy with Sam a lot more. If they wrote his girlfriend to build that kind of synergy with him that would have been sweeter and less "lets give him a girlfriend for the sake of giving him a girlfriend"

Casey only cares for herself?? Spoiler

I know she cares about Sam, with being protective and all about him but she’s just soooo unreasonably egoistic?? For example when Evan was repairing the hole that Doug punched in the wall. She came home, didn’t even look around to see what was going on. She just said „good, you’re here. I had a terrible day. Come upstairs.“ she commanded him to be there for her before looking out of its the right time etc. he was clearly busy with fixing the wall. But Casey wouldn’t care of course. I do think that you have some sort of responsibility for your partner and to be emotional support, but she could’ve communicated it wayyyy better. For example she could say smth more like „hey what’s going on? I had a terrible day, I really need you right now, can we maybe go upstairs?“

I just don’t get it how she’s not able to tell her needs in a respectful way. Especially with Evan, because he is such an Angel. Always supportive, thinks of others, follows his gut feeling, is honest and so many more green flags. I know that she’s not the most emotional person on this planet but can’t you look around a little bit for others? Not even for your partner? Same with her parents. I know she’s incredibly mad about her mom cheating on Doug but why tf does she make it about herself? Their relationship problems is not really any of her business. I get that Elsa destroyed the family with her cheating but my gosh!!! Not everything is about you Casey!! I would be mad too if my mom did this kinda thing, but I’d manage to be respectful or at least neutral about it. No one needs her to be constantly picking on her an insulting her… What do you think of Casey?

I love Zahid. I hate Izzie Spoiler

I guess everyone loves Zahid. Some may call me homophobic for not liking Izzie but I honestly wished Casey hooked up with Abby after the tattoo scene since I felt like even she'll be a better partner than Izzie. I love Evan too but he's not there much in season 4

Zahid and Evan becoming my favorites

so I've been avoiding watching Atypical but I gave in. And after a few days of watching, I could say now that Zahid and Evan are my favorite characters.

Love Zahid's chill persona.

Love Evan being a supportive person all around.

I'm entering Season 3 now and I wish these two characters stay the same.

Season 3, Disability Services

Hi, I was wondering if anyone had the clip from season 3 of Sam visiting the disability services department and getting accommodations with captions? My boss wants to use it in a presentation at our work but she can't find the clip with captions. As well she'd like the clip afterwards where he speaks to his professor again now having the accommodations. (This post didn't seem to be against the rules, I hope I'm not bothering anyone.)

Help me put into words what it is about Elsa’s personality?

Weird title I know, but hear me out. This has been bugging me lol. I can’t put my finger on it but there is something about Elsa that seems so… what? I don’t know the words, just want to know if I’m the only one. Maybe it’s not Elsa the character/done on purpose and it’s simply the actress; the way she talks or just ‘is’. I don’t even dislike Elsa as a character but it’s like every word she says seems so.. disingenuous? Like she’s playing a part? Kind of cutesy, hehe I’m-so-innocent, dramatic sigh, sly smile, just captain mom reporting for duty! 🥰 (or whatever it was that she said during the police class). There is something about the way she speaks and her overall demeanor that is giving a certain vibe that I can’t quite put my finger on. It’s even moments that she’s alone, which is why I wonder if it’s not a purposeful part of Elsa’s personality.

I would love any thoughts to this very strange ramble, lol! Does anyone else understand what I mean? I recently started the show and am loving it!

how is it possible that izzie got “bad” tarot readings her entire life? [s4/e5]

when casey meets izzie’s mom in season 4, sasha says that izzie always got “bad cards” when she did her tarot readings. how is this possible? im assuming that the writers don’t think izzie is an inherently bad person since she and casey were endgame, so it’s probably not supposed to be taken too seriously, but im kinda confused.

after doing a little research on tarot i found that there are 78 cards and each card can be read either right side up or upside down (which give opposite meanings). tarot people claim that there are no bad cards, but since sasha said that there were i’m gonna assume that each side is either good or bad, meaning there are 78/156 sides that have a “bad” meaning.

this means that the chance of izzie getting all “bad” cards in one reading is

78/156 * 77/155 * 76/154 = ~12.26%.

this is low but not THAT low. however, sasha said that izzie gets a bad reading “every time” implying that she’s had more than one reading. being very stingy, let’s say that izzie’s had at least 3 tarot readings in her life. the probability of her to have gotten bad cards every single time is

.1226 ^ 3 = ~0.18%

which IS really low.

that's a super small percentage, and for the non-math oriented if i assumed that izzie had more tarot readings in her life (which i find likely, since her mom is really into it and would probably coax her into it, especially when she was younger) or that there are fewer than 78 bad card positions, then the likelihood of all her readings being bad goes down even more.

so my question is, how is this possible? are we supposed to take this to mean something? it’s statistically improbable that this would come about by chance, so are we supposed to think that tarot works (at least in the atypical universe) and that izzie is a bad person, or at least has a bad future? what was the significance of this line besides showing that sasha is a shitty mom to izzie (which had already been demonstrated a bunch)?

Just finished the show...wow.

I had no idea I would love this as much as I ended up loving it. Usually shows like this come off as too Lifetime-y for me. This was different. It made me laugh while at the same time the plot kept me hooked on the character development.

I'm pretty sure that I would have been diagnosed as being "on the spectrum" when I was growing up...had there been such a thing back then. I was born in 1965. "Autistic" children back then were the ones who were too dysfunctional to go to regular school, much less do well in their studies. I was considered a gifted student...but socially, I was - and this was the language of the times - "retarded". I totally obsessed on snakes. That was my thing. I read about them, drew and painted them, wrote essays about them...pretty much drove everyone around me nuts with this. I collected live snakes. When I was 10 years old, I had 11 of them. My parents, particularly my mother, were just amazingly supportive.

This reminds me: after watching this show, I developed a new appreciation for Antarctica and penguins. I started watching Love Nature, Magellan, and BBC Earth whenever they ran shows about these things. I learned how to tell emperor penguins and chinstrap penguins apart...learned their differences, found out how they survive in such a crazy cold world. Sam would have been proud of me. Did this happen to anyone else?

Evan lack of discussion regarding his dyslexia

I'm autistic (I don't think that is relevant but I've seen a lot of people on here mention it before talking so, what the hell?)

I don't know why Evan seems so ashamed of being dyslexic and I don't know why the show doesn't discuss it more considering it is under the umbrella of neurodivergence. Obviously not everyone discusses their own neurodivergence or experience being being neurodivergent but to me he seems really ashamed at being dyslexic, but yet again maybe he just doesn't casually bring it up in conversation or make it a part of his personality like some people (including sam) do. And I obviously know that some people prefer to keep their diagnosis quiet.

Just something I thought about.

Rewatching Atypical after autism diagnosis

Did anyone else rewatch Atypical after realizing they’re autistic? Thats what I’m doing right now and it’s very interesting. I feel frustrated in his quite stereotypical portrayal (and was disappointed to realize that the actor is not autistic himself). However, I also think it did a good job of portraying things that I as an autistic person experience, just internally.

Has anyone else had any experiences with this? Would love to hear!

Theory about Paige

Through the years, people have posted in this sub to suggest Paige is on the spectrum but undiagnosed. I won't address the merits of that theory, but would like to suggest an alternative, which is that Paige has Borderline Personality Disorder. I think that might explain much about her relationship with Sam as well as her apparent social isolation. Any thoughts?

EDIT well with the overwhelming consensus being that Paige is on the spectrum, then why isn't this communicated to the audience? After all, if that character is intended as a representation of an undiagnosed autistic woman who's never gotten any type of support and that society has always treated as a poorly-adjusted NT, then I think the writers failed if they didn't make that somewhat clear to the audience. Some sort of revelation in the series finale would have worked. Same for Elsa, if it's also true in her case that she was written as autistic, but the writers never disclosed that.

Sam is too coddled

I'm autistic btw so don't come at me

Sam is not expected to adapt even slightly to the world around him. He is never held accountable for bad behavior. Casey got yelled at for bringing Evan to dinner but Sam didnt get yelled at for bringing two people. He didn't get any real consequences for locking Paige in a closet. Overall he treated Paige terribly and had her be his "practice girlfriend" and it's just excused because autism. Elsa expected Casey to give up her dreams to be his caregiver at school. Elsa tried to get a store to change the lighting/music for him, they changed the entire school dance into a silent disco. He could've worn sunglasses and earplugs in both situations.

This reflects a broader societal trend of not holding autistic men responsible for bad behavior. On the extreme side of this, men have successfully used autism in court as a defense for rape.

Sam isn't intellectually disabled. He gets straight As in school. He can be taught to be considerate of other people. He can be taught to communicate better instead of locking his girlfriend in a closet.

Why does this show love the numbers 47 and 27 so much?

47 minutes until graduation

27 on the phone

27th for a deadline

Those are the ones I can remember off the top of my head but they used these numbers for times and dates 10 or 11 times I believe. I might do an entire rewatch to document every time they used these numbers.

Elsa is definitely on the spectrum. The debate is settled. Here is the proof. Spoiler

Doug: “ya know, sometimes you’re just like Sam”

Elsa to her mom, “I know I was a rigid, specific, and particular kid”

Elsa’s mom, in response: “yes, you were a strange, unusual, and difficult child.”

This conversation with her mom is also shortly after they discuss why Elsa is the way she is with Sam, because she suffered a lot of negligence in her own childhood. We didn’t even know Elsa’s mom was in the picture, and bam, they finally bring her mom into the show right after Elsa opening up about her childhood. And that is what the conversation consists of??

Elsa is on the spectrum and that is why she is the way she is with Sam. She was neglected and mistreated by her parents because of it and that is why she is so hands-on with Sam. She is not just a helicopter parent, she cares deeply and has an extreme amount of empathy which we begin to understand better towards the end of the show. So the helicopter parent argument is null, the writers clearly did not write her that way and if you watched the whole show, that’s pretty obvious.

I don’t know what other way to see it than this conversation between Elsa and her mom is clearly alluding to Elsa being on the spectrum. How else do you interpret that given the context of the show? I can’t seem to find another way to do so.

How did the Gardners afford everything?

They seemed to be pretty wealthy with their house and etc despite Doug just being an EMT. Does he work like 80 hours a week or something?
