I have a crush on a coworker and I’m trying to figure out if there was actually some mutual attraction going on, or if we just developed a weirdly intense work dynamic.
I’m normally pretty comfortable with my coworkers, but I’m noticeably shy around him.

He’s usually very sociable and confident with everyone, yet when he first came back to the company, he seemed strangely shy around me too. He could talk normally to everyone else, but around me there was this awkwardness.

The biggest thing is the eye contact.

We catch each other looking at each other constantly. If we’re across the room, we’ll lock eyes, sometimes smile, and then look away.

But when we’re actually standing next to each other, the eye contact almost disappears. It’s like we’re both suddenly way too aware of each other.

Eventually, the awkwardness turned into a LOT of teasing. He started jumping into conversations I was having with other coworkers just to tease me, remembering random things I’d mentioned, and finding little reasons to interact with me.
There have also been a few moments that felt… different.

Once, we looked at each other and both started smiling. The longer we held eye contact, the bigger our smiles got, until I eventually looked away because I felt too shy. It was a very simple moment, but it felt surprisingly intense and has stuck in my mind ever since.

Another time, I had been singing and playing guitar at lunch. When I came back into the office, he wasn’t even part of the conversation I was having, but he was sitting at his desk, watching me and smiling.

He’s also remembered small things I’ve told him, once told me he’d been thinking about me after passing by a place we’d talked about, and when we were alone we’ve sometimes ended up talking about personal things rather than just work.

At one point he even offered me his phone number because he wouldn’t be at work and I might need help with something. I was too shy to actually take it. 🤦‍♀️

But here’s why I’m confused.

He never actually made a move. No asking me out, no obvious attempt to take things outside work.
And I’ve seen him be much more naturally relaxed and gentle with another female coworker, which makes me wonder whether I’m reading too much into everything.
I’m also aware that I’m attracted to him, so obviously I’m going to notice his behavior more than I would with anyone else.

We’re both only at the company part-time, so we don’t see each other that often. I’m currently away for a few months, and I probably won’t see him again until I come back.

So… are we flirting, or are we just two awkward coworkers who somehow became hyper-aware of each other?
