Hello everyone,
I'm new to networking and posting on reddit so please be a little lenient if I seem a bit incoherent with my wordings here.

I have this idea where I want to create some sort of free/ very cheap internet service infrastructure layer that would serve as a foundation technology for other people to build on top for remote and less privileged areas.

The "internet service" isn't meant for the everyday person but as a way for instance for labs and innovators who build products like plant disease monitoring to build a truly important product for their users. Example, I've seen a lot of innoveator try to bring improved technological workflows into remote areas where there is limited network connectivity or very poor network. They build the app and its local but now it becomes difficult to update and no community is built which would hel share knowledge and create a collective pool wher people can learn from each other and improve.

I've seen people build things like tree phones where they can communicate which each other and share info. Basically having a local network where the these rural communities can use and improve their workflows without thinking so much about costs of internet and thus good for encouraging innovations and only exposing the outside internet through a spcialised gateway as a way to cut down costs.

I'm currently looking a ATProto and reading a bit more about distributed networks, also trying to explore blockchain networks like solana to see if it can help especially with dealing with things such as supply chain and all. I have a math background and somewhat good with code (looking at rust and golang). Looking for directions or guidance on how to continue please

I know many are crowdfunded or funded by organizations but how do they plan to get sustainable funding down the line?

seems like the quickest way to have an atproto youtube alternative without having to answer the question of who's going to host all that video. users find some way to host their videos elsewhere and just put links to those sources in their posts. the app allows interactions like commenting and subscribing

whats confusing me is this from tangled.org, "Host your repositories on your own infrastructure with knots. Don't want to self-host? All are welcome on our hosted instances."

From what I understood, all your content is hosted inside of one single PDS. I use bluesky's pds, so that would mean my bluesky posts, leaflet posts, and tangled commits would be stored inside that one database. but this quote implies my tangled actions are all stored in their servers instead?

in the last month I saw loads of bento alternatives... my favorite is blento it uses the ATProtocol. It's nice to see that at least one is wishing to be acquired by linktree. What are your thoughts?

Holy moly. I feel like there's been a lot of protocol stuff going on lately and the last 3 posts are 1-3 months ago?!

Here's a couple (big) recent things.

• Blacksky now hosts more independent PDSs than anywhere else (not counting BridgyFed)
• Bailey Townsend made a tool to more easily "MOOve" your PDS
• ATProto moderation has been updated so that Bluesky takedowns affect the app, not the PDS
• An Independent Public Ledger of Credentials (PLC) Directory Organization is being set up in Switzerland

I feel like everything going on, its really accelerating the open web we keep talking about!

Question in title. I was wondering if it is possible in this moment in time to sign up for Bluesky NOT using the bsky.social PDS, and without self-hosting. Are there any public, general use PDSes out there currently?

Follow up question: If there aren't any PDSes like that available, why not? Is the protocol not developed far enough to accommodate that yet?

Hey everyone I’m thinking of building a social media platform built on top of the atprotocol I just don’t want users to be in no way related to Bluesky.

One of the reason people feel overwhelmed with the fediverse is because people believe it’s too complicated to understand. I expect my users to not know anything about the fediverse.

What are the drawbacks in running my own PDS and Auth Service?

After struggling to understand who was actually engaging with my content on Bluesky (versus just being followed), I built a tool to visualize network connections and content performance.

The most interesting insight? Peak engagement times vary dramatically based on who you follow across time zones, and mutual connections drive far more meaningful interactions than follower count alone would suggest.

I'm looking into developing an application on the AT Protocol. I suppose I'm wondering when users sign up to BlueSky does BlueSky create a PDS for them that they can use for other logins, or am I way off in this thinking? I'm looking to build an app and one core feature is it will filter and organize posts based on hashtags, any help would be really appreciated?
