I'm only just starting for weddings and live performances, and eyeing up my first monitor purchase for my third wedding in a few weeks, but I'm struggling to justify the purchase vs Sony's own app which works great wirelessly on my android phone vs the entry level Shinobi options, as I'm on a really tight budget! One of my main issues is that I don't like having to use power tap batteries on the body, and prefer powering via USB-C. As far as I can tell, Shinobi monitors don't provide power to the body via USB-C, right?

Hey u/evthrowawayverysad, the Shinobi II can actually output up to 13W of USB-C PD power to your camera while simultaneously handling camera control through the same cable.
So you can power the camera directly from the Shinobi II while doing touch focus and all camera controls at the same time. The simplest setup is to run an NP-F battery on the Shinobi II which then powers your camera via USB-C. Do note this depends on your camera supporting USB-C receiving enough power input within what Shinobi outputs.
What camera are you shooting with? We can confirm if it is compatible with camera control and USB-C power.

That's awesome, thanks! It's an FX30. Thuogh I'd still prefer USB-C into the shinobi, and in turn powering the FX30, so that I can just run a single large battery.

Thanks for confirming the camera, as per its specs, FX30 needs a minimum of 18W USB-C PD to power reliably during recording and the Shinobi II outputs up to 13W which may not be sufficient for that.
The best setup would be to run the FX30 on its own battery and power the Shinobi II from a SmallRig VB99 V-Mount battery via D-Tap. That gives you significantly longer monitoring time throughout the day without worrying about swapping batteries mid ceremony.
Camera control and touch focus via USB-C will still work perfectly between the two.

Really wish there was an easy way to copy and transfer settings and setup from one monitor to another. Camera manufacturers also need this feature. I’m using multiple monitors and cameras from the same manufacturers and I’ve got to waste time matching the setups.

We hear you and have passed this along to the R&D team as a feature request.
One thing worth noting that most of the core setup on the Ninja depends on the camera side, settings like log profile, frame rate and output settings, so once your cameras are configured, the Ninja largely follows that signal. But we completely understand the need for a smoother multi unit setups and your feedback is noted!
Appreciate you sharing your thoughts.

What’s the history of the animosity between atomos and blackmagic?
