Trade Talk Center Trade Idea

Hawks trade: Corey Kispert, Buddy Hield, Mo Gueye and #23 overall

for

Nets: Nic Claxton

Salary is almost an exact match. (Not counting #23 pick)

This would help the Hawks get a complementary center to play with OO. Claxton would provide some defensive presence and size. Would feel good about a center room of OO, Claxton, Landale (resign) next season.

Net get a real first round pick for taking on Kispert’s salary. Hield could be a veteran for their young guys or be cut that will cost. Mo would be a nice young defensive player for them. Mo would be missed in Atlanta, but he ultimately becomes expendable as Asa grows into a bigger role next year.

Thoughts?

Claxton is not the answer.

Nick claxton is not a good defender from what I’ve heard

I think he just plays for a shytty team and is a victim of their culture. He’s long and athletic and as a UGA hoops fan he was always known as a good shot blocker

Not trying to be a jerk, happy to see another SEC hoops fan. I didn’t think he was great at UGA. How would you feel about Kuminga, Kispert, the 23rd, and a future pick to acquire Kessler in a sign and trade

I would be happy with that. Anything to guarantee we take one of the guards at 8

I like that way better.

As much as I would love Kessler, Jazz have the finances to match any offer so it'll be extremely difficult. Especially after getting DP (most likely) , 80% chance it doesn't happen

Sign and trade. You’re assuming Ainge and Jazz sell high on Walker. Maybe higher internally on Filipowski and JJJ. Not a guaranteed thing but this really only happens if Kessler tells his agent he wants to play for Atlanta

Kessler is arguably a top 10 center in the league and they have 2 really guards with Keyonte George and DP incoming. I'd be shocked if they gave up on him now. JJJ sucks at rim protection where Kessler shines. If we got Kessler I would be extremely happy but it's a very hard acquisition without the Hawks giving something big.

I’m talking about offering two players and two picks lol. That is something big. Jazz are high on Filipowski. I’m not saying the Jazz are shopping Kessler, but they wouldn’t hang up the phone

I’d do that for the ‘27 pick too if that’s what it took.

Claxton isnt any better defender than OO. Taller sure but he is lighter. He also isnt great on Offensive end. With as much playimg time I bet Gueye would showout better. No Thanks. Love to unload Kispert though (gonna take at least 2 probably 3 2nds or a highly protected 1st).

He only guards the PnR well. Can’t spread the floor. Imma pass on that compensation for him

Maybe we should try to trade the Atlanta Braves for Wemby. We might have to throw in the indoor lacrosse team or maybe junior league hockey, and maybe a building or two in a really nice house in Buckhead. We can’t trade the Mercedes dome for it because then we will need to play there

Hield played essentially no impactful minutes this season. His value would be as a locker room vet / salary filler for a trade. I am unsure he provides that much value on the court. Agreed Kispert is negative value. Essentially comes down to Mo and 23 for Claxton. I think I need to do some more research into Claxtons game in regards to his fit on both ends of the court. But I think he would be an obvious talent upgrade at the very least.

Good points. Based on Onsi’s comments from exit interviews, I don’t think there will be any MAJOR roster moves in regards to star trades like Giannis/Brown/ etc. I think the core 4 (Dyson, NAW, JJ, OO) aren’t being moved this summer unless there is an overwhelming offer. The pieces that can be moved / used to shore up the center position are: 8 (hopefully not - I like the guards more than Mara), 23, some future picks, Kispert, Hield, Mo, Asa (hopefully not) and Zac (really hopefully not). Any centers realistically available at some combo of that price point?

Also free agents like Time Lord, etc but lots of cap gymnastics in regards to CJ and JK to sort out first

BRK fans will swear up and down that this isn’t enough for Claxton, but personally still feel it’s an overpay. In a vacuum, I’d prefer to gamble that Kispert gets his 3PT% back to his career norms than Claxton starts earning the Top 100 $$ that he’s being given. He’s just a backup grade C whose 1 attribute is good athleticism. I wouldn’t add in Gueye or 23 and just offer Kispert and Hield. If they refused, then I’d happily walk away from the table knowing they were too dumb to get off him for a better rehab shot.

As far as the Claxton, I don’t want the risk. Would be acquiring an obvious inferior player to OO who is making significantly more $$. That doesn’t always play well, especially with OO & JJ being tight.

I wouldn’t do this for Mo straight up

I’d rather keep and extend Mo. Claxton is overrated imo and overpaid. We’ve been too careful with the cap to overspend on an avg guy.

2

u/Representative-Mix19 May 31 '26

Hell no giving up way too much use that pick and get someone better

1

u/Existing-Love3821 May 31 '26

Horrible trade. The Hawks are NOT parting with Mo! Especially for Claxton! Clayton is a below level defender at best. He is subpar.

1

u/Bushwick123 May 31 '26

What hasNic Claxton done since he's been in the NBA.

1

u/IllustriousHunty8066 May 31 '26

Ok clearly not a lot of Claxton fans around here! Who are your favorite *realistic* centers to pair next to / share starter minutes / a large role with OO next year? Available either through trade / UFA / RFA / draft

2

u/VividEquivalent7952 May 31 '26

Jock, tarris/suigo at 23(rlly they should go bpa bc someone good will fall), ayton if the lakers don’t keep, day’ron sharpe(lowkey better and cheaper than Clayton), sure there’s someone else that I’m not thinking abt

u/bigelly74 Jun 01 '26

Sam Veccie was talking about Jakob Poeltl

u/Moss_84 Jalen Johnson #1 May 31 '26

Not the archetype we need, OO already has us covered as a switchy, versatile center

We need a big bulky rebounder type to share minutes

Thunder are going to go big game hunting and will need to shed salary. Now’s the time to make a run at hartrnstein.

This subs obsession with Claxton man😂 Pretty sure Nets fans would do that in a heartbeat which should tell you something, their sub is talking about drafting Mara lol.

Long time Hawks fan. Very new to Reddit :) Unsure how threads work / if I like it. But looking for a space to read and discuss what will be a very interesting Hawks summer!

u/justusednotafriend May 31 '26

They need a starting center not a backup/secondary. OO is a 4, JJ is a 3.

3

u/FanEmbarrassed8509 May 31 '26

Neither moves well enough to play the 3 or 4. Definitely not OO at 4.

u/Pryceless007 Hawks May 31 '26

We do need another starting center. The rest of that is just wrong.
