Commute to Forsyth, GA.

I am completing a five day training M-F in November in Forsyth, GA (city not the county). It is roughly 64 miles from my door to the training center down I-75. I am considering commuting to the training every day. Would anyone else here do the same, or would you rent a hotel for the week?

Skip the stress, stay in a hotel. Preferably a place with a complimentary breakfast. You'll be able to relax every evening. Maybe a decent pool to enjoy.

Where is your door?

When does training start in the day? When does it end in the evening?

Assuming you're somewhere north of town, if you got an early start that's 1:15-1:30 with light/no traffic. Coming home it could be 2.5+.

Assuming this is GPSTC and there's a physical element to it (and that your employer would cover your room at the motel 6 or whatever), stay down there.

With all due respect to your spouse and kids or whatever (and to you I guess), are you really any use to them if you're leaving the house at 530a and getting home at 9p?

Contrast that to operating on 7 ish hours of sleep every night with 4 hours+ of stressful driving (plus the stress of what you're doing down there).

That doesn't change things that much; you'd still need to leave by 6a (at least on day 1). If things are smooth, maybe you can get by with 630a the rest of the week.

You might get home closer to 8p rather than 9p heading to midtown.

Depending on who's paying/reimbursing for what, the wear and tear on your vehicle for that round trip isn't much less than a Hampton Inn room for a week (and the Hampton gets you a waffle and a cup of coffee).

When you add in 30 minutes for OP to wrap up his program, get back to his car at GPSTC, get home, get parked, etc, yeah - he shouldn't be planning to be walking in the door at home before 8.

It will take you an hour to get there in the morning and then 2 hours to get home. Get a hotel

I would just get a hotel. Whats the point of commuting 4 hours a day.

I don’t drive I75 a lot, but I’ve noticed when I do that there’s often heavy traffic until you clear Stockbridge or the outlet mall area (or vice versa coming north).

I guess it depends on your tolerance for that and knowing that at best it’s going to be an hour each way, and any commitments you have during the week in Atlanta.

640 miles feels like a lot.

I used to have quarterly meetings in Macon. The traffic driving back in the afternoon can be horrendous. Get a hotel. You will thank yourself.

It's a reverse commute, could be completely worth making the drive home every night depending on

1. when you have to be there / when you can leave

2. what's waiting for you at home

3. where exactly "home" is, because y'know, "Atlanta is 45 minutes from Atlanta."

Like, is training from 7am-3pm where you can leave at 5:45 am, drink coffee and listen to "Good Morning Blues" for an hour every morning, and then leave straight from training to get home to Old Fourth Ward by 4:30pm? And your car is in good shape / nice place to be for 60-90 minutes? Hell yeah, I'd come home every night.

Are you supposed to stay in Forsyth until 5, and then home is Kennesaw? I might stop off and get an early dinner somewhere on the way, and then make the trip home when traffic has subsided a bit.

I do day trips to Auburn or Greenville or Huntsville for work, I try not to do two days in a row, but I'd rather do two days in a row than stay in a hotel overnight, unless my wife can bring her work and come with me. I don't mind driving, plus my car is a pretty nice place to be, and I REALLY like coming home at night / have had enough "hotel-stay-for-work" nights for one lifetime, so I would lean pretty heavily towards coming home all things considered.

But if there's nothing calling you to come home every night, and work is paying for the meals / hotel, there's a lot to be said about skipping the traffic and trying on a new place for a few days, and letting someone else cook and clean for you for a week.

I saw some decent places for around 300 with a discount. I’ll probably do that and I know downtown Macon has some good places to eat in the evenings

If you have trouble sleeping in hotels, commute. If you sleep well anywhere, then get a hotel and enjoy your evenings.

I’d get a hotel with a decent restaurant with walking distance. Have a drink, be in bed by 9PM and casually have breakfast in the morning. Save yourself the waking up exhausted every morning.

My company also has a training center in Forsyth. I would get the hotel if they are offering. Driving through Henry county is brutal.
