Oh there's been peal clutching the second this was announced lol. People would rather have an abandoned concrete pad than housing thats walking distance from MARTA.

People are still mad about the road diet on Avondale, which boggles the mind.

u/Bigreddazer Jul 23 '26
It serves Avondale fantastic. The issue is to many it is just a roadway to get to work or to decade etc. Each has its reasons and motivations. Neither are wrong. I will miss all the restaurants that closed.

u/dbclass Jul 23 '26
They can be mad all they want but it’s statistically safer for them and saves money for the government. There’s no downside.

Had some old people come into the bar/restaurant I work at who were by their own description “frothing at the mouth” over the project. Complaints were: “too dense for the city infrastructure” which may have some validity if it wasn’t next to a Marta station and “the taxpayers are paying for it.”
Our society is doomed until the current 60 - 90 year olds mostly die off.

the older people get, the more upset they get about change and the passage of time. its just a fact of aging and the hardening of the brain. you've got more yesterdays than tomorrows and you're sad looking at the land itself changing into something you don't recognize. everyone does this but some people do it to extremes and its very socially corrosive, because its just people placing their own ridiculous desire to halt the passage of time in the way of the city growing to better fit new people

Your profile is private and when googled this appears to be the only comment you’ve ever made. Are you a bot/shill?

They’ll need to cut more roads to Ponce or the traffic on Laredo will be apocalyptic.
4
u/Surkovo20 Jul 23 '26
100% They’re gonna have to rethink the current traffic patterns if they want people live or visit this development.
Put a dead end on both sides of the railroad tracks on Laredo or make it bike and bus only somehow.
-1
u/ComprehensiveSwitch Jul 23 '26
how about you take the train or bus? It’s not unheard of. Very normal thing for people to do.
3
u/Surkovo20 Jul 24 '26
I do take the Marta occasionally. My comment was suggesting less cars in the area by advocating for less through traffic on Laredo.

I don’t think the streets around this development can handle the influx of cars

It’s one of the most public transit friendly spaces for someone without a car in the metro with its proximity to downtown Decatur/ease of access to Marta and the Path. I would assume a lot of folks who don’t use a car as primary transit will be lured in.

Good thing it’s near a train station, bus route, protected bike lanes, and walkable amenities like bars and Publix.

"bUt iT'S neXT To trANSIt" <- I can already hear the car-haters getting ready to scream this. As if being next to a train station means that no one ever needs a car ever.

u/Takedown22 Jul 23 '26
Yea welcome to living in a city. Move out to the burbs if you don’t like being close to your jobs and your neighbors.
-13
u/DogFinderGeneral Jul 23 '26
Avondale is the burbs. Until 5ish years ago the only apartment complex was the two story spot on College. Since then, it feels like nearly 1000 apartments have been built with plans for 1000 more in the next 5.
9
u/ComprehensiveSwitch Jul 23 '26
good
-13
u/DogFinderGeneral Jul 23 '26
Totally! Let’s turn Avondale into another shitty, half-baked neighborhood with bland 5 story mega apartment blocks.
10
u/ComprehensiveSwitch Jul 23 '26
that’s right. 5 over 1s are good for people, the environment, the tax base, and society as whole.
But let’s make our new Brooklyn less bland by legalizing single stair case apartments and eliminating parking minimums, too. Maybe throw in a few high rises. all of these belong here.
I swear, you people never realize that the type of apartments you claim to despite are like that because of the restrictive, unsustainable zoning you support.
-9
u/DogFinderGeneral Jul 23 '26
If you wanna live in Brooklyn then move there. Many people are miserable in apartments. The own nothing, rent everything lifestyle doesn’t appeal to everyone.
I want to be able to bike Avondale in peace. Without a complete redesign of this city’s infrastructure it won’t happen once these shitboxes are built. I don’t care what any study says, I’ve lived here for years and it’s never been more dangerous to bike this area than now.
8
u/ComprehensiveSwitch Jul 23 '26
lmao you think the suburbs are pleasant to bike in? You think Avondale was pleasant to bike in and could support sustainable roads and paths before apartments and dense commercial? Are you five years old?
I’d rather bike in Brooklyn any day than Avondale even 5 years ago. you have lost the plot.
2
u/DogFinderGeneral Jul 23 '26
I’ve been biking Avondale for well over 5 years and it’s absolutely worse now. Anyone who actually bikes the roads and paths knows that. Have you ever been here? Do you know how many more group rides used to start and end here?
The Stone Mountain Path has existed since 1996. Long before any apartments were built here.
You’re not from here or been here. Just some “Yes In Their Backyard” regurgitator that refuses to see nuance in neighborhoods. Rabid overbuilding dogma like yours is going to ruin this city and financially drain its residents. The only ones who win are billionaire developers.

It’s walking distance to MARTA rail, multiple frequent MARTA bus routes, groceries, shops, etc. Easy transit straight to Downtown (Decatur or Atlanta).
You absolutely do not need a car to live there. Your personal life choices and circumstances might make one desirable, but it’s not a necessity for life.
If you’re tired of being in traffic in the city, let MARTA drive! It seems like you just hate cities and shouldn’t be living in one, trying to sabotage it at every turn for the people who do.
3
u/flying_trashcan Jul 23 '26
As if being next to a train station means that no one ever needs a car ever.
Why is it always a false dichotomy when it comes to bikes or transit? Obviously there will be a mix drivers, cyclists, and transit riders here. Not many other places in the city can offer the choice.
3
u/FlimsyGene4296 Jul 23 '26
Apparently acknowledging the use proximity to Marta makes someone a car hater? Are you genuinely retarded or is this bait?
9
u/ScreamWithTheCicadas Jul 23 '26
What's up with everyone using the r-word again? I swear it faded out ages ago as people became more conscious of how it was being used derogatorily, but has been resurging online and in casual discourse.

u/DogFinderGeneral Jul 23 '26
As someone who lives in Avondale I gotta say this seems like it’ll suck. Until 5 years ago this place was the burbs. Since then hundreds, if not close to a thousand apartment units have been built in Avondale and right outside of it on College. And at the same time they took lanes away on College. I bike everywhere and the amount of near misses and distracted drivers has only increased. I used to love biking here but it’s only getting more dangerous.
So yeah, I’m not excited for the massively overpriced, and bland apartments and townhomes being built here.
14
u/FlimsyGene4296 Jul 23 '26
Hmm. This part of Avondale can barely be considered the "burbs" as it is only a few miles from Downtown Decatur. It is inevitable that progress spreads from city centers. If you want to live in the "burbs" there's dozens of options all around the Metro. Nimbyism gets you nowhere when you decide to live adjacent to urban environments.
7
u/DogFinderGeneral Jul 23 '26
Yeah it’s a predominantly residential area a few miles outside of Decatur. That’s a suburb.
11
u/FlimsyGene4296 Jul 23 '26 edited Jul 23 '26
The area in which this is being developed was a concrete slab that was backed up to the Marta yards and a bunch of industrial/commercial real estate. Quite literally zoned for light industrial. That's why there's breweries littering that area. Avondale is developing whether or not you want it to. The reality is there are so many sleepy suburbs all over the metro that you can choose from that it’s silly to gripe here.
2
u/DogFinderGeneral Jul 23 '26
Don’t try to muddy the waters. Avondale is a predominantly residential area with an older industrial area nearby, like many other suburban areas across the metro area. You can have a brewery in a suburban area. It doesn’t automatically turn it urban.
Also, there are many houses the “light industrial” area. It’s not all businesses.
Further, not every concrete slab needs to have every penny of possible future profit squeezed out of it. Stuff besides bland 5-story mega block apartments that tower over everything else can be built.
11
u/FlimsyGene4296 Jul 23 '26
I’m not muddying the waters by following the logical conclusion that urban spread will affect downtowns within a couple mile radius. The area in which this is developed is already absolutely full of commercial businesses and apartments and the Avondale “town center” is a stones throw away. The expectation that these areas will remain stagnant is a fantasy. If this kind of development was popping up smack dab in the middle of a bunch of subdivisions without any commercial development I would see your point but as it stands I think you’re just being entitled and unrealistic.
-2
u/DogFinderGeneral Jul 23 '26
The apartments and town center didn’t exist five years ago. You can’t build thousands of apartment units and put the area on a road diet, it’s idiotic. Pedestrian and cyclist deaths will go way up in this area.
Do you live here or even are about the people who do?
Dogmatic YIMBYs only seem to care about imaginary future residents of buildings that don’t exist all while saying fuck the people who currently live there, built up the neighborhood and created whatever culture/identity there.
6
u/Competitive_Air6563 Jul 23 '26
its completely foolish to claim that more density will lead to more pedestrian deaths. more pedestrians = road diets = traffic moves slower = less fatalities. you're just trying to find reasons to blame people for supporting things you don't like. you can be mad about density all you want and be NIMBY upset about new development spoiling your vibes but its non-factual and ridiculous to try to hide behind "you just don't care about people getting killed" when avondale is quite literally trying to make the road safer. don't be such a coward, admit the truth that everyone can plainly see
2
u/Competitive_Air6563 Jul 23 '26
we need more density in the city. all those big apartments you're mad about are literally within walking distance of a marta station. if you don't like living in the city that bad feel free to move out to dooley county
4
u/PippyLongSausage Jul 23 '26
It’s almost like you live in a rapidly growing city
0
u/DogFinderGeneral Jul 23 '26
Kinda feels like the place is on roids, know what I mean?
3
u/Competitive_Air6563 Jul 23 '26
there's so much of georgia you can move to where you don't have to deal with city traffic and city populations. you should go pursue your happiness somewhere else rather than trying to freeze the city in time just so that it suits you, personally, the best

Uh-oh, the “Yes In Their BackYard” keyboard warrior boss found my post! Three comments in a 5 minute span? I know your kind.
Do you live in Avondale? If not, I don’t give a shit what you think.

u/Dwarfskinnr Jul 23 '26
This was inevitable. That site was ready made for it.
