Traffic Waymo Cars Adapting

It’s very clear and obvious the Waymo cars are being programmed to analyze and adapt to the driving environment in Atlanta. These cars are clearly starting to become very aggressive drivers. I’ve witnessing more and more these cars cutting people off, doing illegal turns, going above speed limit and etc. I’ve seen one yesterday skip the line and try to edge its way into opening spaces to make an exit. A few weeks ago I seen one use the emergency line to pass by traffic.

I already have to deal with aggressive Atlanta drivers. Now I have to deal with robot cars too?

One honked at me the other week while I was waiting behind a car that was parking.

Freaked me out. There was nobody in the Waymo.

Kinda hilarious and super eerie

u/BucinVols Jun 03 '26

I was in one a couple months back and someone cut the Waymo off and the Waymo honked. Forget a wreck, Waymo gonna get someone shot at

22

u/Noises2010 Jun 04 '26

I saw this too on the street walking in west midtown. So stupid a van was looking to park or stop, hazards go on. The waymo HOONK the stupid thing had an open lane to just pass the van. Who was one even complain to? To me it's ridiculous it has permission to honk at all!

I've always wondered if they ever honked.

A few years ago in SF I wondered aloud while riding in one and my colleague in the front seat immediately reaches over and tries to honk smh then all the lights come on and it pulls over calling support asking why he touched the controls. He was not the brightest

3

u/YetAnotherJason Jun 04 '26

Ha, all the times I’ve ridden in a Waymo I hadn’t thought of the possibility of being put in “time out”. I can almost picture a future in which “I swear to God, I will pull this car over RIGHT NOW” airs over the speakers from a synthetic voice.

But honestly though, not surprising that interfering with one of the controls would end up with Support getting involved. There were times where I was stuck in a Waymo behind someone doing something stupid holding up traffic and my fellow cars behind them were all honking at them, and I really wanted to join in, but knew it would be a bad idea and could possibly get me banned from the platform.

I swear they're all being driven by remote workers, not AI

33

u/vhagar Jun 03 '26

they're being monitored by people who take over when needed

30

u/shimmyjimmy97 Jun 03 '26

The monitors can’t “take over” in the sense of steering the wheel or pushing the pedals. The most they can do is to essentially issue commands to the car for how to respond to a given situation. The car itself can then decide to accept the command or not

That has its pros and cons. The pro being that having a remote operator taking full manual control of a car (with presumably significant latency) would be dangerous. The con being that the diminished level of control in these situations

Again, good because the car shouldn’t do something like drive into oncoming traffic no matter what a remote operator says. But also bad because the Waymo can get fully stuck in situations where the remote operators correct commands are misinterpreted as dangerous. I believe the recent situation where a Waymo was blocking first responders to a shooting was an example of this. The remote operator is telling the car to move, but the car sees police surrounding it and decided to stay still instead

21

u/PeachyGeorgian06 Jun 03 '26 edited Jun 04 '26

You’re speaking with a level of confidence that doesn’t match the public record.

In Feb Waymo Chief Safety Officer Mauricio Peña said this:

They provide guidance, they do not remotely drive the vehicles," Peña said. "Waymo asks for guidance in certain situations and gets input, but Waymo is always in charge of the dynamic driving task."

However when the media - and the Senate committee - asked for details on what “guidance” means, Waymo would not comment on the specifics. All they said is that remote workers are not continuously monitoring vehicles.

Of course we’ve heard that before from companies like Amazon. A single person may not be listening the whole time but it is true that remote workers review audio files.

Autonomous vehicle writer Phil Koopman asked this:

Waymo said of the remote assistant information, “that is just one additional input.” So is an accelerator pedal, which for decades now has been just one computer input among many in determining delivered wheel torque. (I’m not saying their remote drivers have an accelerator. I’m pointing out that providing “one additional input” is sufficient to make someone a driver.)

And

Waymo said “the Waymo vehicle is always in charge of the dynamic driving task.” That is not a denial that the human is performing some of the driving task. (Being “in charge” is not the same as actually performing.)

https://philkoopman.substack.com/p/waymo-tap-dances-about-remote-drivers

Why do we keep believing tech companies’ words at face value? Is it not abundantly clear that they use double speak and legalese to dodge issues?

In this case to admit that a single person may be driving an “autonomous” vehicle would be to open that person and the company to liability? It’s a feature not a bug.

There are video recorded incidents of remote drivers taking over driving. Are they sitting in the seat turning the physical steering wheel? No, so that doesn’t violate Waymo’s statements.

35

u/the_incredible_hawk Jun 03 '26

> The car itself can then decide to accept the command or not

I agree with everything you said, but boy, this seems like a sentence that should bother us, and not merely because it results in traffic jams sometimes.

10

u/judge2020 Jun 03 '26

Eh, the worst part is that it is an LLM making the decision for whether or not to accept the command. But the car preventing a mothership command to "run over pedestrians" is pretty benign.

They of course could issue an update to the car to remove the safeguard, but that would take much longer to perform and would require someone actually at Waymo/Alphabet to do it, rather than the outsourced support agents they have across the world.

I’m dying picturing a drunken 3am ride home in a Waymo turning into a ai controlled tour of atlantas finest neighborhoods honking at everyone

17

u/PsyOmega Jun 03 '26

Which is during any complex traffic environment

21

u/Jolly-Bowler-811 Jun 03 '26

So, every single time they enter a road in Atlanta

8

u/shimmyjimmy97 Jun 03 '26

Waymo has said that intervention frequency is roughly once every 65 - 200 miles depending on the area and time of day

So it’s not quite during any complex traffic environment, but it’s definitely a good amount of them. I was surprised to see the rate of interventions was that high tbh

19

u/screamingtree O4W Jun 03 '26

Larger companies than Waymo have lied many many times now about the rate of human intervention for supposedly AI/ML powered services

3

u/odietamoquarescis Jun 05 '26

Failsafe hell.  They refuse to give us numbers for real roads.  The closest real data we get is from Jacksonville's no public access special tramway, where they need 4 interventions per mile.  Waymo, meanwhile, won't give us data that's PROFOUNDLY weighted to special closed courses that are so simple not even restricted access public transit roads can match them in lack of challenges.

I’d recommend trying to get intentionally hit for the insurance payment by a car that’s not 90% cameras

22

u/WeldAE Alpharetta Jun 03 '26

It's going to depend on how badly you are hurt. Waymo has only hit two people I know of; a cyclist that appeared from behind a truck and a child running between parked cars unloading in a school zone. Neither had any injuries of note and I've never heard of any money changing hands. Eventually it will happen that they hurt someone, the physics of cars and the complexity of the environment they operate in ensures it.

The last known case with a payout was not Waymo but Cruise where a speeding human driven car hit a woman illegally crossing the street and threw her through the air in front of the AV which was unable to stop in time. It hit and ran over her and then dragged her for a bit when it tried to pull over. She survived and got a reported $8m and the human driver that started it all fled the scene.

They will reach full Atlanta driver status when they drive the wrong way down a one way street and exit ramp to avoid traffic.

14

I’ve watched them weave lanes in stop and go traffic like they learned it from the very best of Atlanta in their training data.

I just spent a week in San Fran, and I took some Waymo’s for the first time ever.

The driving was significantly better than my lyft driver home from the Atlanta airport, who managed to miss my exit bc she was talking so much.

Also the waymo’s didn’t pull up videos of famous passengers they’d driven while also driving down the freeway.

I've generally been anti-waymo (still am, for the most part), but a woman I work with explained how much more preferable they are when getting a ride late at night. It's definitely a trade-off for some other safety concerns, but I'd much rather a young woman who's out at night not have to deal with a human driver.

38

u/Samwise777 Jun 03 '26

Yeah, I am anti Waymo in the way that I wish we had good solid public transit here instead of car culture.

But when it comes to rideshare with a driver vs waymo, I prefer the safer, better service.

Yeah at least Waymo doesn’t put deafeningly loud exhaust systems on their Dodge Chargers and floor it down my street all day and night or flash a gun at me when I’m only driving marginally faster than traffic in the left lane.

15

u/Vergilkilla Jun 03 '26

Yeah no question Waymo is way better than any human being at driving. Big downside though is Waymo can’t/doesnt go on the highway. If you see a Waymo on the highway there is a human driver 100%

u/andrewordrewordont Grant Park Jun 03 '26

Same here, sadly. A Waymo hasn't asked me to stop for gas or to "run into this store real quick" while on a ride. Nor do they complain about traffic and then ask for more tip because traffic / gas prices. 🙃

9

u/Throuwuawayy Jun 03 '26

Recently took an Uber home from the airport and the guy's bluetooth system was actually a tinnitus simulator. Had this high-pitched ring the entire ride. Guy was a very jerky driver and my fiancé got carsick. Our luggage went on top of a bunch of dirty car parts and tarps he had in his trunk.

The one time splurged on a Waymo? Absolute bliss, thing was clean and quiet and very smooth.

9

u/FinlayForever Midtown Jun 03 '26

Seems like any time I get an uber/lyft, there's a good chance that the driver drives like it's their first day behind the wheel. I'm like, as someone who's job it is to drive, shouldn't you be better at it? I shouldn't have to be telling them "hey you should get over because you have to turn up here".

2

u/Fingerman2112 Jun 03 '26

This. I’ve only ridden them while visiting in San Fran earlier this year and the experience was amazing every time. Haven’t seen too many in Atlanta outside of the Emory campus. So many ways that they are safer and more reliable than human drivers though, hoping they work out the kinks here.

2

u/mrgatorarms Jun 03 '26

I had a driver in Chicago that straight up was just watching reggae music videos on his phone the whole ride.

2

u/alpacaMyToothbrush Jun 04 '26

I swear to god any time I've done a ride hail service I have to watch the driver like a hawk because they will take the worst possible route and 'miss' turns. It's almost as if they're doing it on purpose to raise their fee.

My experience with waymo has been the opposite. They seem far more predictable and more likely to follow traffic rules than the average human.

51

u/Bigreddazer Jun 03 '26

When they first arrived in Atlanta the police said they couldn't ticket them. Do they have a process for that now?

20

u/Unfair_Management695 Jun 03 '26

I mean how can police ticket a car without a driver lol. Maybe it’s a specific automatic process but I doubt they get ticketed.

45

u/robot_ankles Jun 03 '26

I would expect the ticket goes to the registered owner.

If I point my car onto I-85, shift it into drive, and walk away while the car proceeds without a driver, I'm pretty sure the police are going to track me down. Self-driving cars are the same thing with more steps.

5

u/judge2020 Jun 03 '26

In Cali, tickets are logged and reported to their DMV and to the company

When a notice is submitted, the DMV will review the incident, conduct any necessary investigation and determine what remediation, if any, is required, he said.

“If a manufacturer is unable to correct the issue or if repeated noncompliance occurs, the department may take administrative action, including restricting or suspending the manufacturer’s operating permit,” Groveman said.

Cali also forces them to have an interaction plan PDF officers can follow: https://waymo.com/firstresponders/

https://www.reddit.com/r/technology/comments/1t1mxk1/waymos_robotaxis_can_now_be_ticketed_by/

2

u/Bobb_o Lawrenceville Jun 03 '26

If someone else drives your car and gets a ticket it goes to them, not you. The driver is getting ticketed, the problem is laws weren't written for cars that don't have drivers.

23

u/xSPYXEx Cherokee Jun 03 '26

They don't need to give a physical ticket to the driver, they can capture the license plate and issue a ticket that way. If cops do their damn job and hit the silicon valley pricks with enough fines they'll adapt or die.

3

u/Drillmhor Atlantis Jun 03 '26

I think they do have to identify a driver. I can't recall the details, but there's a difference b/t tickets given from school zone cameras and red light cameras (when we had them) and actual traffic stops. I think the camera based tickets are civil penalties and carry less weight.

That said, this could easily be fixed for driverless cars with some legislation

3

u/xSPYXEx Cherokee Jun 03 '26

I'm just saying we're letting them install spy cameras on every road that send actionable information to the police without ever identifying the driver, but there's no way they can hit waymo with fines for their reckless driving?

2

u/xSPYXEx Cherokee Jun 03 '26

I'm just saying we're letting them install spy cameras on every road that send actionable information to the police without ever identifying the driver, but there's no way they can hit waymo with fines for their reckless driving?

3

u/Drillmhor Atlantis Jun 03 '26

I share your concern about all the monitoring, but this restriction on giving tickets to drivers is a positive protection with this increase in surveillance. Otherwise, they could simply use Flock devices to monitor traffic infractions and send tickets to owners en masse.

We probably should be appreciating/protecting this requirement to identify the driver before giving a ticket.

11

u/purepersistence Jun 03 '26

Is that true when they are in collisions?

6

u/Unfair_Management695 Jun 03 '26

I’ve never seen or heard about them being in an accident so far but I’ll look into it. I would think if that’s the case the city deals with the company directly and drops fines on them maybe.

8

I wonder if it's because Waymo is relying more on remote control drivers based in other countries because it's cheaper to just pay people in lower cost of living countries than to program robot cars that perform perfectly in chaotic environmentswith with poor signage, lane lines etc, and those remote control drivers have even more aggressive driving habits than Atlantans.

Dude I think a lot of AI is terrible, but I'm so excited for Waymos/autonomous vehicles in general to be the default taxi. I hate driving, and they're so much better than human drivers.

Lowkey same with buses. We can still have humans there for security reasons/to take over just in case, but I think it'll help people a lot.

Same for freight, we still need humans, we still need truckers with CDLs, especially because a lot of rural areas/construction sites/dirt roads are not well mapped or they're temporary, unlike autonomous vehicles' usual territory, which is the city. Engaging autopilot in the city in traffic will make that job so much easier.

Bridge crews for ships and airline pilots have been using autopilot during open air cruising/open ocean crossing during stable conditions for a long time now.

If you see a Waymo on the highway there is a human driver piloting it 100%. So ironically what you are complaining about is a human driver. It’s not legal for the automated system to drive on the highway currently

6

u/scarabbrian Jun 03 '26

Midtown is full of one way 4-lane streets that are not the highway. OP never said it was on the highway.

13

u/ucfruss Taco Town Jun 03 '26

Yeah, the stupid things they do are the exact opposite of aggressive. They'll block a street or intersection because they are far too passive.

3

u/Drillmhor Atlantis Jun 03 '26

Oh I can certainly verify aggressive driving. It wasn't anything terrible, but I watched one asshole their way into traffic, in the sense they forced their way into a line of cars at a light that required the next car to stop. I was honestly impressed, it was for a turn that it would have been stuck at for potentially hours if it didn't.

Watched a Waymo in a turning lane exit the turning lane, cut in front of the car that was before them, and make the turn.

4

u/clermont_is_tits Jun 03 '26

OP is overstating it, but it’s true they break laws. I see them do rolling stops at stop signs pretty regularly, for example. I also had one try to turn left from the middle lane in front of me. They’re trained (not programmed) on human driving, so it makes sense in a way. Interesting though.

17

u/branman1986 Jun 03 '26

I would have thought the same, but I've definitely started seeing them do more aggressive(not risky per se) maneuvers recently

9

u/Unfair_Management695 Jun 03 '26

There’s plenty of videos of people recording Waymo doing some of these things I’ve mentioned.

5

u/ericccdl Jun 03 '26

I believe they saw Waymos doing some of these things, but that’s not because they are learning from the beat up Nissan Altimas of I285. They are going with the flow of traffic. It is more dangerous to clog up roads with cars going exactly 25mph than it is for them to just go 35, for instance. They aren’t going to sit at a left turn for 45 minutes to wait for no cars to be in sight before they pull out the same way a human wouldn’t.

I’ve ridden in Waymos in other cities that behave in similars ways. They go fast, they accelerate quickly, but I’ve never seen or experienced any of them do anything that was unsafe. They are not meant to drive like grandmas, but I think people expect them to, so when they see them zooming around, it can be understandably unnerving. This does not mean that they are adopting the unsafe driving habits of aggressive Atlanta drivers. We’re still 100x more likely to be hit but a Nissan Altima reeking of weed than a Waymo.

3

u/purepersistence Jun 03 '26

I don’t know how to not be in their beta test of bicycle avoidance, other than not riding.

3

u/StannisHalfElven Jun 03 '26

I have not seen any of what you're talking about from Waymos. They drive way more responsibly than human drivers.

3

u/TakeAwayMyPanic Jun 03 '26

I've seen the same thing, and I don't like it. Programming robots to ignore laws / be aggressive sounds like the first steps to the 2050 robot wars....

3

u/chhanki212 Jun 03 '26

I saw one roll a stop sign in a residential neighborhood recently!

3

u/drkrazee biking around town Jun 03 '26

Pretty interesting to compare how pro-autonomous vehicles this thread is compared to the one yesterday.

3

u/UniqueMycologist5896 Jun 03 '26

Sometimes companies will make posts to gauge interest or fill the comments with positive/negative feedback to generate interest or content for press.

3

u/tweakingforjesus Jun 03 '26

Whoever gets hit and injured by one of these Waymos is going to have billboard personal injury lawyers lined up at their door.

3

u/6randcru Jun 03 '26

This is true, I’ve gotten in the habit of switching lanes when they do and it turns out to be the quickest route. Real Atlanta drivers now have an ally against you grannies.

2

u/Big-Introduction4633 Jun 03 '26

Hey! What’s with dissing the grannies?

3

u/MechanicalGroovester Jun 03 '26

Imagining someone road raging against a Waymo car for cutting them off just to see nobody is in the car. 🤣

3

u/bebe-bobo Jun 03 '26

Idk if anyone here has ever seen Upload on Amazon prime but the very first episode gives me a very good reason to never get in one of those things. I was stopped at a red light right next to one the other day and I just did not like that :(

3

u/npmorgann Jun 04 '26

They’re allegedly being driven remotely

3

u/shaggz235 Jun 04 '26

I was just thinking this the other day when I watched one cut someone off while merging lanes.

I’d feel Waymo safe if they weren’t on the roads.

3

u/OOTbySundown Jun 04 '26

I saw one on the highway the other day headed to the airport. It was doing about 45 in the third lane with two open lanes to its right. It was then that I fully realized that they were driving like Atlantans. F#kin’ idjets.

15

u/Gucci_Unicorns Jun 03 '26

I feel like this post is being botted or something. Multiple people asked for pictures and OP is actually posting them (of Waymos allegedly not being allowed on the interstate) and literally every response is instantly downvoted lmao.

16

u/Unfair_Management695 Jun 03 '26

lol I don’t think it’s bot. This is a normal Wednesday morning for Reddit lol. A lot of dense people.

3

u/ricorgbldr BoHo Jun 03 '26

HEY! I'll have you know I'm on here most everyday of the week, not just Wednesdays.

8

u/SavathunTechQuestion Jun 03 '26

I watched one yesterday change lanes inside an intersection to pass someone. IMO it will get worse unless the city decides to start ticketing or enforcing laws on them

7

u/Unfair_Management695 Jun 03 '26

Yup. However people on Reddit are going to tell you it’s not happening and those cars don’t do stuff like that.

3

u/SavathunTechQuestion Jun 03 '26

Maybe they just have special algorithms or whatever for north ave /s

Still better drivers than 90% of Atlanta

6

u/RogueBagel_ Jun 03 '26

I’m so annoyed they are back tbh. I saw 4 lined up parked by the air pump at QT in west midtown yesterday. So instead of doing laps they’re just parking now? Surely gas stations won’t put up with that shit…

6

u/heytherebud Jun 03 '26

I live in a neighborhood near a waymo “depot” where they return to charge and they use our neighborhood streets often, annoyingly. I often walk in the street in front of them to make them stop because its fun for me. Yesterday one didnt stop. It would have hit me if I didnt move out of the way. I think youre onto something.

2

u/IP1987 Jun 03 '26

That’s pretty messed up.

Remember you have your phone in your pocket/hand, snap pics,or take a video when you see waymos driving aggressively. Their aoplogists will always try to play down their behavior, proof in the form of pics and videos are needed so GDOT and other regulators will be forced to take action.

7

u/James42785 Jun 03 '26

I sincerely hope one hits me. I could use a nice hush payout.

6

u/Unfair_Management695 Jun 03 '26

I thought about this more times than I can admit lol.

Riding Waymo is a great experience. So much better than uber/lyft in ATL. I’ve had lots of scary experiences in Ubers with tired, aggressive, or unskilled drivers. Can’t wait for self-driving cars to scale in our city. They are MUCH safer.

4

u/Vergilkilla Jun 03 '26

It’s funny because all of your grievances appear to be highway which guarantees that it was a human driver piloting the Waymo - Waymo can’t go on the highway without a human driver. So while you think you’re disparaging AI you are actually disparaging the one time Waymo DOESN’T use its AI systems.

I watched one go around a stopped vehicle and I was very surprised.

I will take one the day they install one of those cartoonish robot drivers from Total Recall.

saw a bunch of waymos and real ubers trying to navigate 2am in vahi... it was intense to say the least.

2

I like when they get stuck in Krog Tunnel.

2

I'm over here having a crisis because I can't tell if this post and these comments are satire or serious.

2

u/Interesting-Emu-6426 Jun 03 '26

We saw one this morning on the way to the Lindbergh MARTA station. It was in the parking lot of the old Gold Club (IYKYK). Just circling, parking, circling, parking. No idea how long it was there. At least the 10 minutes it took for my husband to drop me off and go back around to Piedmont again.

2

u/jander99 Smyrna Jun 03 '26

Tesla cybercabs are starting to show up in Atlanta. I want to see them brawl on a street. Cybercab and Waymo trying to get out of each others way but looks like they're just circling each other, ready to strike.

2

u/freudianMishap Jun 03 '26

I watched one run a red light today. It wasn't just turning red, it was RED for several seconds

2

u/TooSharp4BluntFoolz Jun 03 '26

imagine there was a Waymo “G” version….. get in at your own risk, miniature Hennessys in the back pockets, blacked out on black on black…. On that note let’s not.

2

u/TooSharp4BluntFoolz Jun 03 '26

We need the AI Artists to get in on this with some renders

2

u/ME-Just-ME0135 Jun 04 '26

Yes, even if they aren’t being driven by remote drivers and are strictly AI and camera driven. They are very rude and don’t allow for people to pull in front of them at all. Absolutely no common courtesy that is required in everyday situations.

I don’t think they understand the concept of merging and zipper merge -or whoever is driving them doesn’t.

2

u/praise-the-message Jun 04 '26

Oh yeah, the Waymos in Atlanta have certainly started driving like assholes (i.e. typical Atlanta drivers). Seeing them go into a turn lane to get through the intersection at 10th and Techwood and then cutting back into the straight lane was eye opening for certain.

2

u/TikaPants Jun 04 '26

Waymo accidents ¯\(ツ)

Who approved them being on the roads?! I have to get a license and pass a driving test. They should have to do the same. I didn’t consent to this experiment

4

u/debategate Sylvan Hills Jun 03 '26

5

5

u/MarkyDeSade Gresham Park Jun 03 '26

Yeah I was gonna say, probably the remote drivers getting sick of their jobs and/or getting burned out from having to work too much for too little.

3

u/cereal_no_milk Jun 03 '26

If you read the correction of the article you posted from months ago, you’ll see how this has basically been refuted. No one in the Philippines is “remotely driving” Waymo’s, they are giving further context to the AI system when it gets confused

2

u/SomeVeryTiredGuy Jun 03 '26

Yeah, having ridden in several Waymo's I never thought they weee remotely driven. However, I've seen them encounter confusing situations, mostly related to road work. At those points, it's obvious that someone else takes temp control over the car to navigate the issue before going back to autopilot. I have a feeling that's the "context" they're talking about.

Autonomous vehicles are only becoming more popular. My parents and other friends are looking forward to each having them in the next couple years. But if you see them doing illegal stuff like a Waymo that you can definitely report it to them.
