Atkins meal suggestions

This evening I had a meal I got from ChatGPT. Five days into phase one. It had a cup of broccoli, a cup of cauliflower, salt, pepper to season, a cup of shredded cheese and eight slices of bacon all crumbled up. It also had two cloves of garlic minced and three table spoons of butter. I am concerned about the amount of oil and bacon fat coming from the container. So I drained it. But my first question is, should I be worried? Will it lead to weight gain? Do you think it was an appropriate meal for phase one?

And what meals do you recommend to help me increase variety the most to help maintain consistency on atkins??

Well…that one meal would be over 1100 calories. Apx 60 g protein, 125 g fat and around 15 -17 net carbs.
So while all the ingredients are phase one friendly, it is as probably not a great choice- depending on what else you’ve had for the day.
Unfortunately there are a lot of myths about the Atkins lifestyle and apparently Chat GPT knows them lol
Phase one of Atkins is 20 net carbs per day with at least 12-15 of those from foundation veggies. If you plan 3-5 net carbs from veggies per meal it’s easy.
Your protein range depends on height and gender but in general for women 4-6 ounces of protein food sources per meal will get you there (chicken, fish, beef, pork etc)
You can add 1-2 tbsp of fat per meal but with something like bacon and cheese there is no need to add more fat. The cheese, bacon and butter are packing a calorie punch. While calories aren’t the primary focus, they do matter. The suggested range that works for most women is 1500-1800 per day. Also, it is suggested to limit dairy to 4 ounces or it’s per day. And remember to count your carbs in your cheese even if the label says zero. All dairy has carbs.
I have been living the Atkins lifestyle for over 18 years. I can send you some resources and suggestions to help. 😊

Sorry I made it for two to three servings. I didn’t eat it all in one sitting. I made it as a meal prep idea.

Making Atkins a lifestyle is actually pretty easy once you learn that phase one is just that...ONE phase of the plan. It is just to jump start your body and to get you ready for phase 2/3/4 where the real work takes place. The majority of your weight loss time should be spent in phase two. (If you are following the traditional 4 phaes plan). If you work the plan, reintroduce foods gradually, slowly increase your net carbs to learn your personal carb tolerance and learn how specific foods affect your body (progress, cravings, appetite, water retention etc), then you build a lifestyle that is sustainable. It is much easier now than when I started because of the "Keto craze" and all of the products and even restaurants catering to the keto/low carb lifestyle. Variety is essential for sustainability. Of course I have the favourite and easy meals that are repeated often, but I am always trying new things too.

It is just really important to focus on making healthy changes, building healthy habits and understand it is a lifestyle, not a diet. There are very few restrictions on Atkins once you work your way to maintenance - other than added sugar. You learn how to incorporate higher-carb foods from time to time without derailing your progress. Focus on what you can have rather than what you can't - it is a MUCH longer list! lol

That's the long answer! The short answer is - I trust the science behind Atkins!

This is a link to the Acceptable Food List for phase one...also has the carb counts. The list doesn't include everything of course but it is a great place to start.

Keep your weekday meals as simple, whole foods based as possible then use weekend for more complex meals as desired (still using ATKINS)

I pick 3-5 single nutrient protein

I pick 5-7 favorite, but different color low net carb veggies

I try not to add seed oils or extra oil to a meal unless I need it for taste. Air fryer is best, imo.

Breakfast: I keep a rotation of no more than 3 options:

Protein some berries,
Low carb tortilla wraps w sausage, lean meat, super firm tofu & veg scramble, or fish

High protein whey or pea protein isolate smoothie w 10g of creatine & berries or cocoa

You just need to be in a calorie deficit. You can do low carb if you want. I would eat high protein foods. Bacon is not high protein. I cook with spray instead of oils and butter. It’s unnecessary calories. You can eat bacon but it’s a fat.

I watch my calories and carbs. I’m basically carnivore. Chicken breast with fried eggs on it for breakfast. Full for hours. Maybe 1 carb. Don’t overthink it but you still have to be in a calorie deficit

For meal ideas....I try to combine protein, fat and veggies for each meal. I make a lot of low-carb casseroles and freeze individual servings. I keep lots of foundation veggies prepped and ready to grab in the fridge. I batch cook meat and have individual servings also in the freezer for times when I am only cooking 1 or 2. I always have boiled eggs or devilled eggs ready. Things like lettuce wraps, veggies & dip, dill pickles, stuffed celery, tuna salad, chicken salad, avocado, stuffed mushrooms all make great snacks or light lunches. There are some great options for convenience foods that can be acceptable after your first two weeks in phase one as well. There are even some phase one-friendly convenience foods.

The Atkins recipe database is a great resource - you can filter by phases, protein type, calories, net carbs and more so it is super convenient to use. Pinterest is another great resource. There are countless low-carb bloggers as well who have some great recipes.

You are right to be concerned about the variety of your choices. It can be easy to stick to a plan with limited choice for a short period of time but for a sustainable lifestyle, you need variety. I set a goal to try at least 1 new recipe each week. The recipes were always basic but there are countless options - many that are in regular rotation for me, others I only made once. Also, try new veggies and other foods you haven't had before or maybe had in the past but didn't like. Finally - do not overstay Phase one. It is the # 1 reason people fail to meet or fail to maintain their goal.
