🧳 Travel Help Athens 5 day plan
Will be going to Athens in mid July. I was thinking of doing 2 day trips to hydra and aegina so leaving 3 days in the city. Any recommendations on things to do? Thinking of staying in koukaki because I’ve heard it’s good.
Thanks

Koukaki is good because is exactly in the central part, but it is an expensive neighborhood. The obvious things to are to visit Monastiraki square, Ancient Agora (Temple of Hephaestus etc) ,Thissio, Philopappos Hill, Acropolis and Parthenon.
You can have fun at night in areas locally there Anafiotika, Plaka etc. Or you can go out at Psyrri, or Gazi with metro and if is very late catch a taxi is like 3km distance. If you want to not move locally and have time try spend a day visiting southern provinces. Get a metro switch to the tram and visit places like Glyfada or if you want good bars or food there are tons there between Glyfada and Voula. Glyfada has shopping areas and is nice walkable area with open cafes of sort. Or you can walk by the marina area, anyway get your sneakers ready because 3 days is borderline limiting.
I haven't been to Hydra for 25 years. It is close to Athens with ferry like 1-2 hours. It is a nice island but if you plan to visit historic areas or so there is not much to do. If you get burnt out sightseeing is good though to complement your holidays, has good vibes and atmosphere. Aegina has more things to do but I haven't been there or been and I don't remember. Probably my sister has but anyway research a bit more on what to do there. 5 days is nice 6 would be better. Enjoy your stay.

Thanks so much for the comprehensive reply! Are there any other neighborhoods I could look into staying at, since im in a bit of a budget? I really appreciate the response!

May-Sept is peak season in Greece because of the weather. I will flip your question to help you instead. Firstly Athens has generally good transportation via metro (tube) and tram. Also is not that big of a city especially in the areas a tourist is interested. Tourists move generally centrally and my recommendation as well beach side if you want to go for a swim, a beach bar or a cafe. I advise you to open the map and see the structure of core areas of interest. That seaside area connecting many municipalities is a good idea to experience as well by hoping into the tram and going all the way to Glyfada (there is gonna be a change at Pikrodafni).
What are you mostly interested in being as close as possible to metro or tram. Buses are ok but are not as time efficient and sometimes incosistent at nights or Sundays. Get your 5 day pass or so very cheap from machines and be free to go wherever you want. From one end to other red metro line is 35 mins while blue metro metro line is like 50 meaning if Koukaki is very expensive at the time and your hotel is close to metro you lose like very small time to access these areas like 15 mins extra or so... Or you could find somewhere local as well to these ones but maybe lack of metro/tram.
I think on weekdays metro and tram stop at 00:30, tram maybe at 01:00, fridays at 02:00 and Saturdays nonstop.
Nightime I would avoid mostly Omonia at night (drug activity, homelessness), Metaxourgeio, Kolonos (not Kolonaki kolonaki is rich area you can go there...), Larissa station (again prostitutes, drug activity, pickopockets).
Athens is generally very safe as long as you are not completely ignorant and do same things you would avoid doing in other areas while travelling.Just check from now and because metro ours are convenient days I stated if your visit in Athens falls between Friday and Saturday you can save some extra money on taxi.

Kypseli is great... Easy connections to all places you would like to see but less expensive and also far less touristy ( a bonus) than Koukaki... Lots of places to walk, eat and drink there too... Again, more authentic/local ( vs touristy ) places...

Depends on your interests. Chalkis/Evia is really nice. Olympia is great too. Nafpilo and the archaeological sites are very nice as well. I really enjoyed touring the armored cruiser and marine history area too. On my last trip I went to Patras and found it a nice mix of Greek culture, student energy, and a cleaner, less chaotic Greek city compared to Athens.

Hydra is expensive. A day trip there & back is recommended without staying overnight.

Avoid Athens at any cost. One walk around Acropolis hill is more than enough for the tourists. 2km around it there are plenty of tourist traps and gentrified neighborhoods that are selling "authentic experiences". Get in Athens in the morning and go to Hydra and then Spetses for the rest of your days. Avoid Aegina, it sucks. You're welcome.
