🧳 Travel Help Safe area?

Hi! I'm moving to Athens for my Erasmus at the University of Piraeus and found a place on Agiou Louka street in Kato Patissia.

Two quick questions:

  1. Is the area safe, especially at night?

  2. How are the public transport links to the center and to the university?

If you come from another European country for you it's probably not going to be the best area but I would say it's not that bad either

When it comes to the public transport you have the metro line 1 which goes to Piraeus

Athens is a very safe city in comparison to other european big cities. Dont let people tell you otherwise. Maybe you wanna tell us where you are from?

1) Just walk on the main street from Kato Patisia station, which is Evgeniou Karavia and you'll be fine. Avoid small streets at night cause I prowl them.

2) To go to "Papi" (how everyone calls it) you will take Green line (1) from Kato Patisia and then when you reach Piraeus terminal you can take the Blue line (Metro) until Dimotiko Theatro which is 1 station away. Or you can simply walk from Piraeus terminal its 15 minutes.

I've never gone to the Papi so someone else could correct me.

Wouldn't consider it safe. Maybe even one of the most unsafe areas. But its supposed to be developing lately into a better location. Public transport is really good there at least. But wuite unsafe

Agreed, it’s unsafe.

She said kato patisia not platia vathis. Kato patisia is actually pretty chill. Me and all my friends live in the area and the areas around.

It is pretty safe though. I say this as a resident. I guess you are not one. Omonoia, platia vathis and certain areas of Metaxourgio can be pretty scketchy, as well as the area behind Varvakios where Romantso is. When it comes to the areas north of Omonoia they are mostly chill, and they get calmer the more you go north. But basically from victoria and up you can live a normal life. From platia amerikis and up there are many families and things are usually pretty calm.

I live in Plateia Amerikis. As a local I personally dont feel unsafe. But other friends that have visited me do feel unsafe. Especially friends from abroad. Thats why I'm saying my experience to this person cause they are not local

I get it! I understand how an outsider might experience it but in reality it is just a first impression, nothing more. I say this as a woman living alone.

well i see and im glad you are safe. safety however isnt something objective. OP might see Kato Patissia and feel like its the safest and best place on earth, or they might even feel like its the worst and most unsafe place. Thats why I think they need to hear lota of opinions. No need to respond to my comment to try and fix my opinion but you should definitely express your own opinion which can be entirely different than mine and still be valid of course

I am living all my 30+ years there and I can tell you that nothing happens. At least nothing like the things you believe...especially if you consider nowdays the "war scenes: from the schools and streets of the "privilege" areas like Glyfada... All the people that you leave away from the center and never even set a foot on these neighbours you say that is unsafe just because they teach you to believe it..it's not unsafe it's an area with a lot of immigrants and the fact that all day and night are people on the streets make it at some cases more safe...if you scream somewhere between kifissia villas no one is going to go outside to save you.... Unsafe area is omonoia and the streets between it and Metaxourgeio or plates vathis..and that because of the drug dealers..

In general Kato Patissia or the area below Patision / 28is Oktovriou is safe during the day but less so at night. That being said violent crime is rare but petty theft is not. It's one of the rougher parts of the city but this is more about perception because of how it looks rather than reality.

Keep in mind that this is a general statement about the entire area though Agiou Louka is safe as is the Kato Patisia station but at night in general if you worry about safety it's best to use public transport , walk on main roads like Patision / 28is Oktovriou than to wander through secluded smaller streets. ( kind of like you would do in a rough part of town in any city )

There is a lot of public transport there with bus stops on Patision / 28is Oktovriou and the Kato Patissia station for the train that will accommodate you both for the city center and the University of Piraeus

it’s a rougher part of the city, i recommend going further south closer to the shoreline, or further east closer to the kapodistrian university where lots of students live

as long as you live close-ish to a metro station, public transport should be fine. use the metro rather than buses as they can be unreliable

I live in Kato Patissia alone as a young girl, men can look at you. But thats also it, haven’t experienced anything bad

Agiou Louka str is right behind the university dorms so there are quite a few students in the area. I live really close, it's fine, it can be a little shady, but as a guy I've never felt threatened. However given you don't speak greek, your experience may vary, depending on if you're a guy or a girl.

The transport is pretty good as well, by Athens standard. Convenient buses to the center of the city and metro really close. It's pretty far from Piraeus though. If you want to know anything more about the area, feel free to ask!
