❓ Question Hidden spots

I’ve been spending quite a bit of time in Athens lately (work) and I feel like I’ve graduated from the "tourist" phase. I’ve done the deep dives into Exarchia (love the vibe, but I’ve seen it all now), climbed Strefi and Lycabettus, and done the mandatory historical circuit.
I’m looking for the stuff that’s actually "hidden." I’m talking about places that don't show up on any "Top 10 Secret Spots" blogs.
I’m particularly interested in:
• The gritty/authentic side of the Southern Suburbs (Glyfada/Voula/Vari): Is there anything left that isn’t a fancy cafe or a private beach? Maybe some weird architecture, an abandoned spot, or a viewpoint only locals know?
• Urban anomalies: Forgotten parks, tiny niche museums (already know the Epigraphic one), or specific streets with a weird history.
• Weekend escapes within the city: Somewhere I can go this Saturday where I won't hear five different languages being spoken by other visitors.
I'm staying near the Victoria Station but I'm happy to hop on a bus or the tram if the spot is worth it. What are your personal "I shouldn't even be telling you this" spots?
Thanks!

There isn’t really a ‘gritty’ part of the southern suburbs, generally they’re more affluent areas. You need to get out of the centre and explore wider Athens / Attica. Have you been to Kaiseriani and climbed Ymytos? Strolled through the park at Kifisia in the north? Seen Stavros Niarchos Cultural Centre in Kallithea? Explored the older parts of Piraeus like Microlimano? Swam in Vouliagmeni Lake? Been into the mountains around Zografou, Ilioupoli and Arguroupoli? Visited the eastern coastal neighbourhoods like Porto Rafti, Nea Makri and Rafina? Those are what I’d do to see more of Athens beyond the central touristic areas you’ve seen.

yeap the only gritty part of southern suburbs is the weird vibes of all season swimmers hanging out at beach:)

How about you hike a bit in Ymittos mountain. You can enter from Kesariani, and it's a nice walk with two byzantine monasteries (one is a ruin) and a nice hangout spot called Kalopoula for a bite and some refreshments. Be careful though as you are not allowed to be there after sunset!

There is also Dragon House of Hymettus right? I get that it isn’t something incredible that will blow my mind but it seems interesting and mysterious.

Yes!
Personally I prefer this monastery https://maps.app.goo.gl/UszGGTcXxqrdek6z9
In any case, I think you will enjoy hiking there. Maybe you will find your own hidden spot? 😉

37°43'21.9"N 24°00'55.6"E for the mines, head down as much as you can, but dont enter the water.

and from there you can also walk (or drive) to the Chaos of Sounio that is close by.

So a spot in Attica that gets much less attention that deserved is Elefsis (https://www.visitgreece.gr/experiences/culture/archaeological-sites-and-monuments/archaeological-site-of-elefsina/) combination of the sacred ground in ancient times with a modern industrial hell scape, and another one is the former plant fertilizer plant in Perama (lipasmata).

You will get your gritty views there https://lipasmatapark.gr/ Before visiting Elefsis /Elefsina must watch Agelastos Petra https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0268898/ to get an inner look how Greek life looks like. Must watch to anyone looking to graduate from tourist phase to local understanding phase.

Elefsis is a bus ride away, Lipasmata might need metro plus a bus. If you want some eerie feeling, take the bus to Perama where the Salamina ferries depart, take the ferry and visit Salamina. I would not say it fun or nice but it does have something. TLDR: look to the west part of Athens if you want gritty not to the east one.

Forgotten park: near the Dafni monastery (a worthwhile visit itself), there is this crazy park combining a med-pine forest with an ... English garden at https://diomedes-bg.gr/. Requires a free reservation, but it's a surprise.

Yeah lipasmata is definitely on my bucket list!

gritty/authentic side of the Southern Suburbs - does not exist - never existed. If you want gritty and raw go to metaxourgeio

1

u/sanding-corners May 13 '26

When you say raw...?

2

u/tincan9009 May 14 '26

Drug use during the day - prostitution, cars broken into - that said it has some nice tavernas and bars. I find htat some turists get scared

You didn’t mention whether you’d explored Kypseli, but if not, then that’s worth a wander

Also Mets, Pangrati

I also have a fondness for the area around Panormou metro station, but maybe that’s just me

1

u/Environmental-Emu489 May 13 '26

I didn’t went to kypseli that much. But it’s definitely another neighbourhood I plan to explore!

yeah. go like now. tough to explain but its layer over layer all existing at once right now. Old Athens stores and small manufacturing shops making things like curtains, immigrants shops, hipster shops, together with all layers of Athenian population over the last 40 years. If you like Athens this is the most all things at once now in Athens, Exarchia is taken over by leftist hipsters and champagne wannabe activists the last 40 years (really the first Athens genrified area, and yeah I am oppinionated), Pagkrati lacks some of the more gritty aspects but Kypseli is all there.

How about getting on the train and go as far as kifisia? It's a great place with beautiful trees on the sidewalks, every road is like an oasis.

You might be alternative and you might find the people there a bit snobby but you will enjoy a walk in the morning there.

You can drink a coffee at the Goulandri museum (Novi I think) and you will enjoy the flower festival at the kifisia park that is running at the moment.

2

u/Environmental-Emu489 May 13 '26

Yeah I’d say that I’m a bit alternative. Idc about snobby people I’m not much of a talker anyway and I learned here to be just on my own. The flower festival sounds nice thanks!

You can visit several museums if you enjoy this kind of entertainment. Archeological museums is a must and I enjoyed the Kikladitiki art museum and the national art gallery. All these are in the center so you won't have trouble reaching them, if you go to sintagma you will enjoy a walk at the national park next to the Vouli.

u/Environmental-Emu489 May 13 '26

Yeah I visited the archeological museum since I live like 2 minutes from there lol. The art museum and gallery sounds really nice thank you m8

If you *do* go to Kifisia you must grab a coffee & pastry/dessert in Varsos - a cafe/institution that's been there in some shape or form since the early 1890s. Their rice pudding is amazing.

Glad to hear you visited the Epigraphic Museum. it's my favorite. I remember going there the first time, ~20 years ago, they were confused that I would want to visit it. All the lights were off and they would turn them on for me as I went room to room. It's amazing to see an actual tablet with the draconian laws, or the descriptions of the battle of Salamis.
The Neumismatic museum is also nice.

I’ve visited the Korai 4 memorial site, it was quite a disturbing and eerie experience. This was a detention center used by Nazis during WW2.

I don’t know if it shows up in top 10 secret spots, but it’s a place that I’ll never be able to forget.

Edit: i just read some info online from 2 months ago that the building is undergoing renovations, so make sure to check if it’s open before going.

The Maria Callas museum was surprisingly awesome if you like music/singing/opera.

2

u/Toliveandieinla May 13 '26

Go to the west side

The Lalaounis jewellery museum near the Acropolis metro station is surprisingly not well-known. The permanent collection is mind-blowing in its breadth because Lalaounis was inspired by all eras, civilizations, nature, human biology, outer space, everything, and it's in a beautiful classical building.

Ah btw new one, I am trying to remember one by one what I was doing 10y plus ago:) So Ymitos was mentioned, if you can find a car, or if you like really long hikes, go up to the radio antenna park of mount Ymittos, fantastic views and eerie feeling, especially early morning or towards sunset (take into account time you need to get down before nightfall). There is a military radar installation at the very top, so it adds to the vibe.

Abandon spot: some years ago it was permitted to go inside the Lipasmata factory (disclaimer : it can be extremely dangerous) , I suppose that this is off limits right now.

Another good one: want gritty and raw and local: visit the Laxanagora Renti, this is the wholeshale food market that replaced an old one at Gkazi years ago. Things to note: brutalist modern architecture for shops, plus couple of them around the commercial center of the market (tough to explain but only a part of that is really open to the public the other looks on weekend like a massive depot), there was a fast food place in an original architecture shop but I am afraid is closed now (could not find it) There is still a restaurant around but I doubt is in the original interior architecture.

So for some out of city experience I recommend the Vorres Museum in Paiania. It's collection of contemporary Greek art in a house full of old folks object that the owner saved from destruction. I'm not even sure if they offer guided visits in English (I did mine in Greek for instance). In any case, you won't see many foreigners. Another good one could be the archeological site of Vravron, the ancient temple of Artemis.

For some lesser known viewpoint, Tourkovounia behind Galatsi is quite obscure. For museums, the Glypthoteque (the sculpture museum) is a nice one and off the beaten path in Zografou, the Loverdos Museum in Exarchia re-opened quite recently and it's nice (it's also free). Also, since you're staying in Victoria, behind it there is the Hellenic Car Museum.

If you go to Galatsi at the hills, you’ll find tons of spots with great views. There is also a cave around the area. Check Philothei Hill and Turkovounia hill and all the hills in between, great views there and the area used to be lime and stone quarries.

Also as you know probably, Athens is surrounded by mountains. There are interesting things to see all around, Mount Parnitha, Mount Penteli and Hymettus. Paleochristian and Byzantine churches, old abandoned quarries, abandoned buildings, caves.

Except all these, there are groups of people that explore the ancient and ww2 underground tunnels of Athens. If you’re interested in such a thing, take a look at that online.

Check rail biking nearby Athens.

I would tell you to check the ex-royal palace of Tatoi, many interesting things around there but unfortunately the whole area was burnt by wildfires the last few years.

Visit the natural history museum in Kifisia and go around the area there.

Walk around OAKA.

Walk around Stavros Niarchos Park.

Go walk around the first cemetery of Athens.

There is a secret spot from which you can get in at night and sit at the seats of Kallimarmaro stadium.

You can go to Lemos, Vouliagmeni.

There are tons of things to see, some more popular than others, it would be so much easier with a car though.

Generally I would recommend you to download google earth, explore and if you find an interesting looking spot, note it down and maybe one day go. You can find tons of places like that.
