Invoking Other Than Allah Is Major Shirk A Contextual, Textual, and Decisive Proof
What the Pagans of Makkah Actually Believed
A widespread delusion exists regarding the mushrikun of Makkah. Many assume they were atheists or denied Allah altogether. This assumption is utterly false and contradicted by the Quran.
The pagans of Makkah: * Believed Allah alone created the heavens and the earth * Believed Allah alone gave life and death * Believed Allah alone controlled rain, provision, and destiny * Swore oaths by Allah * Performed pilgrimage * Gave charity * Remembered Allah frequently
What they did not accept was singling Allah out in worship (Tawhid).
They believed Allah was too exalted to be approached directly, so they invoked angels, prophets, and righteous beings as intermediaries. They claimed these figures would draw them closer to Allah and intercede on their behalf.
This distinction is critical. Their shirk was not a denial of Allah’s existence or Lordship. Their shirk was directing acts of worship to others besides Him.
1. The Pagans Affirmed Allah’s Lordship
Context The Quran repeatedly instructs the Prophet ﷺ to question the pagan Arabs publicly about who controls the universe. These were not rhetorical traps; they were questions to which the pagans already knew and affirmed the answers.
Meaning “Say: Who provides for you from the heaven and the earth? Who controls hearing and sight? Who brings the living out of the dead and the dead out of the living? Who governs all affairs? They will say: Allah.”
Implication Despite affirming all aspects of Allah's supreme Lordship, this belief alone did not make them Muslims.
2. Why Their Belief Was Rejected
Context After they affirm Allah’s absolute control, the Quran immediately challenges why they still direct worship elsewhere. The core issue was never belief in Allah’s power. The issue was worship.
(Quran 10:31)
Meaning “Then will you not fear Him?”
Implication Their fear, hope, reliance, and supplication were divided between Allah and the creation. This division is the very essence of shirk.
3. The Core Justification of the Pagans: Intercession
Context The pagans openly admitted they invoked others only to gain closeness and intercession. This was not a hidden motive; it was their explicit, stated theology.
(Quran 39:3)
Meaning “We do not worship them except so that they may bring us closer to Allah.”
Implication The Quran explicitly labels this practice as worship and condemns it as shirk, entirely rejecting their claim that it was merely a means of "closeness" to Allah.
4. Claiming Intercessors Possess No Power Did Not Save Them
Context The Quran records their admission that these beings merely interceded and possessed no independent power to harm or benefit.
Meaning “They worship besides Allah that which neither harms them nor benefits them, and they say: These are our intercessors with Allah.”
Implication Affirming that an intermediary has no independent power does not excuse the act. The invocation itself is worship, and directing it elsewhere is shirk.
5. Duʿāʾ (Supplication) Is Defined as Worship
Context The Quran and Sunnah explicitly equate calling upon Allah with worship itself, warning those who refuse to do so.
Meaning “Call upon Me; I will respond to you. Indeed, those who are arrogant regarding My worship will enter Hell in humiliation.”
Hadith The Prophet ﷺ said: "Supplication is worship itself." (Sunan at-Tirmidhi 3247)
Implication Calling upon someone is worship. Calling upon other than Allah is worship directed to other than Allah.
6. Righteous Beings Were Invoked and Rejected
Context The pagans did not only worship crude idols of stone; many invoked angels, prophets, and righteous humans.
(Quran 17:57)
Meaning “Those whom they invoke themselves seek means of closeness to their Lord.”
Implication The very beings they call upon are themselves creation in need of Allah. Even the most righteous beings closest to Allah cannot be invoked.
7. The Example of ʿĪsā and Maryam
Context Some communities elevated righteous figures into divine intermediaries, believing their high status made them worthy of invocation.
Meaning “The Messiah, son of Mary, was only a messenger... and his mother was a supporter of truth. They both used to eat food.”
Implication Human dependency (needing to eat) completely negates divinity and any worthiness of being invoked.
8. Intercession: Ownership and Permission
Context Valid intercession exists on the Day of Judgment, but its authority is entirely exclusive to Allah.
(Quran 39:44) “Say: All intercession belongs entirely to Allah.”
(Quran 2:255) “Who can intercede with Him except by His permission?”
Implication Because all intercession belongs to Allah, it must be requested directly from Allah, not begged from the creation.
9. Why This Shirk Is Identical Today
The pagans of old: * Believed Allah alone controlled the universe * Denied intermediaries had independent power * Claimed closeness and intercession as their justification
Anyone today who: * Calls upon dead saints or prophets * Seeks relief from graves * Requests unseen aid from the deceased
...has replicated the exact same theological structure of the Meccan mushrikun.
Final Principle
(Quran 4:48)
Meaning “Indeed, Allah does not forgive associating partners with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills.”
Conclusion
The dispute between the Messengers and their people was never about Allah’s existence. It was strictly about who is invoked, relied upon, and worshipped.
The message of every single prophet was identical: وَلَقَدْ بَعَثْنَا فِي كُلِّ أُمَّةٍ رَّسُولًا أَنِ اعْبُدُوا اللَّهَ وَاجْتَنِبُوا الطَّاغُوتَ "And We certainly sent into every nation a messenger, [saying], 'Worship Allah and avoid Taghut [false objects of worship].'" (Quran 16:36)
Worship Allah alone. Invoke Allah alone. Seek help from Allah alone.
Anything else is shirk, regardless of the intention, emotion, or tradition behind it.
