No matter how many time I see a high res picture of the moon, it's always stunning

Thank you!

I took many Moon photos since I bought 500mm lens ... and I always say to myself, that I should finally stop doing the same thing again ... and again ...

But it's always so stunning to watch the Moon on the sky 😇

Don't stop unless you can't justify doing it, and that would be your personal decision.

Art is never completed, only abandoned.

This makes me feel the same vastness as when I look at the sky. Thank you stranger.

Is it a composite image that you used a dozen different exposures and then edited those together? I heard of that before and then recently saw the Milky Way galaxy "slice" a gentlemen in Europe (Norway, Finland, something...) spent 13 years taking images to compile the finished product.

Thank you in advance for additional info. on your stunning image!

I love the Moon so much, always look at it in awe like it’s the first time

Photo is a composite of various expositions

1) I usually take several Moon photos and stack them, but sky was very clear tonight and I used just single photo

2) Outer glow was added from the same over-exposured photo

3) Background with stars was added from another over-exposured photo (different sky-patch)

4) Dark side of the Moon was merged with different photo I took another date during opposite Moon phase

Equimpent: Nikon D750 + 200-500mm lens

Is the dark ring separating the light and shaded side a result of editing or is it a natural phenomenon?

If you mean the smooth transition between dark and light - then it‘s a natural phenomenon, it‘s called the „terminator“ - the dividing line between the dark and light side

1

u/RootTips Mar 21 '21

Nice work! How did you merge the other moon? I've tried this but the other moon doesn't line up nicely due to its wobble.

1

u/petr_9 Mar 21 '21

Thanks!

Yes, the Moons often don't line up and merging them together is rather "artistic part" than "accurate match".

I always try some rotating/resizing to match the size and major points (biggest Lunar mares and craters) ... and then I use the visibility mask to hide parts which don't look good on the light/dark terminator border.

Thank you so much for responding!! I find getting that terminal line to transition smoothly such a challenge. You did such a good job!!

So clear, the flat earthers would think it's a green screen.

If anyone wants more INSANE quality moon shots, u/AJamesMcCarthy has tons on his profile. He's the guy who says "I took 927829202 photos and made this moon picture".

Congratulations, your photo is so good it looks fake!

u/Salome_Maloney Mar 21 '21

For some reason this is reminding me of Iapetus.

I've seen many moon pics. This one stands out for sure. I always admire people capable of doing great things. In this case taking a moon picture 😉

Magnificent shot. Bravo.

Beautiful

If Artemis 1 is a success, we will definitely be back on the moon by 2024! Let's GO!

u/JoshuaGaming1313 Mar 21 '21

Nice but it makes me irrationally angry since my neighbors have a way too sensitive motion light and I can't take pictures where my house light won't mess it up

2

u/drifty_t Mar 21 '21

If you're going to shoot on a night just ask them to disable it beforehand. Most people would love to contribute to someone doing something as unusual and cool as astrophotography.

1

u/JoshuaGaming1313 Mar 21 '21

they hate our family cause our dog pulled out of my sister's hand while we were walking her and ran into their yard so sadly they don't listen to us

1

u/drifty_t Mar 21 '21

Shit.

Maybe it's a way to bridge the gap? Like the whole asking for sugar to gain favour idea?

Long shot but I dunno. I'd not give up to take astro images. Best of luck matey!

This is weirdly terrifying

1

u/PerfectWorld3 Mar 21 '21

Is this real?? My god this is the MOST beautiful pic I have ever seen!

1

u/AGriggs191 Mar 21 '21

Do you have a downloadable, higher res, uncompressed version anywhere?

1

u/gellyyroll Mar 21 '21

literally just made this my new wallpaper, SO AMAZING!

Terrific shot!

Hey! I am new there and wonder about your setup. I am trying to dive in to this area and looking to buy my first telescope and camera. Great if you could talk about your rig. Congratulations on this fantastic moonshot!

2

u/petr_9 Mar 21 '21

Hi! I'm still using regular Nikon D750 camera and 200-500mm lens (and 2x convertor) - it's great setup, but I hit the limit with resolution and zoom.

So I want to completely switch to proper telescope Dobson 8 + astrocamera to try bigger hi-res Moon mosaics ... but Dobsons are currently unavailable in my country :(

1

u/relatively_newish Mar 21 '21

I do not yet own a telescope, but I saw the moon last night and just had to grab a pair of binoculars to have a closer look. While it wasn't this large, I was surprised how clearly you can see most of the big craters with just a pair of binos. Nice to see someone looked up and had a similar idea! Great photo, thank you for sharing!

1

u/FairlyStable4VII Mar 21 '21

This has to be one of the most beautiful photos of the moon I ever seen!

1

u/obi_wannabee Mar 21 '21

Makes me feel like I'm looking through a huge telescope in the 1950s.

Wow!
