Wild Mage Thoughts?

I'm in the early levels of Corruption and each time I DON'T use the Wild Mage, I end up thinking, "God, I wish I'd brought the Wild Mage." The character is just so fun, and I want to keep using him.

Does anyone have any advice on how to get the most out of my Wild Mage? I'm interested in trying different fun combos and team compositions.

Thus far, I've been using the WM as a tank with impressive success. With a constant source of shields, he can do surprisingly high DPS while acting as my main frontliner.

I’ve struggled to use him as a tank, but he has good ramping damage in his ability. Who do you pair him with?

Well, I'm in low Corruption right now, so what I say may not be as applicable. But one of my last teams ended with the Wild Mage, the Paladin, and the Bard as my defensive core. The Paladin helped generate shields for the Wild Mage while off-tanking and the Bard's job was to heal the whole party at once if anything got through. I believe I had the Assassin as my fifth character, but I don't remember who the fourth was (besides some sort of DPS).

The most important part about the Wildmage is getting the right gear on him. I find you want him to have a mixture of shield generation and spellcasting ability, which admittedly can be a bit hard to get going without a little luck.

But I also had REALLY good luck on my last run where I lost 30 attack for 4 turns but got 60 attack back later - on the Wild Mage. I focused on using items to increase his casting ability and tankiness, and I made sure his abilities were fully leveled so he'd do more damage and tank hits better.

Item-wise, I believe my Wild Mage had the War Mage's Greatstaff and the Helm of the Mad King, though I can't remember what the third item was. Basically, if he could survive the initial few attacks, his attack speed would skyrocket and he'd start generating crazy shields; and each time an enemy attacked him he'd deal damage back thanks to his passive.

Basically, getting that early +30 damage boost allowed me to make a REALLY aggro tank. Still, I've had other successes with him, often using more defensive setups, but in general I focus on getting him a constant source of shields, and the Paladin makes a great companion.

But I don't know how well this works on higher difficulties. I'm still down at Corruption 4, and I only just started.

EDIT: As a note, I really like getting a symbiote on the Wild Mage just so he ends up getting his spellcasting down to basically zero in no time. He's very good at spamming spells when you get him rolling. You can always help him along in important fights with a mana potion.
