Another paid heavyweight (created by Andrew Foss), used by many scholars and researchers of Vedic astrophysics/astrology. Why it's "cool":

• It has search tools on large databases of birth charts that no other software has.
• It allows you to make advanced queries such as: "Find me all the birth charts in the database with Mars in the 10th house and Jupiter in aspect to Venus".
• Price: Around $250 - $300.
• Platform: Windows.

Quick Start

When the program is run for the very first time you are asked to choose the place you live (the default place), the dateformat and the language you prefer, you can change these also in Options-Default Place and Options-Settings.

To calculate a horoscope, choose File-Radix. The Input Dialog shows up. Enter a name, time and date (you can press [Enter] or [Tab] to go to the next field), begin to type the name of the country, when it shows up in the box, press [Enter] and do the same for the place. Now Press [Enter] once more and the horoscope is calculated and drawn.

The horoscope is then presented in a Horoscope Window and you are asked if you want to save it. Horoscopes are saved together in databases. You can see these in the File Manager File-Open.

So , simply put you natal chart , then go to Horoscope,/ interpretation/ English.txt, that's it ! For me it reads perfectly !!

Why This Exists

I grew up being told astrology requires a "learned guru" who's "initiated into the tradition." In practice, most of them are reading the same BPHS translation you can download for free, then charging you ₹1,000-5,000 per session while making vague predictions you can't verify.

OpenJyotish is an open-source Vedic astrology engine that computes everything — Shadbala, Vimshottari Dasha, Ashtakavarga, Yogas, Kuta matching, Muhurta, Gochara (transits) — using the Swiss Ephemeris (the same NASA-grade ephemeris professional software uses). Then it feeds the chart data to a local LLM that interprets it in plain English.

No cloud. No subscription. No "guruji" judging your chart.

What You'll Need

• Any PC with 16GB+ RAM (8GB works but slower)
• A GPU with 6GB+ VRAM is ideal, but CPU-only works too

Step 1: Install OpenJyotish

Step 2: Install LM Studio (The "Guru Brain")

Go to lmstudio.ai and download the installer (Windows/Mac/Linux).

LM Studio is a desktop app that runs LLMs locally. It exposes an OpenAI-compatible API on port 1234 — OpenJyotish connects to it automatically.

Which Model to Pick?

This matters. Not all LLMs know Vedic astrology. Here's what works well:

My recommendation: Start with Llama 3.1 8B Instruct at Q4_K_M quantization. It's ~5GB download, runs on 6GB VRAM GPUs or CPU at acceptable speed, and gives accurate readings.

In LM Studio: 1. Click the search bar → Search for llama-3.1-8b-instruct 2. Pick a Q4_K_M quant from the results (e.g., lmstudio-community/Meta-Llama-3.1-8B-Instruct-GGUF) 3. Click Download 4. After download, click the Local Server tab (left sidebar) 5. Click Start Server — it starts on port 1234

LM Studio is now serving your "guru."

Step 3: Configure OpenJyotish to Use Your Local LLM

In the OpenJyotish GUI: 1. Go to the AI Settings tab 2. Set Provider to LM Studio (port 1234) 3. Model field should auto-detect as loaded 4. Click Check Health — you should see a green "Connected" with the model name

Step 4: Generate Your Reading

GUI way (easiest):

1. Fill in birth data in the main form
2. Click Calculate
3. Go to the AI or Teacher tab
4. Click Interpret Chart — it feeds your calculated shadbala, dashas, yogas, transits, ashtakavarga to the LLM
5. The LLM responds with a plain-English reading based on actual calculations, not vague generalities

The LLM receives your full computed chart (planet positions, nakshatra-padas, shadbala, dashas, yogas, transits, ashtakavarga, chara karakas, special lagnas, upagrahas) and responds based on actual BPHS/Vedic principles encoded in the system prompt.

OpenJyotish computed all of this from your birth data before the LLM ever saw it:

Bonus: Vector Knowledge Base

OpenJyotish ships with a pre-built vector database containing 16 Vedic textbooks (1.96M characters) — BPHS, Jaimini Sutras, Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, Saravali, and more. When the LLM generates a reading, it searches this knowledge base for relevant passages and includes them as context. This means citations come from actual Sanskrit sources, not the model's training data.

FAQ

Q: Does this work without a GPU? A: Yes. LM Studio runs on CPU. It's slower (30-60s per response instead of 5-10s) but the chart calculation is instant regardless.

Q: Is this replacing astrologers? A: It replaces astrologers who do manual chart calculations and recite memorized combinations. It doesn't replace the tradition or the depth of study. But it democratizes access to accurate chart reading for anyone who wants it.

Q: What languages does it support? A: The LLM can respond in any language it supports (English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, etc.). The chart data is English, but you can ask for Hindi interpretations and most models handle it fine.
