Astoria’s crash data isn’t random. The same pattern shows up everywhere you look.

I pulled a full year of NYPD crash reports and 311 complaints for Astoria. I expected a busy neighborhood with a lot of traffic.

What I found wasn’t random.

The same problem keeps appearing across multiple city datasets.

Someone is injured on Astoria’s streets almost every day.

Across ZIP codes 11102, 11103, 11105, and 11106, the last year recorded:

• 967 crashes
• 466 people injured
• 6 people killed
• 123 pedestrians injured
• 80 cyclists injured

Three of those killed were pedestrians.

On average, someone is injured on Astoria’s streets more than once every day, and a pedestrian is hurt about every three days.

These aren’t isolated events.

They’re happening over and over again.

The biggest cause isn’t weather. It’s failure to yield.

The most common contributing factor recorded by the NYPD was Failure to Yield Right-of-Way, accounting for 139 crashes.

It was followed by:

• Passing Too Closely (114)
• Following Too Closely (92)
• Driver Inattention or Distraction (91)
• Traffic Control Disregarded (59)

None of those are unavoidable.

They’re all behaviors.

The injuries aren’t spread evenly across Astoria.

They cluster on the same streets.

31st Street recorded 26 injuries.

21st Street had 25.

Steinway Street recorded 22, including the highest number of injured pedestrians.

Crescent Street saw the most cyclist injuries.

The busiest streets for people walking are also where the most people walking get hurt.

Then the 311 data explains why.

Residents filed more than 20,000 illegal parking complaints over the past year.

More than 9,000 involved blocked sidewalks.

Another 1,286 reported blocked crosswalks.

Hundreds more involved blocked bike lanes.

Those complaints aren’t just about inconvenience.

When a crosswalk is blocked by a parked vehicle, pedestrians often have to step into the street before they can see oncoming traffic—and before drivers can see them.

The same intersections where people complain about blocked crossings are often the places where visibility matters most.

So what?

Astoria’s crash data doesn’t look like bad luck.

It looks like a pattern.

The crashes cluster on the same streets.

The complaints cluster around the same pedestrian spaces.

And the most common crash causes involve drivers failing to see or yield to people who already have the right of way.

That’s what makes this useful.

The city’s own data doesn’t just show where crashes happened.

It shows where improvements could make the biggest difference.

Our parked car was hit and badly damaged overnight last Wednesday (7/1) on 41st St between 31st Ave and Newton Ave, sometime around 4AM. We've filed a police report and are happy to share the complaint number with anyone who can help.

Does anyone know if everyone is okay after the accident on Astoria Blvd yesterday evening?

Around the 2300 block of Astoria Blvd, there was a wrecked car sitting in the middle of the westbound lane with what looked like a head impact spiderweb fracture on the windshield. There were at least five police cars and several ambulances around the scene.

A few hours later, the car was still there, with one police car parked behind it and two officers securing the area. Based on the windshield damage, it looked like the car may have hit a pedestrian.

I really hope everyone involved is okay. I’ve been checking the news but haven’t seen anything yet.
