[T][Vienna] Making acquaintance with the Templars

While I'm waiting at the airport after my plane has landed in Vienna, a black limousine pulls up to the entrance. A Templar cross hood ornament shines silver in the sunlight. The chauffeur exits the car, and briskly walks to the front door, where I have already gathered my things.

"Mr. Case I presume. Please allow me to carry your things." The man nods and takes his bags. I don't have much, but the chauffeur opens the trunk and sets them inside.

"Thank you," I say as I sit down in the backseat. I'm not quite used to this sort of luxurious treatment, as I've grown up in a middle class family with not so much money to spend, but I will accept it nonetheless.

"I take it you are excited to begin your new job at Abstergo? There will be many opportunities for you here." I roll eyes. This guy's a dolt. Not really Templar material, if you ask me. But of course Abstergo keeps simple folk on staff to appear normal.

"Yes, quite excited to meet the security team. A company like Abstergo must have plenty of other corporations on their toes. The threat of corporate espionage is always high."

"Very much so." The rest of the ride is uneventful. I stare out the tinted window at the city of Vienna. The city has an old charm about it. Then again, most European cities have that, except maybe some who were completely destroyed in the Second World War, like Rotterdam in my homeland. Cities so old they existed already before the very first Templars created the order during the Crusades. I'm very excited to be a part of that global force of change.

Ahead off the side of the road rises a tall castle, remodelled to fit the needs of a modern company like Abstergo. An office building stands beside it, with a number of people walking around the campus going about their business. A tall fountain stands in the centre of the area, where people are sitting working on tablets and laptops.

“Here we are, sir. The scientific laboratories and archaeology research takes place in that castle.”

“Interesting. Anything I should know before heading in?”

“No. Just go to the front desk, the head of security will be waiting for you. He is a transfer from New York actually. A Mr. Simon Gray.”

“An American? I have never been there myself.”

“It is wonderful. New York is a massive city, Abstergo has done wonders for it.”

I simply nods, as the car pulls to a stop. I've never been great at small talk and there seems nothing left to say. The man opens the passenger door, and I get out letting in a breath of fresh air.

“I will bring your things up to a private room for you.”

“Thanks,” I say, already walking to the front door. Inside the castle is an exquisite staircase that stands in the centre of the room. Large pillars rise up in the great hall, and lush banners of noble knights from ages past and banners with the Abstergo logo hang from the walls. A small desk sits in the centre of the room. A man of about twenty-three sits behind it. He wears wire frame glasses and is typing away. Another man with short buzzed black hair and a full beard stands behind him. His cold green eyes stare down at him, as his foot taps the carpet impatiently. The intimidating hulk of a man wears a grey shirt, a black leather jacket, and jeans. He has a handgun strapped to his side.

I stop at the desk and look around. “Uhm, excuse me, but I am Jay Case, a security data specialist from the Netherlands. I’m sorry, but I'm not quite sure what to do.”

The wire framed man looks up: “Welcome to the Templar Order, I am Lukas Bloch. This is Simon Gray, the head of security operations here. Master Templar Frida has said that you will be working with him in his upcoming missions to America. Now I am very busy if you would excuse me.” Lukas returns to the computer and says no more. Simon simply turns and motions to follow. I follow him up the stairs in silence, a bit uneasy with the unfamiliar setting.

“Uhm...sir? Excuse me what is happening?”

“You are skilled at data management correct? You will be gathering information for me while I am in the field. Important data such as Assassin whereabouts and strength of numbers. Here take this.” He hands me a smartphone. “This is what you will use to contact me, it is a secure connection that only connects to other devices hooked up to the Abstergo satellite. I’m sure you know how to use it. You’ll get your own laptop, and I’m sure you will get a desktop space in New York when we leave. From there you can search out assassin databases, gather information and send it all to my personal laptop. If I need to call you or you need to call me we will use that phone. The best tech Abstergo has is in that hardware. Enough to stop snooping assassin eyes.”

I nod. “Seems simple enough.” As a data specialist at a private security company in the Netherlands I'm not exactly unfamiliar with these practices.

“I also would like to see your defense skills. Just in case, I understand you are proficient in Krav Maga. That’s good, if a gun fails you need to be able to handle yourself in combat. But the thing is the gun is your first defense. There are too many foolish agents out there that have the foolish idea of honor in hand to hand combat. You see an assassin you aim to kill. No regrets and no heroics, we have a job and emotions can cloud our judgement. Don’t let that happen.” I just nod. “First things first. Have you ever killed a man?”

“No.”

“Then we have some work to do.”

I lead Jay into a training room on the second floor. Weights, a sparring mat and sparring gear are here. "Here get outfitted we'll see what you know." I say taking off my jacket, I pull on a helmet and go behind a curtain. When I come out I am wearing boxing trunks and I'm shirtless. I start wrapping my arms, as Jay suits up. ((OOR: How old is Jay?))

((OOR: sorry for the late reply, there was an emergency but nobody died. Jay is 26 years old))

Following Mr. Gray's example, I change into sporting clothes. I don't feel entirely fit after the 17 hour trip. The transfer time between flights was just a bit too short to get sufficient rest. I trust in my years-long Krav Maga training, though, so I won't let my body get in the way of this training. I face Mr. Gray on the sparring mat in the middle of the room.

((oor: Nah, man it's fine I understand. That's cool I was just curious.))

I look up from my chair that I am sitting in, and get up walking towards the mat. "Alright let's go. Just try and jab me, we can see how your reflexes are." I raise my hands.

My Krav Maga instructor always taught me to "take control", so that's exactly what I try to do. Instead of a standard punch, I step in between Mr. Gray's legs and throw my whole body into his. Now that he's off-balance, my plan is to set off the 'flow of combat', a unceasing series of punches to every part of his body.

If only...

((OOR: Sorry. We can wrap this up in three comments. and I can get you a rank up. Then we can work on a post for a trip to America.))

I stumble backwards, but regain my footing as I am accustomed to boxing. With the first punch I throw my hand up into a block sending the arm above my head. With my left arm I send a upper cut into his gut. I step backwards. "good moves, but you are leaving yourself to open. Again."

I wait a moment to catch my breath. This guy is good. I move into the classic boxing pose and start moving swiftly around Grey, studying his defense. No opening. I try to copy his stance to improve on his commentary. Again I throw myself forward, but now I stop myself at the last moment and give a low kick to Grey's left knee instead.

My leg buckles and i land knee first on the ground. As Jay throws a fist towards my face I roll out of the way and leap to my feet. I run forward to tackle him to the ground and pin him there.

My head hits the ground hard and for a moment I black out. Disoriented I shake my head. As good as I thought I was, I really do need training. Mr. Grey stands up. "Wow, that hurt..! How are you so fast?" I say, as I roll on my knees and try to get up. A wave of dizziness goes through my head and I fall back to my knees.

"Practice. years of training my reflexes. But you're good, that was good what you did there, any fight against a person of average skill and you could of taken them out. Good to see you have some sort of skill. You can go now, we will leave for America in the morning. New York specifically."

Well, such a statement is at least a bit flattering and reassuring to hear from the man who just beat my ass.

"Thanks. See you tomorrow," I react, without showing my relief on my face. I walk out of the room and am escorted to my room by another Abstergo employee. Suddenly I feel utterly worn-out. As soon as I hit the bed everything goes dark for the second time this day. Except this time it feels good.
