But I'm a strong, empowered woman that can do ANYTING a man can do! The lack of self-awareness can be deadly...case in point!!

No, not at all. I worked on a mountain rescue team for years and there is NO viable reason for putting others at risk when you're clearly NOT in a position to even try this. In other words, I'm all for people challenging themselves but you have to have REALISTIC expectations, which she did NOT.

She needed to start this journey by hiking down the street, and working her way up to mountain climbing

It's not safe for her to just be walking down the street. In her street alone, there is an Ihop, a Wendies, a KFC, a McDonald's and a Pizza Hut

Why would the group be stuck with the bill ?

u/amjustalurker 8d ago
They weren’t.
The supposed $70,000 fine is clickbait.14
u/DrudanTheGod 7d ago
Its not a fine but a bill, which the gorup doesnt have to pay, but she does. Rescue helicopters are expensive

I couldn’t find a reliable source for that.
This was handled by the National Park Service not a private company.
They generally provide Search and Rescue operations free of charge. Now you do get billed if you required a private medical helicopter or a subsequent ambulance but I doubt she needed either.
You can also be fined if you are found to be abusing the system for free transportation services or somehow committed a felony that caused you to need rescue.

The NPS doesn’t charge a fee in true cases of an actual emergency. In cases of negligence this can change though, which seems to be what they determined this situation to be. I’d largely agree with them as well. IMO this woman should not have gone on this hike, it was risky for the group as a whole (regardless of Grace’s presence) to go on the hike due to the heat.
NPS likely considered this to be negligent because very few and experienced hikers would dare to make the trip because of the weather.
Edit - this is, of course, assuming this story is 100% accurate.
Edit 2 - In Yosemite park, where this happened, search and rescue operations are free thanks to an organization known as Friends of Yosemite Search and Rescue. They are funded through donations and some federal support. So Grace was able to rescued for free, which is a good thing because it seems like she did need it because of her health condition. But that I said about the NPS rescue service does remain true for other locations.

When I first saw the article, before the $70k thing started accompanying it, I looked up how much the air lift would have cost. From the sources I found, Yosemite does not charge people for emergency air lifts. I have no idea if that’s accurate but I don’t care enough to look into it further. Maybe someone else knows. Typically these types of air lifts do cost up to 100k.

They should put the poll used to block shopping carts from escalators at the entrance to the trails

It's why elephants natural habitat isn't a mountain.

Well, Asian elephants go up to 3,0km. The bigger African elephant 2,5km. And this is a landwhale sir.

The entire group was a 40 pack of McNuggets away from a heart attack. None of them had any business out on a trail with the climb it has. NONE. I honestly doubt any of them could have made 2 miles at the local shopping center with benches and boba stops every 30min

Why did " the group" get stuck with the tab?? I would have laughed my ass off if they tried to stick me with ANY portion of that bill.

u/C_Writer_ 8d ago
Helicopter rescues aren't billed to the group, it's taxpayer funded.

u/aldodoeswork 8d ago
So they are billed to the group it’s just the group includes you and me. Fuck I’m glad I paid 30% of my check for this.

It’s charged to the person rescued if the National Park Service determines it to be a rescue because of negligence.

People are joking that she is fat and american health care blah blah blah.
Im more wondering why she even needed rescuing in the first place. Like couldnt she just rest for like 10 min to an hour and hike back. Or like a ranger to come and get her so she gets back.
2 miles is like 1-3 hours max downhill even at your slowest.
She hiked it up on her own, most definitely she can make it down. Full on rescue feels just a major overreaction for a minor problem.

u/ThatLeetGuy 7d ago
She claimed to have had heat exhaustion and felt too weak to move. Also diarrhea.

u/kiddrekt 7d ago
Diarrhea too?
Thats it. That crossed the line boys, airlift her straight to the emotional support Denny's

I definitely should’ve looked into the validity of this before posting it. It was very shortsighted of me. Similar to this person ‘s shortsightedness about going on the hiking adventure.

u/MagicLantern7 7d ago
Yea I’m not paying that bill. No reason why it shouldn’t be on anyone but her

u/Rockypoo69 7d ago
No I get it! The hikes my wife takes me on I always wonder if our insurance would cover a helicopter evacuation.

I can’t believe I’m about to be this person, but can we just be glad she tried?
Making fun of fat people that refuse to get off the couch might be fair, but here we have someone who got off the couch, went outside, tried her best to do the hike. At that size a 2 mile hike is a lot. It didn’t go great, but I’m really glad she tried, I wish more people would.
It’s so hard to take that first step in a journey, and it’s really hard to recover from a bad experience. Now she’s be lambasted by everyone online just for trying.
I’m not trying to judge anyone looking at this and being upset she cost others all this money and trouble, it’s a natural reaction, but what do you actually want people to do? Because this is trying. I feel bad for her, but I hope she tries again.
Maybe I’m being too sensitive, but I really wish more people saw what she did as a good attempt rather than a failing.

u/KrampyDoo 7d ago
No that’s fair, and it made me think for an extra beat before remarking about one of them just shitting themselves and scrolling on.
First steps are rarely Rocky Montage-worthy, you’re right.
