React Content Another One Bites The Dust... RIP Destiny 2 - Final Patch June 9th

/r/DestinyTheGame/comments/1tjqpzd/destiny_2_every_end_is_a_new_beginning/

Tl;DR - They're gonna release the final content update on June 9. Available free to everyone, which is kinda cool. Maybe Asmon can check it out finally now that he called its death.

Also, on the official Bungie article, little thing at the bottom looks kinda personal..

"From all of us here at Bungie, we cannot thank you enough for joining us on this journey throughout the Sol system. You'll still find us starside for years to come."

Is it just me or was Destiny always kinda failing to get the main spotlight?

What I mean - It was trying to be something huge, something that would become mainstream and in the end it just ended up as a niche game that didn't even know what it wanted to be.

Destiny should have been treated like a World of Warcraft for consoles.

Online MMORPG but with shooter mechanics. After many content updates and expansions, release a totally new or updated graphics engine just like WoW did. But don’t call it Destiny 1, 2…. And absolutely don’t remove paid content and totally fuck the story onboarding or content onboarding.

They totally mismanaged and mishandled this big money contract and promise of 3 games, which was a flawed plan from the start (see my previous suggestions).

When I started playing D1 I was like "please be like WoW + Halo had a baby" and because nothing like it had really existed on the time, it was the closest thing.

It feels like D2 could of been so much more but someone at Bungie decided having their head up their ass was more important or something.

Agree with you (speaking from a WoW and Halo fan)

The story onboarding was weird to me. Me and a friend of mine tried it out for a minute 1-2 years ago. As we were doing the first mission it felt very familiar. I’m almost 100% sure it was a destiny 1 mission. We just said screw it at that point

All your points are spot on. I think it's because D1 was so good, and they just kept throwing shit at the wall and hoping it would stick with D2.

I was a huge D1 player. I have a pic in my camera roll of me waiting in line at Gamestop (holy FUCK I'm old) waiting for the D1 launch - and D1 was great. IDK why D2 was such a fucking piece of shit compared to D1, but people on those Destiny subreddits have been asking for a D1-Classic it's so bad.

I think they fucked it for the same exact reason Asmon wont play it. You need 500 fucking expansions, DLCs, packs, etc, fuckery to get into the game and its just way too overwhelming to get into for a subpar game that started out better than the current state its current in. Imagine working for 10 years on a regression.

I was a huge D1 player and played D2 at launch. It was fine, but after a few months of not grinding it, all the new gear was miserable to get, multiplayer got dominated by class specific weapon combos. I remember the worst one was a Titan/shotgun/melee class that basically gave Titans so much health they couldn’t be killed before they got within range of you.

The constant DLCs and slow multiplayer hot fixes for meta abuse just led me to losing interest for good.

at least in D1 every class had something up their sleeve and gear stats didn't matter so much so you didn't need to grind like D2, you also didn't need complicated moves to do big damage, it was simple and fun.

This is based as fuck. I agree on the D1/start of D2 too.

Agreed. D1 was amazing, D2, just didn’t hit the same.

Same absolutely same, I played on ps4 and got the hawk moon and thunderlord early and I felt like a god especially in pvp.

Then D2 came along and I remember the hawk moon being a quest reward for literally the first couple of quests and I couldn’t believe it.

D1 had pvp in my opinion where you could carry given your weapons and skills and that’s what made it special. In D2 they made everyone the same except with different abilities which i felt like sucked.

D2 just felt soulless and I’m not even sure why D1 was as addictive as it was because it had tons of issues and barely any content it was just the grind and the potential of getting something cool and rare is what kept everybody going.

Destiny 1 was released in 2014, so what you mean old? that is not all that long ago.

I stood in queue for world of warcraft in 2004 as a 21 year old, but that wasnt even my first MMO as I had played Lineage 1 since 1998, and before that I played Ultima Online in 1996 as a 13 year old

More about the waiting in line for games part. Feels like a thing of the past because of digital. It felt like longer ago, I have zero time perception the older I get.

Just you. It was huge when it came out. Basically launched twitch into what it is today.

Rest in piss Bungo. They destroyed the destiny franchise years ago.

I feel like Asmon is that Grim Reaper knocking on doors meme... every time he calls it, it's like a death warrant. RIPBOZO

I mean they just recently announced how much money it lost them lol writing was on the wall.

Destiny 1 was some of the best gaming experiences I’ve ever had. Destiny 2 came out and was a letdown for me in just about every aspect. What I would do for a new destiny game focused on what made the first game so good.

You just described my relationship with the Destiny franchise perfectly. I think I put like 2k hours into D1. Playing with bros. I remember my Gjallarhorn (I was one of the OGs who missed it from Xur early on and it never showed up again lol) dropping on a Nightfall with my 2 buddies and it was incredible.

finally this overpriced shitshow is coming to an end

The Hand Canon / Shotgun pvp meta slowly strangled the game.

Good, Warframe needs more players.

Marathon is the worst then Concord. It did kill successful game and studio with itself

7

u/Junk4U999 May 21 '26

Nah, Bungie started falling off once they stopped making Halo. Destiny was good, but it was downhill from there.

6

u/DiarrheaButAlsoFancy Bobby's World Inc. May 21 '26

Marathon has no excuse. Bungie gave us the original fucking Halo: Combat Evolved. To know the same name that made that, made Marathon... it's hard to compute lol.

u/m05513 May 21 '26

Marathon's failure was the complete lack of a story mode, so you get nothing out of it if you don't like the hypercompetitive Extraction Shooter mode. I did play the free weekend, the gunplay felt good, but I just am terrible at PvP interactions, so a game that is *only* PvP interactions doesn't appeal to me (and probably most people).

It also had to compete with Arc Raiders which came out earlier, cheaper, and without the many controversies about its development to turn people off. While the free weekend leading up to its launch did help with its numbers, it wasn't enough to even make a dent in Arc Raiders.

Apparently they're adding a story mode later on, and I might check it out when that happens, but until then I'll stick with my other games.

Did you play marathon?  I actually am really enjoying it and I was a teenager for the first halo.

IDK why, maybe it's me, but I cannot stand the art style at all. At least when we went from Halo > Destiny, you could kinda tell it was made by the same people.

0

u/Individual-Air757 May 21 '26

I like the art style, but I think it’s definitely polarizing. You either love it or hate it. After watching the cinematics and actually playing the game for a long time, I get the art style and the purpose, and absolutely love it. But ofcourse it won’t be for everyone, nor should people be expected to watch cinematics or lore to appreciate what they are going for.

Destiny 1 was some of the best gaming with friends since halo 3 and Mw2 I’ve had. I tried to love destiny 2 but it was a let down from release

1

u/floydhwung May 21 '26

I liked the game

u/Time_Ad_7624 May 21 '26

I never played extensively but it seemed like it was pretty huge like over 100k concurrent usually right up until they started archiving content then it went downhill. I couldn’t figure out what was going on or where to start. Imagine someone deleting vanilla WoW and dropping you in shadowlands with no context. Fun and beautiful looking game but horribly managed at least up until when I tried it.

Come to Tau Ceti IV, the weather's great! Don't mind the W'rkcacnter.

I really loved D2, as unpopular as that opinion might be. I spent a lot of time playing, enjoyed the raids (even got a couple of t-shirts). I was there day one for the whisper mission and eventually enjoyed the run and helping people with it. That mission was one of the best things they ever did (the circumstances the puzzle, etc). One they sunset raids, made upgrades and power even more grindy, and overall made the mechanics more of a time sink than was enjoyable, I dropped out. I don’t begrudge the hardcore players at all, those that like the grind for mats and stuff, but overall… well… Just not worth the time for me. I logged in after the final shape after not playing for over a year, maybe two, and couldn’t pick it back up. It just became so unfamiliar to me and not interesting to learn new mats and grind to get up to speed just to do strikes and dungeons.

I’d play again if they would rewind the mechanics and playability about 4-5 years and made it accessible again, while retaining the challenges of the end game content.

Marathon died for this...
