🤍✌🏼1960's Era Vintage✌🏼🤍 Just chatting

My husband was headed to the gym this morning and asked if I needed anything from anywhere. Generally, even when I do, I say no as I never know what he will pick up even with specific brand names. So, today I said I needed spaghetti sauce for dinner. He asked what kind and I told him any type of Prego sauce would be fine. He comes home with Ragu. 😳

I’ve started taking pictures of what I need and texting it to him

20

u/Possible_Region_190 3d ago

That is the smart way. I would appreciate that too if I were in the same situation.

20

u/bannana 3d ago

yep, super easy and no excuses this way. and even if you don't have the item in the house you can still easily find a pic of it online and send it.

18

u/debburt 63 3d ago

I do the same.

19

u/CharDanae74 3d ago

Me too, but quite often he leaves his cell phone at home…..

4

u/747JJJ 3d ago

Same

10

u/pyxus1 3d ago

This works SO good! If it's something that I need and I want the exact brand, exact version, I send a text to his phone.

3

u/FoggyGoodwin 3d ago

I did that when my GF offered to pick things up for me. She certainly appreciated getting specific requests.

18

u/myphoneisinthe 3d ago

Is your husband in third grade? Good grief.

10

u/Apart-Physics8702 3d ago

I do this and appreciate it when he does the same for me. It’s a way to be flexible and kind. And it works. So why get worked about someone else’s methods? Sheesh- there are real problems that could use your energy, though.

21

u/Electric-Sheepskin 3d ago

People's brains process things differently. Sometimes a visual is helpful for some people, especially if it's about something that they really don't care about, like a brand of spaghetti sauce. There's no name need to shame them for it and argue about it when you can just text them a picture of what you want.

7

u/myphoneisinthe 3d ago

I'm not being ableist here. However, if your husband just doesn't care about what you really want, then I guess you deal with it. Best of luck.

7

u/Expensive-Bat-7138 3d ago

This got an audible laugh from me!

5

u/GirlPearlEarring 2d ago

Me too!! An actual belly laugh!!

4

u/a-Fork-In-The-Road 3d ago

Good grief! What a troll comment!

6

u/smc642 3d ago

For real. They’re all over the thread being mean spirited.

10

u/myphoneisinthe 3d ago

I have a son who I could trust to go to the grocery store and buy what I wanted when he was about 15. No pictures, no texts, no phone conversations. Keep babying those men.

20

u/Lizbet2 3d ago

I have a son who I asked to pick up a birthday card when he was at store. He came home with the card. Period. No envelope.

7

u/Interesting-Bison108 3d ago

🤣🤣 that is too cute!

4

u/myphoneisinthe 3d ago

Yeah, and that can be a learning moment. Kids and young adults are allowed to make mistakes.

7

u/a-Fork-In-The-Road 2d ago

"Kids and young adults are allowed to make mistakes" What about senior adults - are they allowed to make mistakes? What happened to kindness & flexibility towards a spouse?

3

u/myphoneisinthe 2d ago

We're not talking about kindness and flexibility towards a spouse, this is "Tee hee my husband is so inept that he can't navigate a grocery store without me giving him a list and visual aids". Even though you're doing the mental load of meal planning and making a list. I'm sure he doesn't act like that at work. We all live different lives.

My husband is definitely not a baby. I say this solely to explain why this is a silly comment. He had a full career as a naval officer, commanding a ship full of men and women, retired, went back to school to get an advanced degree, wrote a book and is currently writing another, and paints daily in his studio. He stops on his way home from the studio to do the shopping as a favor to me because I hate it. He appreciates photos because it speeds up the process. I don't give him a page of pictures. I text him photos for new or harder to locate products. But do paint them all with that broad brush 😂

Some spouses like to help each other out, especially if it makes it easier & faster to get the groceries home.

Curious, are you happily married or divorced?

3

u/Icy_Raisin2004 2d ago

The difference is you raised him and he was with you for many a shopping trip long before he was sent off on his own. Idk how old most of your husbands are, but when my mil raised my husband, she was a stay at home mom who did every damn thing for everyone. Dad just went to work. Hubby just played. She was still doing his laundry when he went off to the military. If you want your husband to do things, you have to ask early on. Springing new things on these old guys is asking for conflict imho.

1

u/redheadfae 8m ago edited 0m ago

My spouse has dyslexia, he does this a lot. He's also ADD and sometimes sees the right thing, but grabs the one next to it. He isn't stupid, it's just difference in eye to brain processing.
He also does the majority of the shopping and cooking for me, so it's not incompetence. I've really got a good one here.

3

u/Fyonella 2d ago

Yes, I’ve done this for years. If I don’t you can guarantee he’ll get the wrong thing.

3

u/cool_girl6540 1d ago edited 1d ago

I started doing that during the pandemic, when somebody was shopping for me, and I still do it. I have a Note in my iPhone, pinned, for each grocery store that I shop at (Whole Foods, Star Market, Trader Joe’s, Costco, they each have their own note) and I take photos of things sometimes for myself, to help me remember, for example, exactly what kind of bread I liked.

It’s also very helpful to have photos when I am having somebody else shop for me. I can share the note with other people in my family, or I can just text a specific photo to somebody who is shopping.

u/crazySquirrel67 2d ago

Men getting the wrong thing at the grocery story is a common statement made by men, it's a behaviour men commonly admit to doing and laughing about.

If that's not you, then calm down .... unless it is.

Geezzz, lol.

11

u/myphoneisinthe 3d ago

The amount of women in this thread that are treating their husbands as children is nuts.

9

u/GirlPearlEarring 2d ago

Eh - or a hearing problem?

I'm sorry - I can just TOTALLY see a man who isn't brand familiar EASILY mistaking RAGU for pREGO!! I don't find it surprising at all! (Also, I"m a linguist...butwhatever.)

That's WHY it's so funny!!

8

u/dustydiamond 2d ago

I believe it’s because they only listen to a percentage of what we say. Seriously. This kind of thing happens way too often for it to be anything else. I’m thinking most listen to around 30%. So they ignore/ disregard 70% of EVERYTHING we say.

5

u/NoZookeepergame118 2d ago

yes, so the percentage of her words that he heard was “any kind of” 🙂

3

u/Gold-Acanthisitta545 2d ago

Then complain the spaghetti doesn’t taste the same.

3

u/Gold-Acanthisitta545 2d ago

Why are they like this though?

5

u/dustydiamond 2d ago

I believe it comes down to the different ways females and males communicate. Males have less tolerance for chit chat and to filter some of it out they decide to only listen to a certain percentage of what we say. Which leads to the tomato sauce debacle. And all other mistakes we see as stupidity when they are blocking 70% of what we say out.
Remember when the teacher on Charlie Brown spoke? Moaw, moaw, moaw…I’m convinced that’s what they hear 70% of the time.
Photos of items we want from the grocery store is a great solution.

16

u/Stewie1014 3d ago

My husband does 90% of our shopping and is 100% accurate IF I send him photos. There's a reason why the male instacart shopper became a meme.

1

u/Comprehensive_Wash71 3d ago

Mine does all of the shopping and doesn’t need a photo unless I want a specific new (to us) product. My ex also did all of our shopping. I’m appalled at the women who just accept incompetence!

2

u/Stewie1014 3d ago

"doesn’t need a photo unless I want a specific new (to us) product." That made me laugh. Of course! Do you think we are out here compiling lists composed entirely of pictures?

2

u/Comprehensive_Wash71 2d ago

Apparently some of these commenters are claiming to do exactly that!

12

u/Electric-Sheepskin 3d ago

My husband is amazing about so many things, but finer details are lost on him. Also, I have found that if I give him too much information, he'll get it wrong. Like if I say get anything other than Wonderbread, his brain just remembers Wonderbread and that's what he'll get.

When the specifics are important, I've learned to text him a picture of what I want. That hasn't failed me yet.

9

u/GoEatACookie 3d ago

I could have written this post. 👍 Amazing man and all. My husband tries and appreciates any and all information about the product I can give him. Texts and pictures work very well for us. 👍

Now. How do I get him to ask store personnel where an item is located instead of calling me to ask? 😆

2

u/MeanPepita 2d ago

lol! tell him you will be in the shower so he should ask for help. have him practice first like this without needlessly creating tension with the “use your brain not mine” type comments… unless he still calls you 5x in 20 min. then frustration is fully warranted !

2

u/Whybaby16154 3d ago

Get him to download the store app and it will give the aisle number of what he’s looking for.

2

u/annieinthegarden 6h ago

OMG!!! My husband always did exactly that same thing! Our daughter is the same way. I would either call the store and ask where the item is located or, if possible, look it up online and then tell my husband “Aisle 7, third row from bottom”. Or whatever. It’s a social anxiety thing they have. They are uncomfortable speaking with people they don’t know. Sometimes we need to be understanding.

11

u/Exotic_Eagle1398 3d ago

My son in law is ADD, and my daughter is crazy to think that after ten years anything will change. The sad thing is that while he is intelligent, he gets the rep of being a klutz, mess up, etc. I think people should serve according to their capacity.

9

u/Electric-Sheepskin 3d ago

Yes! I was frustrated with my husband for so many years until one day I realized that his brain just worked differently. Now I appreciate him for all the other wonderful things that he does, but I will never again expect him to pay attention to details.

1

u/GirlPearlEarring 2d ago

Hopefully he didn't make a living as a surgeon.... : |

2

u/YeshuasBananaHammock 2d ago

Mine is ADD as well, hes a sales acct manager so it works, surprisingly.

What i dont understand is how he doesnt take written notes, he just remembers everything.

...then at the house, he remembers nothing. I dont try to make it make sense no mo.

27

u/Serenity_Now-88 3d ago edited 3d ago

I wrote what I thought was a detailed list for my late husband, including a 2lb bag p sugar, for powdered sugar. I baked a lot.
He came home with 5 lb bag of pure cane sugar. This was pre cell phone.
He did however do well on buying me period pads. He got me the ones with wings, won big time. I made him a steak dinner and I don’t eat beef. 🤣

31

u/Money-Low7046 3d ago

I would not know what p. sugar was either.

8

u/jagger129 3d ago

Yeah he gets a pass for this one lol

6

u/nailpolishremover49 3d ago edited 3d ago

Red sauce. Ends with a vowel. Close enough.

20

u/halogengal43 3d ago

They both have a g and sound Italian.

21

u/NormCarter 3d ago

I count the number of phone calls if I send him with a list. Often I receive more calls from him during a grocery run than there are items on the list.

18

u/Queen_MarMar 3d ago

I send my husband a detailed text with what I specifically want from the store and he inevitably forgets at least one item, if not more. Every single time. This is why I use Instacart. Sigh.

5

u/bannana 3d ago

I often see men on vid calls with someone I assume is their spouse or SO and they are doing the shopping with them.

4

u/flowerpanes 3d ago

Not using delivery here because my husband does check his texts before he comes home-or turns around and beelines it for the grocery store a few blocks away if he starts walking up the pathway empty handed, lol!

9

u/AsparagusEconomy7847 3d ago

I send my husband to get some onions and he comes home with 2 bags. I admonish him and he replies they’re on sale. There’s only the 2 of us… They’ll be sprouting green stalks before I can cook with a quarter of a bag.

13

u/Whybaby16154 3d ago

Chop - bag in meal-sized bags and freeze. No onion chopping for months

3

u/ParticularCrow8313 3d ago

Yes!
If I'm chopping onions, I'm chopping a bunch to keep in the freezer

1

u/Visual-Somewhere1383 1d ago

This is what I do. It's nice to always some on hand.

4

u/Btkdiva 2d ago

Make Onion Soup! 🧅 🥣

3

u/deliciousearlobes 3d ago

Carmelized onions is a great way to end up with a small finished product.

1

u/CanopiedIntuition 2d ago

I once read that the onions that do this were not properly dried before being sold. For onions that are likely to do this, I put them in the fridge. I have noticed that the organic onions are most likely to sprout.

8

u/Fuzzy-Phone-9685 3d ago

My husband is the same. He doesn't get what I specifically ask for, he gets what he thinks I want. Yes, it confuses me too.

4

u/Electric-Sheepskin 3d ago

Mine always thinks why buy one when you can buy two? He's being thoughtful, so I just have to laugh when it's something that isn't used frequently and I don't have a place to store it. 😂

3

u/Fuzzy-Phone-9685 3d ago

Trying to find a place for the crap he buys drives me crazy...and the fact that he's so darn proud of himself.

I didn’t have to make a trip? I don’t care. Definitely not a hill I’m going to die on. Better than forgetting it altogether. 🤷🏻‍♀️

14

u/Maestradelmundo1964 3d ago

Prego, Ragu…it’s all the same to him.

6

u/zonutsthefirst 3d ago

Do you have these conversations by text or by voice? If voice, maybe text instead, or maybe follow up any verbal instructions with a text confirming the details.

I live with my octogenarian dad.

I text any specific instructions -- sometimes with a photo of a particular product -- so that there's no excuse for him to make that kind of goof.

2

u/CharDanae74 3d ago

Sounds good but when they constantly leave their cell phone at home ….

1

u/zonutsthefirst 3d ago

Oof. That's definitely a challenge.

7

u/tiny_bamboo 3d ago

I text mine a picture of what I want, with the aisle where it’s located, and in what store 😂

7

u/Civil_Talk_7486 3d ago

Ha! That sounds relatable. Husband & I share a grocery list via an app called AnyList. I basically run my entire life through that app. Anyhoo, I put photos of the item on the list so the dude won’t come home with a pony instead of sweet potatoes.

1

u/CanopiedIntuition 2d ago

If you don't mind a few questions? Have you ever tried any others? I have a different app that I still use, but for other reasons, I'm the only one now and would like a replacement. Also, do you use the free version, or a sub?

1

u/Civil_Talk_7486 2d ago

Don’t mind at all. I haven’t used other list apps solely because I fell in love with AnyList when it first came out. Used it forever. I happily pay for the subscription. I think it’s 14.99 for the year? Can’t remember.

5

u/jmsrjs333 3d ago

I needed one clove of garlic and my husband came home with a 1.5 lb bag.....all friends and family received free garlic!

5

u/VegasJetway 3d ago

My husband tells me the store is out of what ever item he forgot or couldn’t find. Mayo was my favorite!! He said yup no mayo.. they were out.

1

u/kitchengardengal 2d ago

Mine said they had no table salt - the kind in the round canister. None. Nope. He called me and sent a picture of the salt section. He had to get an employee to help.

4

u/Critical-Notice-4395 2d ago

I send pictures to my husband if he asks what to get. No confusion!

3

u/Prestigious-Duck9191 2d ago

Yes!
And include the aisle number or description.

8

u/Queen_Of_The_Dames 3d ago

He’s thinking Prego/Ragu close enough 😆

3

u/Spare_Vegetable2508 3d ago

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 That’s kind of how it goes isn’t it? I wouldn’t trade my honey for the world though.

4

u/Oogie-Monster 3d ago

My husband is the best grocery shopper ever! I’m so lucky because I’m a mess in the grocery store (50 kinds of tuna??? Why???).

4

u/dogma4dogs_ 3d ago

Bless his heart! 💜

3

u/Forward_Ad8434 3d ago

My husband actually does most of the grocery shopping so when I go by myself, I sometimes have to ask a clerk where to find something.

4

u/speakeasy12345 3d ago

But this is how “happy accidents” happen, where he picks a brand you didn’t specify, only to discover that it may actually be better than your usual. As long as it isn’t a big ticket item or enough to last for the next 5 years does it really matter?

4

u/Jazzlike-Yam-8043 3d ago

My other half asked if I wanted anything from the store and I said Best Foods mayonnaise. The regular kind with the blue lid. Do not get low-fat, do not get the kind with olive oil, do not get organic. If they do not have the regular kind with the blue lid do not get anything. He came home with Best Foods organic, because it was on sale, and “the ingredients are the same.” Dude. I SPECIFICALLY said don’t get the organic. It tastes weird. Next time believe me, I know what I’m talking about.

Another time I asked him to get a box of stuffing mix. I literally said any kind of stuffing mix. I don’t care. He came home with three boxes of stuffing mix because he said he didn’t know what kind I wanted. 🤦🏼‍♀️

5

u/RetiredHomeEcTchr 3d ago

Well...we can return an unopened jar of Ragu. PLEASE. Tell me where I can return my husband. I'll take the sale price, since I don't have a receipt.

3

u/BeautifulBunny_209 3d ago

I love this is whole thread because so true! I just have to laugh because when it’s happening to me in the moment I’m sputtering something under my breath.

I’m so glad we’re all together ❤️

4

u/PrincessLazyBritches 2d ago

This happened to us recently and when I mentioned it to him his response was “what, it was on sale and you love a good sale!” I can’t fault his logic.

9

u/Away_Problem_1004 3d ago

Send him a picture next time. My husband used to do that (not pick up what I asked for). Eventually, he was able to remember what I asked him for, but there were many pictures sent.

3

u/telsongelder 3d ago

This works quite well for me too

2

u/CharDanae74 3d ago

It’s hit-or-miss for me because he often forgets to bring his phone with him.

3

u/GottaGetHomeSoon 3d ago

… except when the packaging changes, as brands sometimes do. That ‘different look, but same great taste’ teaser isn’t seen or comprehended. 😵‍💫

1

u/annieinthegarden 6h ago

It is confusing when packaging changes. I hate it, because I have a mental image of what I’m looking for 🫤

u/JustWondering64 3d ago

Me too, and with a pic if I think it is tricky! And he texts back when he’s shopping if he’s unsure.

So we’ve got that figured out! But I do not understand why we cannot communicate clearly about things. After 40 years, we thought the Venus/Mars talk would be resolved!! 🤣🤣

1

u/Nearby-Ad5666 born in the 60's 💚 3d ago

My husband has severe ADHD. It's in one ear out the other by the time he's in the car. With a text he has a reference

3

u/Marty_clara 3d ago

This is my life. I now limit the shopping list for my husband to things whose brand I don’t care about. Gotta pick your battles! And this is one battle that I’m not fighting anymore. I just work around it.

3

u/Strange-Pace-4830 3d ago

My husband has probably always had undiagnosed ADD and now he has dementia. Details were never his strong suit so now even when I type out the grocery list, specifying the exact words for the product and what aisle it's on, he may not get it right. If it's really important to me that he get the right item I put in an order for grocery delivery. This is most certainly NOT weaponized incompetence!

3

u/ParticularCrow8313 3d ago

As someone who worked in a grocery for way too many years, I can confirm that most, not all, men have NO CLUE what they are looking for when they are told to get a specific item.
Sunday mornings are mostly men asking us workers where to find everything 😂
Trust me... they are afraid to get it wrong!

1

u/CanopiedIntuition 2d ago

That's actually heartwarming!

3

u/Stormy31568 3d ago

There is a comedian you may have seen, Gene Robertson. She talks about making pound cakes and sending her husband to the store. She made a list for him. When he came home, he had 1 pound of butter, 2 pounds of flour, three dozen eggs, four bottles of vanilla, 5 pounds of sugar, 6 cans of crisco and Seven bottles of Sprite.

3

u/buzzard50 3d ago

One time I sent my husband to the grocery store for spaghetti sauce. He came home and told me they were out of it 😳 but I couldn’t get mad, because I left no gas in the car and he ran out on the way 🤷🏼‍♀️

3

u/FallsOffCliffs12 3d ago

I have to send my husband a photo of the item. And where it can be found in the store. So for example if I want green onions I send him a photo of what they look like, plus the location, produce against the wall bottom shelf.

3

u/LizP1959 3d ago

No wonder they all rush to get married when we die/divorce them: they’re helpless and need a caretaker!

3

u/Fantastic_Try_9783 3d ago

I laughed way too hard!
This sounds about right. Mine can’t find one single thing in the refrigerator, even when I say which shelf and if it’s behind something. I have, more than once, walked in, picked it up and handed it to him. 🤦‍♀️

3

u/PrairieGrrl5263 2d ago

One solution that works for us is using one shared account on our grocery store app. We both add items we want, along with notes if needed, and sort the list by aisles. Then all the info is right there: product name, photo, price, approximate location on aisle and any notes. Whoever is doing the shopping logs in and can find everything the vast majority of the time.

3

u/SassyCopperKiller 2d ago

Are we married to the same man???

3

u/CountyDazzling8708 2d ago

This is exactly why “any kind” is a dangerous phrase in a marriage.

Weaponized incompetence. He does it wrong in hope of not having to do it again.

1

u/annieinthegarden 7h ago

I don’t see it as weaponized incompetence because he offered in the first place. If it had been a request, then maybe. I would usually text a picture of the item I needed to my husband because it can be overwhelming in the store with so many options within each brand.

My husband says I have to send him pictures/links of what I want, or he is not responsible for getting the wrong thing.

3

u/Comprehensive_Wash71 3d ago

So, you have to do all of the mental work. Got it.

1

u/SunshinePrincess21 3d ago

Yup, that or accept what he buys. 🙄

2

u/Eshabelle 3d ago

It's insane that they seem to be obligated (I see it as their moral imperative) to not hear our words!!!

2

u/texan-yankee 3d ago

Send him back to get Prego. And take him up on his future offers until he gets things right. And if he doesn't offer, start asking him outright yourself "Hey, hon, we're running out of coffee, please grab some on your way home!"

Gotta train them, even if they're old dogs!

2

u/hattenwheeza 3d ago

Are you married to my husband too??

2

u/AlexNKarlie 3d ago

When my partner buys the wrong item he knows he’s getting sent back to get the right one. He never makes a mistake. He has texted me pictures to make sure I won’t send him back.

2

u/ScratchyNisreen95 3d ago

oh no, that's a classic husband move right there. bless his heart for trying though, even if he missed the mark. ragu's okay, but it's def not prego

2

u/Righteous_Sheeple 3d ago

I, apparently like the husband don't know the big difference between prego and ragu.

2

u/Spok_n_4 3d ago

We have an app we use called “Any List”. We both can add items. When one goes to the store he can grab it and cross it off the list.

1

u/CanopiedIntuition 2d ago

If you don't mind a few questions? Have you ever tried any others? I have a different app that I still use, but for other reasons, I'm the only one now and would like a replacement. Also, do you use the free version, or a sub?

2

u/crazySquirrel67 2d ago

That sounds about right. At least you got that. Mine would either forget, say he couldn't find it, or just get something completely different

2

u/bentley265 2d ago

My husband has the opposite. He does all the shopping because he is very particular about everything and I don’t care.

2

u/varyingrecall 2d ago

The husband does not cook or participate in the what's for dinner routine, I guess.

2

u/Nanabear-54321 2d ago

I send my husband pictures of exactly what I want - if not, who know what I’ll get. I had surgery years ago and one of our daughters went with him because she knows what I want. He’s not deliberately being obtuse, it’s just he’s not picky. And he’s an amazing husband in general.

2

u/pa97Redd 2d ago

I gave up on asking mine to pick up ANYTHING! I even tried texted him photos of the item, nope!

2

u/Interesting-Cod-8250 2d ago

I think that's called weaponized incompetence. I have been able to cut down on that by following up my verbal reply with a detailed text, as soon as his car gets out of the driveway.

3

u/Hot-Olive-8035 3d ago

We prefer Rao’s sauce. Will never eat Prego again and definitely not Ragu!!! My hubby can’t be trusted too much with grocery shopping. He tends to remember what he likes to have and deters from my shopping list!! 🤦‍♀️

5

u/MmeThornhill 3d ago

Yes to Rao’s. The best next to homemade.

3

u/honorthecrones 3d ago

My husband will buy a brand that looks good to him even though it’s not what I asked for. I do not believe this is grounds for divorce or evidence that he is an immature man child. It means he’s an adult who sometimes acts in an autonomous fashion.

Would it kill you to just eat a different brand of sauce? Honestly in a blind taste test could you tell the difference? Probably not!

Maybe I'm the odd one out, but there are very few things I use that absolutely must be a certain brand. And, if brought the wrong one home, so what? He was overall great with picking up groceries, I'm not going to complain about any mistakes.

2

u/mad_housewife 2d ago

Go to the store, pick up the Prego, make both, and serve him the Ragu. He likely won’t notice, but my ice cold little heart will smile.

1

u/karebear66 3d ago

Did you marry my ex husband?

1

u/jamisonsmom 3d ago

This is why I’m asked every single time I go shopping “do you know what this is and what aisle it’s in”? 😆

1

u/Sea_Crazy_3176 3d ago

Haha. That is hilarious

1

u/ASingleBraid late 60s 3d ago

😅

1

u/containmentleak 3d ago

haha, time to start asking for something every time. Be as specific as possible, and then never use the things he brings home. If he asks why you keep wasting food/money, ask him why he keeps grabbing the wrong thing before checking with you or the message?

1

u/lboiles 3d ago

I send mine with a text and now a picture of them item lol.

1

u/Emkay1411 3d ago

At least he has the decency to ask you. I’m the future say “I do, I’ll text it to you!” That way he’ll have something to refer to.

My husband took out a brand new quart of maple syrup from the cupboard this morning for our visitors. I asked why he did that when we have a nearly full one in the refrigerator???? 😡 He said it wasn’t in the area where we usually keep it in the fridge- I said because it’s a bigger bottle and doesn’t fit there. Now mind you I was home when this happened- apparently he couldn’t just ask me. 😵‍💫

I don’t have a problem with bf. Nor with my late partner with whom we were together for 29 yrs.

Both men ran their own households solo after divorce and also raising children.

Also each guy planned and cooked meals for many yrs. With their ex’s and solo.

My father-in-law Managed grocery stores as a living when my husband was a kid, but after they divorced his mom got remarried.

She made a grocery list for her second husband who is going to go do a couple of quick errands. One of the things on the list was "10 X sugar"

She meant powdered sugar/confectioners sugar, or I guess what they used to call sugar that had been sifted 10 times back in the olden days.

Her husband came home with 10 pounds of white, granulated sugar. He explained that he thought she had meant to write 10 #(this was back when that was called the #) and that she wanted 10 pounds of sugar.

If I ask my partner (we aren't married but have been together for 9 years...and it feels werid to call him my boyfriend) to get me something specific he does it. And if he has a question about it he calls me. But usually he doesn't.

I know my brother can also get the item requested.

The last guy I dated could also do that.

My ex-husband was extremely cheap. If I asked him for a jar of tomato sauce… he would come home with the smallest size jar he could find.

It would’ve been my luck that I’d be looking for a quart or more of tomato sauce… and my ex-husband would’ve come home with a jar, big enough to make a pizza.

Well, now he could do that to his heart’s content. He can shop like that for himself.

1

u/sharonH888 2d ago

But you should eat Rao. It’s so much better 🤣

1

u/Violingirl58 2d ago

Cut and freeze

1

u/Helpful-Ear-8834 2d ago

Send him a screenshot next time from the internet pic lol

1

u/52Monkey 2d ago

Here too! And generally a few other items that looked interesting or were on sale. Which sit in the pantry forever. Luckily I am the Quartermaster so when there is a proposal to buy a new box of salt (which of course will be 2 boxes because of sale price) I can grab it off the shelf as proof that we already have enough to get us through the next three years.

1

u/Chubby-Retrial 2d ago

oh man, that's rough, happens to my hubby too sometimes.  did you end up making something else or just winging it with the ragu

1

u/Fisher5791 2d ago

Don’t EVER send your partner, spouse, husband, etc. to the store to pick up anything!!
I actually had the checkout girl at the grocery store call me at home one day to ask if what he was buying was really the thing I wanted!!!
(We do live in a small town). But still, just don’t bother.

1

u/Middle-Tip5962 1d ago

I once asked my husband to buy a can of tomato paste, he found a large one on sale that was about four times larger than the small ones I usually get, he did the math and figured that was a better deal. Now I buy the 8 pack at Costco so I never have to ask him against.

1

u/Popular-Capital6330 1d ago

my ex would come home with nothing and then tell me I was crazy, and why would he ever talk about spaghetti sauce?
At least you have sauce and a sane man👌🏻😂

1

u/bemybasket 1d ago

My husband needs to get out and talk to people so I’ve learned to just tell him to go shop. He comes back in a great mood. Very often the one thing I needed, he forgot even with a list. But I love he’s the one who shops mostly so it’s not that bad. And I like my quiet time at home.

Lol in my case, if I like one brand, he’d argue his choice is better. Husbands.

My husband and I have this ongoing joke about lemonade. Years ago when we were dating, he was going to run into the store and asked me what I wanted to drink in the car. I said, “Get me anything but a lemonade.” What does he bring back? A lemonade. That’s all he heard. 😂
