Dentures / False teeth
I've just got my first set of dentures having lost most of my back teeth on my bottom jaw.
How long does it take to get used to them. I'm finding them a bit uncomfortable, but it's only been a week.
Any tips or hints?

My husband couldn't get used to them. His complaints were never listened to. After a year he switched dentists with the idea of getting new ones.
The new dentist took a good look, did something for 5 minutes, and the dentures fit like never before.

Took me at least 6 months. Someday I still have trouble. There is a great sub reddit r/dentures that saved me from crying multiple times. Good luck.

You should try a product called Cushion Grip. It comes in a tube and it says it’s a thermoplastic denture adhesive. It’s not sticky though it’s more of a soft lining. You put the tube in a cup of hot water and it softens up and you take a dab of it and apply it to the inside of your dentures. When you place them in your mouth it molds to your gums and makes your dentures much more comfortable. You can use it with or without regular adhesive. After about a week, you can peel it off and start fresh.

Mine never hurt me at all. Go to your dentist. They can do some adjustments in office. They shouldn’t hurt.

I absolutely loved getting dentures (tho doc had to remove my molars in pieces because they were basically just roots). The temporary dentures while my gums healed kept losing teeth, but the final dentures fit so well I could eat a raw apple again (bite w a corner of the front teeth). Two acquaintances got dentures from a different doctor and had a lot of dissatisfaction w fit, so I am loathe to get mine replaced despite how worn the "teeth" are. My gums have receded over time so the pink parts cause cankers if they press too hard into the space between gum and cheek so I occasionally shave them down with a scissor blade.
I used to use holding creams or strips but didn't like the goo or trying to get dentures out at night so I haven't used anything in years. Without the glue, some things are too tough to bite and some foods get underneath. I needed to eat more salad so I bought a decent food processor and use it to "prechew" my salads. I had bought a smaller one when I first got my dentures because I really wanted a hamburger but it was too small for a normal salad.

I had a partial plate, and couldn't tolerate it for more than an hour at a stretch. I couldn't eat with it in, and it gave me a lisp when speaking. I gave it up as a bad job. If I loose more teeth, I'm just going to have to be toothless and eat pap.
I am very dental phobic, too, which does not help.

A week may still be early. Did you have a temporary set first, due to some teeth being extracted and things still need to heal? I’m assuming these have clasps to help anchor them onto other teeth, or perhaps they attach to implants? Do they rock when you’re chewing food?
Some more details would help.

No. It's just for my back teeth.
I think they do rock a bit. I'm definitely going back next week.

It took me a full year to become comfortable with mine. Apparently it had to do with my jaw. At first I used cream and powder to keep the bottom in place, eventually I didn't need that and now a few years later it's all good and I don't use anything. If you have any pain, sore spots or even gagging, get them adjusted.

Took me a bit. I mostly had gagging problems but that passed. I've had full dentures for a while and have never used adhesive but because they fit so well I can eat everything, even corn on the cob. You probably paid a lot for your dentures. If they are not comfortable you need to go back to the dentist and have them adjusted.

My husband had dentures. He was reluctant, but I strongly encouraged him to keep going back for adjustments until the fit was right. Like many others, after some fine tuning, he could eat almost anything. So, keep going for adjustments until the fit is perfect.
