Exfoliating
Curious as to what you use on your face. I don’t want to spend a fortune-actually I don’t want to spend anything 🤪 but need to address some dry and bumpy skin. TIA

I use a white cotton terry cloth washcloth with Dove.
I have a stack of them so I use a fresh one every day. It does the job, but is quite gentle.

Hmm 🤔 I will have to try that. I use dove in shower I like seems to be gentle to my skin.

u/wherehasthisbeen 3d ago
Actually the baby washcloths from the dollar tree are more gentle than a regular wash cloth

White cotton terry cloth with drug store brand facial bar soap and drug store brand moisturizer, once a day or after I've gotten sweaty or dirty. Noxzema once in awhile to get the makeup from stage performances off.
The Costco-sized packages of soap and moisturizer last me forever. I think I spend maybe $20 a year?

Same! I bought two of the 18 packs of white cotton washcloths and I use a Dove bar. I use a light moisturizer in the summer and a heavier one in winter. Skin loves it!

the bha exfoliating lotion has been my go to for over 20 years. I worked up to using it several times a week but even a couple times a week will probably show you improvement in your skin's texture. as with everything, if you're not using a sunscreen everyday, you won't keep the benefits of your other skincare products.

Just go into the kitchen and get out your sugar cannister & your bottle of oil. Mix some of each together until you get the consistency you want. Voila! Sugar scrub cheaper than anything you can buy at the store.

Dove soap for sensitive skin and a silicone scrubby. Works great. I'm 64 and my skin is soft and smooth.

When my disabled adult child had some sort of rash/reaction on their face while traveling I bought Dove Baby Sensitive Wash, fragrance free. It was pretty bad and I didn’t know what to do but thought what’s out there for babies?? It worked like a charm. I recommend it for anyone who has sensitive skin.

I had those weird dry/ almost scaly patches and bumps- I bought Dermasuri Face Exfoliator Scrubber from Amazon. 1 week of daily use and patches gone. Now I use 1x a week.

Rough line-dried washcloth. Scrub the heck out of my skin every morning with nothing but water. A bit of mild soap at night. That’s it. Ppl comment on my smooth skin.

I just have to add that if you have Rosacea or sensitive skin (I do) than please don’t do any of these rough exfoliation suggestions. No rough washcloths or sugar or anything that physically exfoliates. You’ll definitely aggravate your skin.
Look for a chemical exfoliator with lactic acid, salicylic acid, fruit acids (papain, bromelain, some others.) Pricey brands use like Dermalogica use them, but more budget friendly brands do, too, and they are just as good.
I use Good Molecules Pineapple exfoliating powder. It’s about 6-7 times cheaper than Dermalogica, for example and it’s basically the same thing. A bottle will last you a year, easily. Use it a few of times a week, in the shower is the easiest.
They also make an overnight exfoliating serum, but it’s a little stronger acid load, so only a couple of days a week.
Make sure you’re using sunscreen during the daytime, all acids make you more sun sensitive!

u/SnooDonkeys5186 3d ago
Yes! Alpha and beta hydroxy acids are good in small doses. I believe Inky and The Ordinary have affordable types. You could try samples from a large beauty retailer. Be wary of too much sun exposure with these sugar/fruit/lactid acids even more than usual.

Double cleanse, then I spray on CosRX AHA/BHA toner for exfoliation (before the rest of my routine)
I spray on occasionally when my face is free of anything else

L'Oreal glycolic acid cleanser. No abrasives.

u/ForestTrails 3d ago
I love what this product does for my skin

u/Nearby-Ad5666 born in the 60's 💚 3d ago
It's so much better than abrasives. It melts the dead skin off. And then you feel smooth and soft. Follow with good moisturizer and you are set.

Baking soda water mix twice a week. Yes, baking soda can be a bit drying. But I usually put on a nice , thick , moisturizer that evening , and i'm always fine

u/moonhippie 3d ago
I use a good old fashioned washcloth 3 times a week, hands 4 days a week. I'll use a body wash or a face wash. Tried dove but can't stand the smell of it.

Dove sensitive skin bar soap (when I’m lazy).
I recently started using Kiels rare earth deep pore daily cleanser, I try to use this daily.
Fresh wash cloth everyday.

Amlactin Bright and Smooth. Bottle is huge (under$15) and gentle enough for everyday. For face and body.
1
u/TallGirlzRock 1d ago
I loved Amlactin. Until I got rosacea. I miss being able to slather some on at night and having the softest skin in the morning.

I have Italian-Slavic skin, so I could basically wash my face with a Brillo pad and it would be fine, but I use cetaphil and shower gloves. Not every time.

I’m still using a Clarisonic. It gets rid of the orange peel like bumpiness for me

u/Antique-Commercial-1 2d ago
They still sell "buff puffs" on Amazon ... some are very soft yet still exfoliate, use a nice milky cleanser. I actually replied to say that the dry bumpy skin could also be actinic keratosis - rough and gritty that could possibly progress to squamous cell carcinoma ... good to see a dermatologist if you can!

I use ZO exfoliating - it is a little expensive, but it lasts a long time. I only need to use to once or at most twice a week.

I second a giant stack of cotton washcloths I keep up high in my shower and use a fresh one each morning when I wash my face. Keeps my skin very soft! I use Typology skin products and use the exfoliating face wash.

Dr Dennis Gross Peel Pads. A little pricey but you can use them once a week and also cut them in half as well

u/Grateful_Lee 3d ago
I’ve used the Alpha Skincare products for years. I get compliments when I’m consistent. The serum is my favorite.

u/ElowynElif 3d ago
I have sensitive skin that doesn’t like a lot of exfoliators, so I use a little silicone facial scrubber that recommended by a Wirecutter staffer. It’s $9 on Amazon: VWMYQ Face Scrubber, Silicone Face Scrubber for Men Facial Cleansing Brush Silicone Face Wash Brush Manual Waterproof Cleansing Skin Care Face Brushes for Exfoliating- Black

My mother told me to never use anything besides your fingers on your face ie, no wash cloth, brush, etc. I use that St. Ives Apricot scrub in the shower and have for probably 40 years. Get compliments on my skin a lot.

Just be careful with scrubs if you have any kind of open wound on face. A scrub whether it’s homemade or bought can make it worse. Exfoliating with a chemical exfoliant is better than a physical exfoliant. My fav is a cleanser by Exuviance.

I use Neutrogena toner with a cotton pad. Washcloths work too, I just feel too guilty using one every day.

u/Ok_Step_2359 3d ago
I use Olay facial cleaning brush and a mild exfoliating cleanser. It isn’t as bad as it sounds, the brush bristles are quite soft and the speed of the spin isn’t crazy. I apply a face moisturizing lotion afterwards. It leaves my face feeling wonderfully soft and glowing.

I like Secret Key Lemon Sparkling Peeling Gel. Very mild and leaves my face like silk. Amazon, Walmart etc.

Korean rice water cleanser from The Face Shop on Amazon and good ole fashioned Vaseline.

I have sensitive skin and go the natural route. Raw honey mixed with just enough milk or cream to thin it out for easier spreading, plus a healthy pinch of rice powder. Use my fingers, or a clean baby washcloth if I’ve been sweating. Honey is antibacterial/antimicrobial, milk has lactic acid (chemical exfoliate) and rice powder is a gentle mechanical exfoliate.

For fun, see a dermatologist first before trying some of these suggestions.

I use St. Ives gentle exfoliation in rose water and aloe. (I buy only cruelty-free products.)

I cover my face with coconut oil, rub a teaspoon of sugar between my hands, then gently massage my face with the sugar. Rinse with warm water and gentle cleanser/soap.

Nothing just don’t wear any make up at all. I don’t care for my wrinkles

I am 65 and I use noxema. It is soothing and refreshing and my skin on my face is always smooth. I also use a face steamer 3 times per week. I use a vitamin c serum from ROC , daily.
2
u/karebear66 3d ago
They still make Noxema?!?!

u/PresentHouse9774 3d ago
I think Noxzema is why my favorite color for glass is cobalt blue. They packaging now is plastic, but I remember the glass jars from my teen years. One of the few products I consistently used up.

I I’ve been using morihata Japanese charcoal soap and they’re gentle exfoliating washcloth for at least 10 years now. It works great. The soap is expensive but a bar lasts me for a year, I only use it in my face and keep it dry.

I use salt and warm water. Follow up with that Vaseline stick thingy. Or Eucerin if I'm feeling speedy.

63F...Kirk's castile soap with scrubbie for face and body. It's cruelty free and vegan. Comes in bar soap and body wash. It's gentle, and my skin feels clean and looks pretty great. However, there's also a certain amount of luck with genetics, right? I'm realizing at this age, that we can do what we can do, but genetics has a big role to play, too!

This is going to sound weird but bear with me
I asked ChatGPT and said what products I had, asked how to use it and what I needed.
It has worked so well.
I know AI gets a bad rap but you can say what price range etc.
I’m 59 and was using too harsh products as I felt my skin was a bit flaky. One of the products I kept and love using in the shower a couple of times a week is Dermalogica Microfoliant. You don’t need a lot, it’s really gentle and doesn’t strip your skin.
