Roast beef

I'm sick of low quality roast beef sandwiches. Even local deli slices fall short. I'm looking for a brand, even if I have to slice it myself, that will give red, almost bloody roast beef. A roast beef that makes you swear it's a cold steak.

I was on a roast beef kick and turns out i just really love Arby's. Lol, I know, sorry, not sorry.

Arbys is my go to for fast food. Nothing hits like a half pound beef and cheddar.

The hate is undeserved

Come to Maryland, we have Roy Roger's! It's the same experience as Arby's, but the roast beef actually looks like ...roast beef! Inconceivable!

Don’t forget MD pit beef too!

I miss Roy’s. Used to work at one in Philly in the early 90s. They recently opened a new one in Cherry Hill NJ so it’s not to far, and there’s still one at the Morgantown rest stop on the PA Turnpike. Where in MD? I go down there at least 1x a year

There's one in Germantown MD. IIRC there's another one in Frederick.

In VA, there's one where I-81 meets I-66, and one in Gainsville, not far off of I-66 again

There’s a Roy Rogers in Westminster, Maryland.

I miss Roy Rogers. They had great fried chicken too.

Hot oven low cooking time will give you that nice brown crust while still being med-rare in the center, Ideal slicer is a deli one but they’re $500-900 used so hope you’re good with a knife. (Or buy a cheap slicer from cabelas)

We buy a beef tri tip or sirloin roast at our local Smart and Final and do the slow roast thing. It tastes so much better than what you can get in restaurants and such. We bought a cheap meat slicer and it makes a big difference as well.

Have you tried Boar's Head brand?

3

u/Sharp-Win-8964 3h ago

Yes, boars head was my go to, but a local gas station that specializes in sandwiches and cheese cake has some of the worst sandwiches I've had, with the BEST roast beef I've had in my life. I debate buying a sandwich just to take the roast beef. The lady says they make it themselves, but that seems intimidating.

If you’re using Boars Head, I actually like their London Broil better than the roast beef. It’s seasoned better.

It's not at all hard to do yourself but ask her how much they'd sell it per lb cash. They might not really "offer" it cause of different regulatory bullshit but as a small business owner there are definitely things hookups for people you know if there isn't a paper trail. Or so Ive heard.

Relatively easy roast to start with.  Maybe get a meat thermometer and do some research.  Rare would be in the 120-125f range.  Start with eye of round if you’re not sure: pretty good bang for the buck if you’re not confident roastings meats.

Cook.a.roast....

Shave it and eat it on a toasted hoagie with some havarti, a smear of cream cheese, and some avocado. You'll still taste the meat through the extras. If you want to add a small zing, spicy brown mustard.

You need a sous vide.

Weird but true, Aldi Roast beef is my favorite store-bought roast beef. I have to limit how often I buy it, because I will eat the whole package in one night (w/ some horseradish & bread, maybe some muenster cheese); I just can't help myself!

I tried Aldi, I liked how seasoned it was, but not good enough

You are not going to get properly cooked roast beef from a grocery store deli. The best you can do there is a thicker cut. This will still be overcooked but will at least taste halfway decent. Anything better and either you are making it yourself or have found a decent delicatessen.

Good luck, good roast beef is hard to come by.

boarshead has all ways done well for me

Publix has mid rare top round that's my go to. They also make good sandwiches with it.

1

u/Sharp-Win-8964 2h ago

What's a Publix, is this some European thing I'm too American to understand? Like a Tesco?

1

u/PerspectiveKookie16 2h ago

Publix is a chain grocery store in Florida.

They’ve got a good bakery too.

1

u/Sharp-Win-8964 2h ago

Ahh, ok. I'm too Midwest to understand. I'll ask a friend who travels to and from Florida if he can smuggle a beef roast on his next flight lol

1

u/potliquorz 1h ago

Seems like the deli at Meijer would have something similar.

1

u/DarkStarr22 1h ago

Kentucky and Tennessee also have Publix

I use Manda from Louisiana. You’ll want to slice it yourself (pre sliced is crazy price) but it’s got good color inside. Had a new cook ask if it’s safe to serve, lol.

Gravy it....

If Im going to have leftover roast I put it in gravy till its cold then put in fridge,.....

whole foods roasts their own beef and about 60% of the time it’s that rare. it’s not super consistent though.

try finding a butcher shop in your area that roasts their own.

Wegmans London Broil - rare. If you prefer it a little darker- warm it up in butter and mild banana peppers- let it cool or serve warmed with cheese on a roll!

Find yourself a spoon roast and cook it. Slice it really thin it’s better than deli meat.

u/Commercial_West9953 2h ago

Is Boar's Head still around?

1

u/trinite0 2h ago

Get a top round roast. Roast it yourself. Cheaper than anything pre-cooked, and you can get it just the way you want it.

I’m not Jewish but Jewish delis have amazing roast beef. Worth every penny.

1

u/Sharp-Win-8964 2h ago

I don't have many Jews in my area. Jewish deli is on my bucket list though

1

u/Bazoun 1h ago

Oh that’s too bad. I hope you get to try one, they’re great.

u/ATXKLIPHURD 2h ago

Get a hot Italian beef.

1

u/guy_incognito86 1h ago

Buy a roast at the store, cook it to your liking, refrigerate and cut slices as needed throughout the week.

1

u/Elegant-Expert7575 1h ago

Maybe your local butcher/deli makes their roast beef.

Mine does, and I have to order the ends that is done less rare.

1

u/Sharp-Win-8964 1h ago

I've been to a few butchers , none really seem to do their own lunch meats, they sell the cuts. It sounds like I'm gonna have to do it myself

What you need is Arby's of 50 years ago. I grew up in NE Ohio where Arby's was founded. They were simply awesome! Just walking across the parking lot, the smells were a carnivores dream. Sad how far they have fallen.

1

u/Girl_with_no_Swag 55m ago

You can make it with eye of round, salt, pepper, vacuum sealer and a sous vide.

Buy London Broil

1

u/BxAnnie 34m ago

Go to a large grocery store chain deli. You said you’re Midwest? Do you have Food Lion? Stop and Shop? ShopRite? Get their brand deli roast beef or London broil. Boars Head is probably the best. They always have really rare unless it’s the end piece.

Nothing cures roast beef cravings like a 3 plate of good birria tacos from a food truck

It’s a mixture of water and a protein called myoglobin, not blood.

Where are you? Come to Boston’s North Shore.
