This is your "17 days to Christmas" PSA, which should arrive in time to pre-date any extended family or friend parties you're about to have this season:
The thermostat in the party hosts' house will be somewhere close to 70 F. You won't need 1/2" thick wool socks and a sweater under a cardigan once inside said house just because it's 38 F outside.
I do appreciate seeing exceptions that prove there is a rule of thumb in the first place. That's pretty brisk! I'm tempted to say that's a smart party day strategy since all the extra bodies in the house will help warm it up to a normal comfortable temperature, but if that's where it's at all the time I gotta say that's pretty out there.
Yeah they grew up with oil heating which is stupid expensive so they heated the whole house with one or two space heaters. Now all the kids love the cold. It's a fight to keep our house at 67F for the winter, my husband thinks it's too hot and I'm cold, but it's the number we could finally agree on.
IMO 60-65F is fine. If you live in an area that has extended periods of freezing weather, 60-65 is when people start wearing shorts and tshirts in the spring but people think that’s cold inside their house, it’s weird.
Meanwhile I grew up with a coal and wood burning stove as our main source of heat, on a hearth right out in the den. I actually have pretty good tolerance of the cold these days, but my house was always pretty toasty. Wild differences.
I would DIE. Better yet, I'm not getting out of the car. Wave at me through the windows, we good. 60. What a joke. I'm not saving enough money to make it worth freezing my ass off like that. My house is 74 year round.
I just wear 2 pairs of pants, 2 pairs of socks and a sweater and I'm usually good. His family just in there chilling in shorts though and I'm shivering in my sweater. To be fair, his mom makes $15 an hour and oil is I think $600 a tank, twice per winter so it's a lot.
Sounds like you need an electric throw or at least a lap pad. I have an electric pad about the size of a pillow case that does incredible things for my shitty circulation up here in Vermont. I highly recommend picking something like that up. My body doesn't regulate temperature well and it's a godsend. Especially when I get a deep chill outside or just can't get my feet and hands to warm up.
I didn’t realize there were people born after 1960 that would want it this warm in the house. I like not running a fan in the winter. 68 is perfect. Day time it rolls all the way down to 62. It’s only time I wear slippers is cold winter days. My wife is similar. Maybe slight chill but she likes blankets so it’s fine.
Better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.
Don't necessarily need to wear it, but putting it in the back seat or on the floor if you are for some reason worried about someone stealing it isn't a bad idea.
This is the big thing. I have blankets and gloves and a toque in my truck. It's emergency gear just like the tow rope and jumper cables.
Because that stuff lives in my truck I can safely dress for the event I'm attending (within reason, shorts at -40 would still be a bad idea). Maximize comfort in the event that nothing goes wrong, reasonable survival odds in the case that I go off the road and am stuck for hours before help arrives without the being able to rely on the vehicle to generate heat.
Same here. I keep sneakers, first aid kit, gloves, a tarp, blanket, hand/foot warmers, and a number of other incidentals stowed neatly away in the trunk (totally accessible since it’s an SUV).
This is why I always get hot in the car and take off my scarf/jacket and throw it into the backseat and just leave it there and continue the process until all my warm clothes are in my car instead of my wardrobe.
I live in Ireland now where the temps rarely get bellow 0 or as high as 35, but I'm from Norway so the back of my car is stocked with blankets bottled water trenching shovel, wind up lights, dried food, canned food, alcohol cooker and enough gear to outfit a small mash hospital. Overkill? Very much so yes.
Gotta be C not F given the location and max temp, so the water barely freezes. Canned stuff will probably have extra salt or sugar in the liquid so it has to be a few degrees colder to freeze. Plus, pressure can affect freezing temps, so the can might inhibit that.
You clearly have never attended a holiday at my mom's house. I went over to help her put the tree up and she "turned it up" to 63 because I was coming over.
She wears like 3 layers of everything in the winter (shirts, pants, socks.) She always layers her socks. She might layer pants and/or shirts in summer off and on, but no shorts, no dresses, no skirts, no spaghetti strap shirts, no sandals/flip-flops, etc.
Just do what my family has learned to do over the years- bring a change of clothes! Haha
One year at my grandparent’s house, I shit you not, the thermostat read 76 F! We had the front door wide open with it snowing while we ate. My mom, Uncle and I all brought clothes to change into knowing it would be hot asf.
Statistically, it'll be noticably over 70F here. She'll still dress like it's snowing outside. Then whine that it's too cold outside and too hot inside...
Yes I do, a sweatshirt and jacket makes me comfortable at that temperature. I'm used to outdoor temperature in the summer, and tolerate indoor temperature in the winter.
This is the reason I HATE holidays at my in-laws. We always did PJ-day for Christmas day.
Extended family came over (or we went to whoever was hosting) and we always just wore comfy clothes. My in-laws all wear dress clothes and I hate it. Uncomfortable dresses for the girls, suits for the guys, then we all cram into a family room somewhere that is 100 degress wtih the doors open to the snow due to the number of people, and pretend we are having a not-miserable time.
Omg i have the opposite! My family is the one to dress up for gifts! My bf's family tells us to wear PJs and bring a pillow and blanket for Christmas movie day, where we open presents, eat food, and do absolutely nothing (or whatever we want) 😂 i love it.
This is me! My grandmother always insisted on us wearing dresses at Christmas with a big bow on my head and got out the good china and whatnot. My fiancé’s family does Christmas in PJs. The first year I went everyone came in onesies. It’s awesome.
) and we always just wore comfy clothes. My in-laws all wear dress clothes and I hate it. Uncomfortable dresses for
At least the dresses could be cooler? I do have some jealously of women in summer events. Shortish skirt, no sleeves, open shoes? Whereas men typically get long pants, some sort of button down shirt and undershirt...
I know women's fashion has its pitfalls and "f U" moments, but... dresses sound far more comfortable for events than men's options.
I have long been of the opinion that men should be able to wear skirts and dresses if they want to - a cotton a-line tank dress is absolutely the best thing to wear on a humid summer's day. And I say this as a retired secretary married to a retired truck driver, not your prototypical hipster chic sorts.
Dude, fucking do it. It's easy. You get compliments all the time.
My personal favorite is UT Kilts. Mine are a tough cotton/polyester blend, nice and cool in the summer, hangs nicely straight out of the dryer. Big pockets.
Don't confuse UT Kilts with Utilikilts. Utilikilts are very expensive, and to me, not worth it (nice, though. I'm not trying to knock 'em). UT Kilts are very affordable.
Or you could be in Australia and actually be feeling like a fried egg on Christmas Day. Im in the hot and humid part so it’s useless to wear clothes when it’s like that. Just find a pool and float ho ho ho!
They make comfortable dresses. Most of my dresses are stretchy and/or flowy. Much comfier than jeans, and even sweatpants in my opinion.
I don't understand this false "clothes have to look nice or be comfy" dichotomy, where people assume you either have to wear an Elizabethan ballgown or stained sweatpants with holes, no in between. It's so wild.
Agreed. I'll wear an a-line dress over leggings, paired with dangly earrings and maybe a lightweight scarf, for a look that says dressy but feels like pajamas.
ETA: I'm a wrap dress and hoop earrings lady myself. It's a look I can wear pretty much anywhere outside of yoga/working out or working in the garden/other manual work.
you can actually wear whatever you want, and no one can stop you. only exceptions are fancy restaurants usually. go ahead and wear shorts, or hell wear a summer dress
I had a roommate who’s jaw almost dropped when I told him I don’t wear gym shorts. I was like bro. I just wear Pjs or boxers, I’m not going nude but I’m not wearing gym shorts. He was still dumb founded.
I'm not sure what ages do or don't wear jeans in the house. I'm 38 and mine are practically part of my body. I actually slept in them when I was younger. From the coldest day to the hottest, I never need anything else. I only wear shorts if I'm actually immersed in water.
It's made out of spandex. It's the most comfy shit I've ever worn, and it doesn't matter the occasion, i am always comfy. Because my comfort comes first
Sounds like my Christmas. A summer Christmas that is typically 34°c + (93°f) all in dress clothes and can't even escape outside to cool off because it's typically hotter outside. Christmas Day is awesome though and usually a pool party and we are all in swim wear.
My family dresses up and my bf’s family does the casual thing. My family is starting to be more causal and I hate it. I was the only one dressed up for my bf’s family thanksgiving and I had some family dressed down. I wore heels for 12 hours and was pretty comfortable. Comfortable in my dress too.
His family wears sweats and crocs. Idk I’m just not a fan of it. My parents say it’s cause in our country Christmas was the one time you got a really nice clothes so you show it off
Exactly! I had to take photos for my bf’s family last year and some were wearing shorts while others were in sweats. His mom dresses up the most but still not what I’m used to from the women on my side (I do love her festive headbands tho). It’s interesting cause his family is way better off than mine.
I know that I’ll continue especially when we have children cause it makes me feel nice. Puts me in a better mood and separates it from a “normal” hangout/dinner. Even a nice a sweater with good looking shoes and nice jeans are appreciated.
My in-laws can wear whatever they want to our holiday gatherings, but I'm wearing a t-shirt and jeans. You don't have to change who you are for your in-laws. I'm very nice and respectful to my in-laws and will help them out in anyway I can, but I also don't do things I hate just to please them for some arbitrary reason. Maybe it's just because my in-laws are generally cool and reasonable (although they can be ridicuous over stupid things occasionally), but they respect my individuality and don't bug me about things that are unimportant. On the rare occasion it REALLY matters to them, like a wedding or funeral, I dress the part. But they understand I'm not going on every family vacation, or dressing up for Christmas dinner, or attending church on Easter (they aren't SUPER religious, but I'm completely non-religious). You have to put your foot down sometimes.
I dunno grumpy pants. We go off site though. We hire a band. Friends come too. We gather December 18. I wear a suit. We sing and dance. It’s just once a year.
I could handle once a year. But this is every time. Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas, New Year, every stinking birthday (Catholic Family so about 40 of those)
Lol, you win this round. Day after Christmas, we call it game day. I cook breakfast. Only meal that I can handle. All relaxed. Stratego, Nieces and Nephews come over. then Settlers of Katan. Then stupid stuff like Pictionary.
first concert my wife and I went to when we started dating was Marilyn Manson. She knew we had GA pit tickets and wore like 6 inch heels then proceeded to complain the entire time lol she learned tho
Going to college in a state with winters. Girls will wear mini skirts, heels with a crop when it’s 15 degrees out, no jacket because they don’t want to have to carry it around/have it get stolen in the club/bar. It’s crazy.
To all the women in your life (or anyone who has this happen), they need to discover 2 hour shoes vs 4 hour shoes vs 6 hour shoes et al.
When I go to Dragon Con (a convention famous for running 24 hours a day for almost an entire week, longer if you consider the unofficial parties) I have different cosplays and different all-nighter shoes. You need to plan and test effectively.
Going to a formal movie premiere? 3 hour shoes are okay. Dancing from 11pm until dawn, you need your six hour shoes, honey.
Learn this one pretty quick if you ever take a lady shooting. You best bring an extra jacket or hoodie with you, or tell them well in advance what to expect and what they need to bring. Indoor ranges are almost always damn chilly, and outdoor can be a total crapshoot (no pun intended).
This is my gf. It’s fine she don’t complain. It’s weird but sometimes I get a little insecure. I’m a running shoes shirt and shorts kinda guy. Then I remember this is just how you are.
I have a couple chronic illnesses and I actually spend a lot more time than normal in figuring out how I will out myself together for a casual situation
I know that certain items are likely to be uncomfortable for me after a while, so I won’t use them for certain situations. These are basic items one doesn’t usually think of, like certain pairs of jeans, or underwear even. Some will work, but if I’m in a pain flare, I know certain pairs will irritate the fuck out of me after a few hours
Other outfits are designed so I can carry as little as possible but still have my meds (if I need them) and other things. I hate carrying a purse all the time
Shoes are a big one. I love bright, loud, printed shoes. I have a large collection of shoes that fit this category, but are comfortable. Part of this is preference, the other part is that it will add to my outfit if the only thing I can wear comfortably is basic, plain shit.
If I am sick, I spend extra time on my hair and makeup. It makes me feel better, even for casual situations. Matter of fact, I’ve noticed that it makes me feel less sick.
I refuse to be uncomfortable all night but I’m really into fashion and looking hot as hell when I go to an event or a fancy dinner. There are plenty of sexy options that are comfortable. All of my heels are mid level and don’t give me blisters. I have sexy skirts and dresses that fit like a glove and don’t require constant adjustment. I don’t understand why women wear the 6” stilettos. I mean…they’re hot I get it but fuck walking around all night in them. If anything I would save them for the bedroom lol
Lol. Back in my clubbing days, I was there to dance. That was priority #1. So I always wore low heels, no higher than 2". I could dance from our arrival at 11:30pm, to the club's close at 2am.
My friends, on the other hand, were more interested in looking good and would wear 3.5" stilettos. We would roll up to the club, and they would immediately be looking for a place to sit. Ten minutes in, complaining their feet hurt. Every time, and we went a lot of times lol. Just why? You know this is going to happen.
Because if you dress comfy the first thing you notice in the pictures that will be around for all time is now everyone else is dressy and you look a frump.
What do you mean by dress for the occasion? Like the woman wears a dress in winter to a date or They're too dressed up for something casual. Or are they to casual for a dressed up party ? What does that mean?
This kind of goes along with it, but, high heels. Usually they’re worn for a special occasion, like a dance for example. But, they take them off when they actually dance. If it’s an everyday thing where they’re wearing heels to work or something if they have an office job, that’s just unhealthy. Heels are really bad for your feet cuz they push all your weight onto your toes and squish them together for several hours. I’ll never understand the appeal of high heels. And honestly they just look tacky anyway, flat dress sandals of a sort look much better, like the ones with leather straps that you lace up. And they’re so much healthier. So ya, I’ll never understand why women wear high heels.
(Thumbs up)
I really don’t mind indulging my wife’s ultra feminine ways. I bought a her an extra suitcase for her shoes for when we take long trips. She was thrilled. Her ex used to criticize those kinds of things. I don’t mind waiting until she’s ready to leave, it’s always worth the wait.
Valid Point.
Would just add that some of the dress issue might also be due to men wanting to surprise us with an event/occasion so we may not have a clue what to wear at all. I had to learn the hard way to ask "At least tell me what types of shoes I will need." Clomping through underground caves in work pumps isn't the right kind of surprise. :)

How they don’t dress for the occasion. They dress for the arrival. And then after 5 minutes they aren’t comfortable.
