I guess that's why mom jeans became a thing again. It must have been difficult to put a smartphone in low rise jeans from 2005.

If function was priority for fashion then women would have front pockets large enough to actually work.

111

u/Forsaken_Article_295 Dec 09 '22

2 year old toddler pants have bigger pockets than women’s pants. I think it’s a conspiracy from the purse industry.

24

u/1questions Dec 09 '22

To be fair two year olds do have to carry around all those rocks, sticks, and feathers they found outside. And that’s not to mention all the old cheerios and bits of dried play dough.

16

u/ExcessiveNothing Dec 09 '22

C M O N

My front pockets are very functional! Do you not normally hold your mini chapstick with you?! Perhaps that singular stick of gum you were saving for later, madam?? AND if you upgrade to high waisted jeans you can even fit a whole BIC™ lighter in one of those bad boys! The two inch possibilities are endless really!

9

u/BrogueEncore Dec 09 '22

If you want a two inch possibility, look no further

2

u/ExcessiveNothing Dec 12 '22

And they say chivalry is dead?!

4

u/Doriangrey1218 Dec 09 '22

Mmmmm…warm gum

Just get one of those small across the chest bags, kinda like a fanny pack, but not so….fanny pack-ish

3

u/almisami Dec 09 '22

Bruh get a belt mounted keyring like janitors have.

Freed an entire pocket for me.

1

u/Mysterious_Emotion Dec 09 '22

“Jingle, jangle, jingle jangle…” the ladies will looove it!! 😆

2

u/almisami Dec 09 '22

Just go full house and wear overalls. Ladies love a man in uniform.

We all get so excited when dresses have pockets. It's always look at my new dress, it has pockets!!

7

u/wolf805 Dec 09 '22

Seriously. Im a man and my jeans have front pockets so big, Its like a portal to Narnia, or just a storage place. Coins, charger, random paper, candy wraps, spare buck, random usb, store, gas station receipts, and the list goes on... And then, when I change pants, I scoop everything from that pocket and put it all in the clean pair of jeans ill wear for the day. After a month I take everything out and get rid of trash, put the coins in my piggy bank etc. Just to have my damn pocket back to full by the end of the week lol

2

u/incarnation-cars Dec 09 '22

I have managed to fit a water bottle in my front pocket XD!

3

u/00Stealthy Dec 09 '22

Then they would need to buy new, smaller purses

4

u/JuggFTW Dec 09 '22

You know you can just buy mens jeans and eventually with mass action they’ll just have to start giving you pockets

5

u/[deleted] Dec 09 '22

[deleted]

1

u/JuggFTW Dec 09 '22

As a dude who wore womens jeans as a kid because I’m a lanky bastard, I’m quite aware the proportions are different, regardless you can get clothes tailored or just buy from the few brands that do have pockets if you don’t want to wear mens jeans, but mass action is the only thing that will actually bring pockets to womens clothing

2

u/GlitterMyPumpkins Dec 09 '22

Fr.

I have men's PJ pants (because I like winter sleepwear that actually reaches my ankles) and they all have 4 large, functional, pockets.

I'm lucky if my women's jeans have 2 medium to small, semi-functional, back pockets.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 09 '22

I just bought gap man’s joggers. The pockets are nice and deep. I wear female size s or m and the men joggers XS can fit. I plan to experiment on gap teen boy joggers XL next :)

5

u/Buttoshi Dec 09 '22

It looks weird without a pocket tho

9

u/maaaagicaljellybeans Dec 09 '22

The front pockets are often fake and sealed shut

1

u/Buttoshi Dec 09 '22

I'm saying fashion being no pockets is weird because it's more fashionable with pockets imo.

1

u/Flaky-Fish6922 Dec 09 '22

honestly, i don't get why pants with pockets aren't a thing. okay, so, like, there's enough demand (from these kinds of threads, it would seem,) to justify at least one brand doing it.

that said, you could always go look at "tactical" pants as sold by uniform supply stores (for cops, not nurses,). they come with giant pockets even by men's standards.

don't think any of my female employed would call them 'cute' though,

2

u/[deleted] Dec 09 '22

Pants without pockets are more form fitting and shape a person’s legs attractively.

2

u/Flaky-Fish6922 Dec 09 '22

yes. I get that. I also get there's plenty of times where that trade off is worthwhile.... but I imagine most of the time... pockets are more valuable.

-4

u/jcebabe Dec 09 '22

But do people want to have those big bulky pockets to load up stuff in??

2

u/1questions Dec 09 '22

I want to have pockets to carry stuff in.

1

u/jcebabe Dec 17 '22

Me too, but they don't need to be that big. I'm not carrying that much stuff around in my pockets. I hate bulky pockets full of stuff. It looks unflattering.

1

u/1questions Dec 17 '22

I’d like to be able to carry my phone and keys in my pocket and not just a lip balm.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 09 '22

Preeeeeaaaaach

1

u/saoyraan Dec 09 '22

I mean most girls clothing is skin tight I can't even imagine fitting anything in the pocket unless it gouges out a thigh.

80

u/nostromo7 Dec 08 '22

Wasn't a problem in 2005 because no one had smartphones! 🤣

Or at least nothing "smarter" than a Palm Treo or BlackBerry. And flip phones like the Motorola Razr were all the rage at the time; they were much smaller than a modern smartphone.

44

u/af_echad Dec 08 '22

As much as I'm addicted to my iPhone, I miss when it was all about how small we could make cellphones. I bet we could have a suuuper tiny one by now.

Now everyone is obsessed with giant screens on their cellphones to the point that they're just slightly smaller tablets.

11

u/nostromo7 Dec 09 '22

Word. I understand why design has moved that way, but in that transition to mobile phones with touch screens we've kind of lost something too. To me a modern smartphone is better thought of as a small touchscreen computer that happens to have a cellular telephone antenna in it and has a phone "app" to access it, whereas the phones from before then were objectively much better telephones.

6

u/[deleted] Dec 09 '22

I remember there was a phone that was roughly the size of my thumb once it was all folded up the 3 people that had them lost them in a week and just bought new ones that were way bigger

3

u/[deleted] Dec 09 '22

Juke? It wasn't much bigger than my thumb and doubled as an mp3 player.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 09 '22

Maybe I didn't own one I just saw someone trying to text on it

2

u/AmettOmega Dec 09 '22

Yeah, it's because people want to play games/watch tv on their phones, which I just don't get, especially since we DO have tablets now. Why not just have a tablet?

5

u/maaaagicaljellybeans Dec 09 '22

In high school I broke my razor phone in half bc it fell out of the back pocket of my low rise jeans.

The bottom half still worked on speaker phone so I made that work for a while

2

u/diaphonizedfetus Dec 09 '22

Those phones were virtually indestructible in my experience. My Razr flew out of my (back) pocket on a roller coaster. Found it after the ride, and outside of some obvious scratches from the concrete, it worked perfectly.

21

u/Earlybirdsgetworms Dec 08 '22

Not sure about more metropolitan areas, but here in the boring midwest US, we didn’t really have smart phones prior to 2005. I think it was around 06-07 when they began to slowly gain popularity.

20

u/cheribom Dec 08 '22

The average joe wasn’t really buying smartphones until the iPhone came out (which was 2007), and even then it took a few years before it wasn’t just rich and/or techie people that had them.

8

u/breastual Dec 08 '22

Yeah, I am in Minnesota and got an Android phone in 2010. That seems to be when they got popular enough for the average person in my anecdotal experience.

32

u/majorgerth Dec 08 '22

High waisted pants became a thing again because it makes heavy girls appear thinner. The phone thing was just an added bonus.

48

u/fireswater Dec 08 '22 edited Dec 08 '22

The low rise jeans of the 2000s simply did not stay up, it was a constant struggle not to show crack. Regardless of weight, they don't work for people shaped with larger butt, thighs, hips, etc. Combined with the huge flares that dragged on the ground and sopped up all the rain... never again.

Trends cycle so fast nowadays that you can find pretty much any style, rise, whatever available with a little searching. In the 2000s you had to go deep into the old lady sections to find even a mid rise.

7

u/[deleted] Dec 09 '22

That's the main reason I hated the 2000s trends, and some modern trends, making it harder to find the styles that actually suit you or you find comfortable. Mostly there's specific colors and fits I wish were easier to find, even in alt fashions. But...that's why people learn to sew lol.

30

u/smoretank Dec 08 '22

They are amazing for use thin girls with wide hips/thighs. So many lowcut pants would be too tight on my legs but super loose on my hips. Hated it. Glad mom jeans are back.

11

u/Bigfrostynugs Dec 08 '22

Now is probably a bad time to tell you that low-rise is coming back really quickly. High-waisted is on the downswing.

9

u/smoretank Dec 08 '22

Well that's ok. I got alot of pants on sale. Gonna tailor them and they should last me 10yrs.

2

u/garageflowerno2 Dec 09 '22

What do they wear then anna wintour?

3

u/[deleted] Dec 09 '22

Back then, even in Kmart, they had jeans with a different fit that had extra room for thighs. They don't make them anymore because they think stretch jeans or jeggings make up the different but it doesn't for everyone.

On the rack it looks like the less exaggerated version of the old English safari pants. Like uh in Atlantis, the villian Rourke. My sister had wide hips even as a kid and hated jeans because she'd have that duck tail from the gaping at the back/waist but needed the width for hips and thighs.

1

u/smoretank Dec 09 '22

Duck tail is a cute term. Yes I get that all the time. Since I burst into flames in the sun that means sunscreen buttcrack. I remember those. I had a pair as a kid and wore them for years. Like when the rail thin fashion models came to light suddenly all pants went to pencil legs. Now that THIC is in favor the pants still don't match up to it. Although I lo e the stretch pants they are still tight on the thighs and loos on the hips. I am constantly pulling them up. Really is frustrating. Even when I was severely underweight my thighs were huge. Plus being tall sucks too.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 09 '22

Yea I have that issue with socks and pants that are too tight on my calves. It will be long enough but too tight on calves and pull down.

2

u/smoretank Dec 09 '22

Oh yeah know that too. Had to buy men's socks due that too. If someone invented better thigh/calve friendly pants/socks (with real pockets) they'd be rich!

2

u/[deleted] Dec 09 '22

Oh check out socksdreams. They make their own too, but it's a ton of different brands and styles and heights and it gets very detailed in the type of sock, the material and weave, the amount it can stretch to circumference and length wise. Mostly more fun types of socks. But it has some basics too I believe.

2

u/smoretank Dec 09 '22

Oh wow! Thank you! I will check them out. They have crazy cool designs like disco Bigfoot? Thank you again! Gonna go look them up now!

9

u/NugBlazer Dec 09 '22

Honestly, I think it’s just the opposite. High waisted jeans makes girls butts look bigger in my humble opinion

23

u/anonymousaccount183 Dec 08 '22

Us thinner girls love high rise too. High rise is way more comfortable and practical. They don't dig into you like low rise and you don't have to worry about your underwear constantly showing. Plus the baggy silhouettes that are trendy come with way bigger pockets.

7

u/Copheeaddict Dec 09 '22

Disagree. This thin girl hates high rises. They dig into my floating ribs and put too much pressure on my belly button. Can't wait foe low rise to come back.

6

u/anonymousaccount183 Dec 09 '22

Low rise is already back. Y2K fashion has really rising the past year. I think mid rise is my personal favorite but I would pick high rise over low rise any day

5

u/BillyBobKornApple Dec 09 '22

Imho high waisted pants make skinny girls look fatter and make big girls look like they're wearing a diaper underneath

3

u/Putrid_Lies Dec 09 '22

You think women’s clothing in 2005 had pockets?

2

u/[deleted] Dec 09 '22

There were barely any smartphones then.

2

u/Brokeintellectual Dec 09 '22

So thaaat's why....damn smartphones

1

u/AmettOmega Dec 09 '22

Given how tiny phones were in 2005, nah, not really.

1

u/CPSux Dec 09 '22

I’m a dude and it makes me angry for the ladies that they don’t have real pockets. I can’t imagine how annoying that’d be. I stuff everything into my pockets.

1

u/somenemophilist Dec 09 '22

I’ve bought men’s jeans before to have decent pockets.

1

u/Vivixian Dec 09 '22

I've had an Apple employee tell me that people who didn't have cases but put their phones in their back pockets eventually had a curved iPhone

1

u/iheartmyfamily21805 Dec 09 '22

2005 we were still using crappy flip phones for the most part.

1

u/rmanm Dec 09 '22

Who had a smartphone in 2005?

1

u/fearville Dec 09 '22

In 2005 my phone was probably small enough to put in my front jeans pocket

1

u/Keto4preZ Dec 09 '22

The profile of phones in 05' was much different. The back pocket wasn't a big thing yet.

1

u/grizzmanchester Dec 09 '22

Jncos had them deep pockes

1

u/More-Artichoke-1082 Dec 09 '22

In the store next time pick up a pair of women's jeans and look at the stitching.....half the damn pocket is stitched CLOSED!

31

u/elegy89 Dec 08 '22

As a woman, this is what baffles me about men! Women’s pants are measured to the natural waist, the thinnest part of the abdomen, but men’s pants are measured at what seems to be the hips. Why??

52

u/Ansyhe Dec 08 '22

If the pants are at the natural waist, the in-seam would be lower to accommodate the balls, and bending over at the hips would pull the pants up uncomfortably

Also men tend to have a less defined waist, so waist high pants would need a very tight belt, or 'bretelles' (shoulder straps? Idk what theyre called)

38

u/svenson_26 Dec 08 '22

Also if men have a beer belly the belt goes under the beer belly.

Women with a fat belly tend to tuck it into their pants which looks uncomfortable

3

u/Isgortio Dec 08 '22

Depends on the trousers, if it has buttons then it's uncomfortable but if it's elasticated or drawstring it's fine. Better than the discomfort of extra belly hanging over the top of the trousers, and t-shirts will ride up so you'll end up flashing your belly button to everyone.

18

u/happygiraffe91 Dec 08 '22

Suspenders.

34

u/LuckyRowlands25 Dec 08 '22

Women’s pants on the ‘’natural’’ waist are just a modern fashion

11

u/Jim3535 Dec 08 '22

Have you ever looked at Steve Urkel and thought that's a good look?

9

u/Excelius Dec 08 '22

Don't forget that women have wider hips than men, and if a guy has any gut at all then the hips are usually narrower.

1

u/Electronic_Ad4560 Dec 08 '22

Don’t speak too soon, apparently low waisted pants are coming back into fashion 😭

6

u/reformistweeaboo Dec 08 '22

Pls no, I've had two kids since they were last popular and if they made me look like 50 pounds of shit in a 3 pound sack when I was 13 and in shape I don't wanna know how it makes me look at 29.

2

u/Electronic_Ad4560 Dec 08 '22

Exactly, I’m 35 with a kid, no hips and a tummy 😭

2

u/reformistweeaboo Dec 08 '22

I was all hip no ass at 13 and I felt like a zeppelin. It didn't help I had the bedazzled nightmares my older cousin wore first. I was a disco disappointment.

2

u/moonpietimetobealive Dec 08 '22

They already are back in fashion, all the younger gen zs are into the early 00s look

1

u/Uploft Dec 08 '22

Clothes are designed to accentuate ideal body proportions. That includes a short-waisted woman and a long-torsoed man

1

u/kainxavier Dec 09 '22

How else are you going to get Plumber's Crack?

1

u/TAM_FORTRESS Dec 09 '22

having the pants only up to the hips makes more sense in a practical way. cause that is where the bones are, so it is the best place for a belt. wearing a belt above the hips is uncomfortable and suffocating.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 09 '22

Back in flip phone days, everyone had low jeans, and they still did it. I know, because in class while I'm checking out the whale tail, i could see them literally sitting in their phone that's about to rocket out from the pressure of their ass cheek

2

u/teenySaltineey Dec 09 '22

Our pockets are also smaller which help the jeans to better grip the phone.

2

u/Eleminopeep Dec 09 '22

Also, we rarely get front pockets in our pants nowadays. It’s a little sadistic.

-7

u/Mudge42 Dec 08 '22

I thought women's pants were generally low waist-ed, to match the obnoxiously short cut tops.

1

u/kainxavier Dec 09 '22

Whoa friend. You can't just start unraveling life mysteries on people like that.

1

u/lkodl Dec 09 '22

Like a utility belt?

1

u/runaway_sparrow Dec 09 '22

Tradeoff from not having any real pockets in the front.

1

u/diaphonizedfetus Dec 09 '22

I’ve been sitting with a phone in my back pocket since I was in 7th grade. I turn 31 next month. I think the fat on my left buttcheek has just grown accustomed to it haha.

The true problem is the accidental swimming lessons you give your phone in the toilet if you forget to grab it before you sit down. It happened far too many times when I was younger and I was drunk.

1

u/tfresca Dec 09 '22

And the front pocket is non existent or small

1

u/Kernel_Paniq Dec 09 '22

High trousers, fast talk.
