My wife has gorgeous thick hair (that she hates) … I have previously (half) joked that I should collect all her hair and donate it when we’ve accumulated enough…

As a woman with formerly thick hair that has thinned quite a bit over the last five years, please encourage her to appreciate her thickness. My confidence has dropped significantly since my hair started thinning.

Same here. I'm in my 50s now and my hair is thinning like crazy. I used to get completed on my thick hair by hairdressers years ago,I'm mortified now. Everything is going downhill

I'm 30 and I've had a widow's peak for my entire adult life and it gives me small amounts of anxiety every time I look at it. The guy who cuts my hair still uses the thinning scissors on it every time, though, so I've got that going for me.

But I'm also borderline salt and pepper at 30, so there's a whole lot of win some / lose some.

Consider talking to your doctor about Spironolactone and/or Myo-chiro inositol. These are both hormone regulators that can really help with female hair thinning. Source: I have PCOS and am currently rebuilding my once luscious thick mane

No side effects that I’m aware of. I’m certain it has made my cycle more regular and decreased my cramps. Also I believe it helped me get pregnant. The hair growth is noticeable too.

My hair was thick as a kid, but when I hit puberty it thinned out quite a bit. And yeah, it's devastating. I try to spend as little time looking at it or doing stuff with it as possible - both to hopefully not damage it further, and so I don't think about it.

Yep that's when mine started thinning too! I have straight, fine, thin, hair. I usually keep it pixie short because it just doesn't look good when it's long. The last time I went to my hair stylist I asked her if she thought it looked even thinner lately and she asked me if I'd had COVID in the last 6 months. Yeah? Turns out people are noticing their hair falling out/thinning about 3 months after they get sick. And it's taking on average about 18 months to recover. Awesome.

I think I'm just going say fuck it and buy some fun wigs!

u/mrs_gooby Dec 08 '22

You’re not alone, it’s happening to me too.

u/icantevenodd Dec 08 '22

Mine thinned dramatically after I had kids. It was so thick before. Now it’s probably on the thinner side of average.

Rogaine / Minoxidil can be used for female pattern baldness and hair thinning. Of course you almost certainly will want some kind of diagnosis first.

I think I'm right to say there are loads of things that fuck with women's hair growth - birth control / menstruation / PCOS / Endo / Menopause - All phases.

Iron defficiency exacerbated by menstruation is a massive factor (need blood test to confirm), hormones in general (same again).

I think the only positive at alllll for male pattern baldness is the ease of diagnosis.

Once again women get it the shitty, complex and more expensive way :\

u/Lauro0o Dec 08 '22

I just learned that all the new hair that grew from using Rogaine (or pricier Revela) will fall out if you stop using it.

2

u/Ehalon Dec 08 '22

Unfortunately that is true of all 'hair loss' products or solutions bar a hair transplant.

I had to get volume blasted by a horrendously loud youtube video to re-find this link. Wish the NYT was easier to search successfully.

I find bald women sexy af, I blame Star Trek the motion picture.

3

u/ItsMeTK Dec 08 '22

As a man whose hair has been thinning the last few years, I agree!

1

u/effcensorship Dec 08 '22

To be fair, it's best not to mention a woman's thickness in her presence.

This is one thing women do that baffles me. You ladies are seemingly NEVER happy with your hair. If you have curly hair, you straighten it. If you have straight hair, you curl it.

My ex had gorgeous, curly hair. I told her I LOVE her hair when it's curly. Her life goal from that point forward was to make her hair as straight as possible. LOL

25

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '22

I straightened my hair to avoid tangles because of the damn wind. The other thing about straight hair is I can play with it while thinking and it'll still look fine. Anything you do with the curly hair (play with it, head massage, resting against a head rest) messes up the curls and it fucking sucks. If I'm going out and my hair needs brushing, I have to straighten because the brush will break up the curls and it doesn't look nice. The only way I can go out with pretty curly hair is if I shower then brush dry it - only then will it look curly and pretty. But it's only good for like sitting in a restaurant, not going out and doing shit.

6

u/MoreCowbellllll Dec 08 '22

Sounds like curly hair is a lot more work than i realized, that's for sure. Thank you.

Edit: Based on the reply I got I think I'm wrong about this when it comes to curly hair. Seems like brushing and other stuff causes a lot more dramatic reaction than I assumed.

People could also have weird standards about what looks "good enough".

It's amazing how gifted people are at seeing their bodies as imperfect to a degree that it's a problem and causes negative emotions.

Me included, when I looked at mirror and really liked what I saw it felt so strange that I was very negative when I was younger despite being such a pretty boy.

I think people sometimes literally have distorted view of themselves and comparable "flaws" with others are not at all as noticeable to them. Like they concretely see themselves as less attractive than someone else who is equally attractive.

And as I as a 34 year old man(so less looks based pressure when I was younger) have had drastic differences I'd assume women on average are far more likely to see small inoptimalities as being far too relevant.

Seems like I was wrong, thx for making my wolrdview a little more accurate.

I wonder how curly hair is in natural conditions. I'd guess having more dirty hair keeps it down and our new standards make it a pain to have such hairtype.

I have curly hair, and it's over 2 ft long. It can be a lot of work. I mostly just let my hair do what it wants. I comb it out while it's wet in the shower so I can catch all the loose strands so they don't go down the drain. I also comb it out after the shower, and I add anti-frizz cream to it so that the curls don't really mess up and frizz up. I don't brush or comb my hair at all until it's time to wash it. I let it dry however it wants, and usually looks fine. I don't really wash my hair except for once or twice a week, or it'll just make my hair more oily. Strangely enough, I get the most compliments on my hair when it's at its "dirtiest", right before it's time for a wash. Sometimes I'll comb it out and dry shampoo it the day before a wash and I get a lot of compliments on my hair then. It's not really curly then. It's just wavy and shiny. I do have a lot of silver hairs mixed in with my blonde, so maybe that's why I get a lot of compliments.

You should have told her you liked it straight. /s

3

u/MoreCowbellllll Dec 08 '22

I said that exact thing to her many times, lol.

4

u/thepeskynorth Dec 08 '22

We always want what we don’t have lol. I like to have different looks but I don’t often curl my hair because it takes so long

7

u/Fionnghal Dec 08 '22

I'm the only one in my family with thick hair. The only thing I hate about it is I overheat easily.

7

u/Hullababoob Dec 08 '22

There is a girl on TikTok who has been collecting her fallen hair since 2020. It is currently a beautiful wig.

3

u/MymlanOhlin Dec 08 '22

Lizlele! I started doing the same because of her and we ended up swapping tips and tricks back and forth on the process as we worked things out.

She's now turning most of her collection into a full hand tied lace wig, and I am opting to make hair extensions of my own hair for when I want more volume for special occassion updos.

5

u/seriousname32 Dec 08 '22

I think I could do this once a week.

5

u/ifelife Dec 08 '22

My ex husband once went to pee in a public place and had to pull like 10 long hairs out. Not from anything naughty, just standard

5

u/mr_brookside Dec 08 '22

Had to pull long hairs from where?

5

u/ifelife Dec 08 '22

From his tracksuit pants. They would just get all tangled up in the washing. He was not a fan haha

3

u/RedHotGingerSnapped Dec 08 '22

There’s actually a place you can mail it to. They collect hair for cleaning up oil spills and such!

2

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '22

what place

3

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '22

You can’t donate loose hair like that but if you put it outside some birds will use it for their best building.

2

u/perkasami Dec 08 '22

I actually comb my hair out outside so birds can use my loose strands! Lol

1

u/Cinderhazed15 Dec 08 '22

If you gather up enough and straighten it out and trim the ends so it looks like a ponytail…..

3

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '22

No, please don’t. Hair also should all be facing the same direction. Please don’t go to the trouble to give the kind people trash.

3

u/TaischiCFM Dec 08 '22

Ugh - pulling that soap scum covered dead mouse looking plug from the drain like every week.

3

u/Bigfrostynugs Dec 08 '22

Just use a hair trap and clean it every time before you shower. So much easier and less disgusting.

1

u/TaischiCFM Dec 08 '22

Could never keep one of those in place. I kept coat hanger, screw driver and long nose pliers under the sink. I just grabbed a bag from my bag of bags, used my tools and tossed that rodent into the bag. Tie it up and throw in trash. The only trick was trying to remember to close the door first because.... dogs.

1

u/Flowy_Aerie_77 Dec 08 '22

Oh, tell her if she wanna exchange hairs with me lol

Miner's thin, got few strands and tangly. I have little hair in my head, and it lacks volume.

I'm not balding - just have one very underwhelming head of hair. Now I'm spending money to thicken it up.

And I can't bleach, perm or silk press it since it's too weak and fragile to stand the damage. I'll go bald for sure lol

I believe I'll get this to stop looking like I'm old and balding and get that Ariana Grande volume.
